Decode Cipher

Welcome to Decode Cipher, an RP hosted by your's truly. In Decode Cipher, players will play "Ciphers", people rumored to have greater powers in the Network itself gained through mysterious and unknown means. With these powers, Ciphers have been known to work in a variety of ways; either to gain notoriety or fame, to cause destruction and chaos, or to fight against those who do. However, Ciphers are not considered to be legal within the network itself, and as such the City has implemented programs and security to help either remove these accounts from the network, or severely restrict their use. Because of this, many Ciphers go to great lengths to hide their identities, and keep their abilities as secretive as they can.

I hope that the majority of players work with characters around highschool or college age; living and working close in the city. This RP will be fairly open-ended, and while I will have a plot to direct, I will work with the players to see how they want their characters developed and what they want to see happen as well. This will lead to a more open, slice-of-life environment in the RP, where players can interact inside and out of the network, either learning of each other's identities within the network, seeking to get others brought to justice, or helping each other with their goals. While there will be action, the plot will operate as more of a mystery/thriller piece, as players uncover the mysteries Ciphers and nature behind the Network's return. In terms of media equivalence, consider this RP to be a cross between Megaman NT Warrior and Yugioh! VRAINS.

[spoiler=Rules]

All YCM Section and Forum rules will apply. The host(s)'s word is the final word regarding application accepting and the events in the RP. As many other RPs on the site, I will be running a Skype Group Chat along with the RP, and participation is mandatory. If you do not have me on Skype, or do not have any participants on Skype, please PM me or another participant your Skype Address and we can add you to the group chat. If you read these rules, please highlight one word in your application red.

[spoiler=What can you expect?]

Decode Cipher will be a mixed-genre RP, focusing primarily on the character interactions and the mysteries behind the plot. I plan to have the characters deeply rooted in the setting and the plot itself, and as such will be working close with all the accepted applications to craft a great story. Because of this, there will be a higher expectation on the skill of the Roleplayer. This should not be outside the range of most roleplayers on the site, but it is to say that this RP won't be the best place for beginners to jump in. The primary goal is to craft a great story, and I look forward to working with all of you.

The RP itself will follow more of a mystery format, with characters working to unpack the hidden motives and meanings behind the events of the RP itself. As such, there will be a higher focus on drama, interaction, and plot than combat (however there will still be a place for action in the roleplay itself). If this sounds like your cup of tea, then I look forward to seeing your application.

The setting of the RP will still be fairly anime-esque, but will not be of the shonen-variety.

[spoiler=The Setting]

Denko City is at the bleeding edge of technology. It seems every year there's always something new, something even more advanced to be tested and sold.

Almost twenty years ago, Redline Entertainment released a stunning new technology, one they call the ARC Network. The ARC Network was a highly advanced augmented, virtual reality; using a wrist-mounted computer, players could enter a fully immersive virtual reality wherever they chose, whenever they wanted. Redline worked closely with Denko City, creating a new reality overtop the one that already existed.

The ARC Network was a huge hit, and of course society needed time to adjust to this new technology. Use of ARC units were banned during school hours as well as certain, busier areas of the city to avoid accidents. The city worked with Redline to introduce restrictions to prevent players from logging in while they were in these areas, or forcing players to log out once they entered these areas. Over time, the Network became a common thing in society and culture; everyone had their own device, either made by Redline or a rival company, and the applications and use of the Network grew beyond the small game that Redline had developed as other developers were given permission to work. By now, The Network had grown from a simple game to a whole new reality over our own; a cyberspace many began to call home.

Of course, not all is well in paradise. A few years in, accidents began to crop up; people were found in a comatose state, unresponsive to any stimulus. Eventually the cause was found to be rooted in the ARC Network and its usage, but nobody could determine the reason for why it was happening; why now after so many years. What started as isolated incidents grew at an alarming rate, and in a state of emergency the network was shut down. Redline was left in ruin from the many lawsuits, and was forced to close their doors, seemingly for good.

Fifteen years later and the network is back online. According to a press conference, a few key developers from Redline got back into business and brought the program back, claiming to have fixed the problems that plagued the network before. At first there was much hesitancy over the game, and only so many people bought back in. Steadily, more and more people returned to the Network, and while the augmented reality's population is a mere shadow of its former self, it seems the ARC Network is back in full force.

Yet, with such a past behind it, the ARC Network became the hot topic for urban legends and horror stories; tales of ghosts, or even people that gain seemingly supernatural powers; immersing themselves in the augmented reality as if it was more than just that. Rather than deter users, these stories simply drew more people in; and whether they realize it or not, they would come to see how the network would change the city forever.

Background: Your character's personal history. Please place in spoilers. If you have any setting questions, please look over the database or ask me any questions you may have. I encourage you to have your character as rooted in the setting as you can. Your character is not required to be a Highschool student, and can be a child, a university student, a parent, a social worker, whatever it is you desire. If you have any desire to be involved in something much more important such as law enforcement or the Denko Network Authority, please let me know ahead of time. As well, please pay attention to the applications others are making; I encourage variety in the characters of this RP, but it would still be good to have some characters either know each other, or have the opportunity to meet each other in a common place.

Cipher Ability(ies): Please place in spoilers. If your character is a Cipher, describe the ability or abilities that they have. Be creative; imagine them as super powers within reason. The only powers that will not be allowed are time distortion, mind-reading, or anything that would be otherwise impossible even within a virtual reality. Try not to make them too powerful, and if you have any questions please ask me, and try not to go too overboard.

Misc.: Anything else you want the others to know about your character that doesn't fit into any other section.

[spoiler=Two Wrongs Make a Right]

FLPcLlm.jpg
"Take it from the last guy. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry."

Name: Reiko Nagatani

Network ID: Reiko_Nagatani

Age: 19

Gender: Female

[spoiler=Appearance]Gjvd1xz.jpg
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 136 pounds

Reiko is just a bit on the tall side for a young woman, her body being topped with a head of medium-length brown hair, coupled with a face holding bright amber eyes. Her body frame is slim, but a quick glance at her skin is all it takes to find muscle tone and a number of small scars across her body. Over the years, her skin has grown rough to the touch, especially on her back and her hands.

[spoiler=Avatar Appearance]Gjvd1xz.jpg
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 136 pounds

Reiko is not a creative girl, and modeled her avatar precisely after herself, with the same height and build. This includes her hair, eye color, fashion sense, and so many other little details. However, rather unlike the real Reiko, her avatar does not have the same minor scars that can be found on the real person's body. This is overall a tiny difference, but still one the keen observer may spot. Short of an unscarred body, the real Reiko also has rougher skin than her online counterpart, with her avatar having smooth - but not soft - skin.

[spoiler=Personality]Reiko is the sort of person who works like a freight train. She doesn't stop until she says so, no matter what it might take to get a job done. Even if she has to stay up for three days in a row, she'll force herself through the work then collapse on the floor when she gets home. Reiko's sheer tenacity is both a blessing and a curse thanks to her nature. She isn't a timid person by any means, and is prone to doing something reckless if she thinks it's the right thing to do. Most commonly, something reckless she may do is try to confront an entire group of people by herself if she notices them doing something illegal.

Reiko, above all else, believes in the law and the necessity of having it to keep people safe. As she sees it, people who step outside the boundaries of the laws that keep people safe deserve no guarantee of safety themselves, leading her to her rather direct approach with criminals. Her rather direct, distinctly violent approach. Reiko, for better or - more likely - worse, is a girl who listens to her heart and wears it on her sleeve. People unlawfully taking advantage of others brings out the worst of her, and leaves her wanting to beat the wrongdoers back in line. Which she'll do. It doesn't matter how many people she tries to fight alone, if Reiko wants to go in and fight, she's going in and fighting.

Although she's easily angered by that sort of thing, it wouldn't suffice to call Reiko an angry person overall. In fact, she's actually rather pleasant most of the time, and surprisingly polite for someone so blunt. It isn't hard to bring her back down to earth if she's spiraling into her trademark rage, or to lift her spirits if she's feeling down. Whatever she's feeling at the time, she's going to express it, being a particularly emotional person, and rather prone to mood swings at even a small stimulus. This can work against her just as easily as it can for her, since while it's easy to pull her out of a bad mood, it's just as easy for her to fall back into it.

Perhaps the best way to cheer Reiko up if she's feeling down, or to calm her down from her newest bout of rage, is with food. While not a glutton by any means, a quick bite to eat and some positive conversation can pull Reiko into a good mood most of the time. Alternatively, one could take her to a zoo; Reiko loves animals, be they big or small. She's the type of girl who if it's raining and she finds a stray animal, she'll give up her umbrella and give it to them instead, assuming she doesn't just up and decide to briefly adopt the creature to make sure it's in good health before sending it on its way.

[spoiler=Biography]Although Reiko's been finding herself resorting to violence more and more lately, it was by no means a defining part of her life. In fact, one wouldn't think it seeing her today, but Reiko grew up with an especially peaceful life, although her birth wasn't exactly planned. The bastard child of an unknown lowlife and a mother who refused to abort a child, it wasn't long after Reiko's birth that it became clear her mother was in no position to raise a child. She'd barely made ends meet before Reiko was born, and a baby coming into the picture tipped the young Ms. Nagatani over the edge both financially and emotionally. After her meltdown about a month after Reiko's birth, the two moved in with Reiko's grandfather, a retired man in his twilight years living the life off a healthy pension. Her mother disappeared about a week later, presumably afraid she was taking advantage of the old man.

As such, Reiko was raised from infancy by her grandfather. Hideki Nagatani wanted to give his granddaughter an upbringing fit for what would someday become a proper lady. The only issue was that Reiko was very clearly someone who took after the old man, who was anything but proper when he was young. Even from a young age, Reiko was blunt, did whatever she wanted, and had no sense of an internal monologue. While Reiko's tendencies were brought down to earth a bit by her upbringing, they were never truly taken from her. Growing up, she learned the importance of good manners, respect, and above all else, was urged to never abandon rules or laws for personal gain.

Fast-forward to her high school years. Reiko's mother had since returned, and was helping an ancient Hideki raise Reiko. Unfortunately, due to his age, closing in on a full hundred years old, Hideki was getting sick. Reiko's mother had fully accepted that his time to go was coming. Reiko didn't. She was willing to do anything to stretch the old man's lifespan even by another year or two, and fell into the wrong crowd as a result. Delinquents, who perfectly embodied everything Hideki raised Reiko not to be, became her crowd, and she started getting caught up in their activities. It was violent, it was unpleasant, but what mattered to Reiko was it gave her money she could maybe use to stretch Hideki's lifespan. Ironically, Reiko's violent means of getting money to try and save the old man would be his downfall.

Reiko had been sent to the nearest pharmacy to get some medicine for Hideki, with the money and prescription needed. Along the way, Reiko was mugged by no less than six people, from a rival gang Reiko and her fellow delinquents had started some trouble with. One of them took the money and prescription, while the other five decided they'd have to beat the lesson into Reiko to not mess with them in the future. Reiko blacked out, though not to any sort of wound. When Reiko came to, her hands were bloodied, every inch of her was in pain, and five delinquents were on the ground around her. However, the one with the prescription was nowhere to be seen. Hideki died a few days later, shortly after Reiko turned eighteen.

It wasn't really something she was ready to handle emotionally. Although he likely wasn't going to last the month either way, Reiko blamed herself for letting the old man die, all because she chose to become a worthless little thug like he'd told her not to. Reiko and her mother both coped in their own ways. Her mother started planning for the future, paying little mind to the present to keep her mind off it for a while. Reiko, meanwhile, fell into a berserk rage. She'd disappear into neighborhoods with high crime rates for days at a time, before coming home bloodied and beaten, only to repeat the process the following morning. It took nearly two months for Reiko to finally get everything out of her system, but when she finally calmed down, her mother had her plans figured out.

Reiko and her mother were never a pair that saw eye to eye, but Ms. Nagatani's plan was one both of them could agree on. Hideki's house, which was quite valuable, was sold to a family that could use the space better than they could, and both the profits from the house and the inheritance from Hideki's passing were split between the two, before they went their separate ways one last time. Reiko settled into a cheap place in a not-so-great neighborhood, before working on how to clean up her act. Naturally, the first thing she did was cut her ties with the old gang, but not before urging them to straighten up as well. She wasn't really sure what to do after that. She wanted to have an honest job, but nothing felt right to her for a while.

Then she met a dog. A stray dog, starved and covered with fleas. Reiko had considered bringing it to an animal shelter, but instead wound up cleaning and feeding it herself, before sending the dog on its merry way. The next morning, the same dog was in her front yard. She fed the dog again, and made sure it was healthy before sending it off. This repeated for a few more days before Reiko learned that she actually enjoyed taking care of animals. The zoo wasn't hiring at the time, and Reiko didn't want to spend years studying to become a vet, so she turned her attention elsewhere. An animal shelter just outside her neighborhood had an opening. Reiko was apparently the only person who applied for the job, and next thing she knew, she was working there for a living. Between the job and her half of the inheritance, Reiko should be set for a pretty long time thanks to her low expenses.

And what does all this have to do with the ARC Network? Well, nothing really. Reiko's boss gave her an ARC Unit about a week ago, since he'd planned to get one for his daughter, but she'd already bought her own, leaving him with a spare Unit and nobody really to give it to. Employee of the Month Reiko just seemed like the best option to him at the time, since he had no interest in the ARC Network himself.

[spoiler=Cipher Ability]None

[spoiler=Misc]Apparently, Reiko is actually really good at managing her money.

Reiko's favorite animal is the lion. She's owned the same stuffed lion cub for almost her entire life; it's on a shelf in her bedroom.

In addition to her work at her nearest animal shelter, Reiko generally puts in volunteer hours at the local zoo if she has a few days off.

The dog that inspired Reiko to work at an animal shelter technically doesn't have an owner to this day, since Reiko's landlord had a strict no pets rule. However, he mostly hangs around near her house, and she takes care of it without officially owning him. Reiko's named the dog Wander.

[spoiler=Cup'a T.]
Name:  Michelle J. Whitman
Network ID:  Cup'a T.
Age:  17
Gender:  Female
[spoiler=Appearance]

[spoiler=Avatar]

[spoiler=Personality]
Ditzy.  Silly.  And a bit of a smartass.  To say T. lacks awareness is an understatement.  As intelligent as she is, she causes her allies lots of problems with her very frequent screw ups.  While she means well and often does everything in her power to support her team, she finds that her efforts are often for naught.  Good intentions or not, this girl is literally the definition of "a threat to themselves and others".  Not minding her rather droopy demeanor, T. is very cheery.  She wears a smile more often than not, and it takes quite a lot to break that tough shell of hers.   She loves herself.  Not so much in a narcissistic matter, but rather, she cares enough about herself that a few well placed insults will glance off of her with a nod and a laugh as she notes how true is might be.  She doesn't really have an angry side, and she's not one for revenge or things like that.  She does believe in karma though, and she tends to accidentally bring it about in her own goofy way.

Also.  She's a lil sheet.

[spoiler=Background]
Now this is a story all about how her life got flipped, turned upside down.  I'd like to take a minute, just sit right there.  I'll tell you why a British girl came Denko with no cares.

Innnnn the West of the world, born and raised, in Brighton is where Michelle spent most of her days.  Chillin' out, maxin', slackin' in off in school, all because she knew she was the smartest person in the room.  When her mom's career changed, Michelle though it was no good.  Taking Michelle out of the comfort of her neighborhood.  Michelle inevitably surrendered, giving into despair.  Until she learned she was moving to a place almost as famous as Bel-Air.  With whistles and bells, they were finally here.  A fresh new start, a brand new career!  If anything, Michelle could say Denko was pretty.  She was happy to call home to this new city.  They.  Moved.  Into the Skyline within a couple days, and the best part was that mom had already started getting paid!  Michelle became a stay home slacker, she was finally there!  A girl in Denko city, with absolutely no cares.

Momma Whitman is a congresswoman and makes a couple hundred grand a year, so she's not gonna force Michelle to go to school.  Instead, she bought Michelle an ARC unit to keep her occupied and "keep her mind busy".  That's the only reason she even has one.

[spoiler=Cipher]
Ooh!  Aah! - Two automatically generated Beretta M9 pistols.  Semi-automatic.  Can be affected by Cup'a's magic slot machine.

Randomly Generated Awesomeness - Cup'a wears a plastic, skin-tight suit made mostly of rubber.  Built into it its chest is a mechanical slot machine.  Whenever Cup'a wants, she can pull the lever.  However, whatever she gets is whatever she gets, and lasts a short amount of time before she can pull the lever again.

Everything is Awesome - One of numerous randomly generated effects are applied to Cup'a whenever she pulls the lever.  Cup'a cannot control what effects occur, nor how frequently.  She cannot cancel effects, and she cannot roll the same effect more than twice in a row.  Cup'a will receive bonuses or penalties depending on the effect selected by her Randomly Generated Awesomeness.

  • I'm Rubber, You're Glue! - Cup'a's plastic suit greatly expands, and increases in density.  Projectiles fired at the expanded suit are reflected back at the attacker, and while the suit is expanded, Cup'a is only vulnerable to melee attacks.
  • Die Sooner! - Cup'a's weapons are magically stripped from her body, and replaced with an enormous ten foot spiked club.  She becomes devastatingly fast, and enters a berserk state when she nears an enemy.  Her attacks hit harder and faster, but she becomes a lot easier to kill from range.
  • Get Away from Me.  You're Rude. - Cup'a becomes entwined with the magic of teleportation.  Her sidearms now fire portals of entry and exit, which can be placed along any flat surface in which she is aiming.
  • Cuter than a Bunny - Cup'a's pistols are replaced with two bunnies.  When squeezed (gently) the bunnies will fire forth a rainbow ray of hope, and cause her allies who are struck to regenerate their wounds.  If fired at an enemy, the enemy will be charmed (temporarily forced to fight for Cup'a) for an extended period of time.
  • T. Time - Cup'a's pistols are replaced with massive .50 caliber sniper rifles.  She can aim down both scopes at the same time, but will suffer reduced accuracy penalties.  Each rifle only contains one bullet in the chamber, but if aiming down one scope at a time, each bullet is guaranteed to either critically strike or kill the target.  While aiming down a single scope, Cup'a gains double accuracy.  While aiming down two scopes at once, Cup'a loses half of her accuracy, in exchange for a double shot that will explode on impact.
  • Show Me the Money! - Cup'a generates absurd amounts of cash.  For every 50 currency she picks up, her pistols will deal 25% more damage.  Caps at 100% bonus damage.
  • Shhhhhhh.  It'll All Be Over Soon. - Cup'a's guns are magically stripped from her body, and instead replaced with poisoned daggers.  Cup'a is also rendered invisible, and her footseps are silenced.  Cup'a receives no bonus damage sources, but her first attack while cloaked is guaranteed to critically strike, as well as poison the enemy.  Her attack must be melee.  She cannot throw her daggers.
  • Something Fishy - Cup'a's weapons are replaced by a freshly caught giant bass.  Because the bass is freshly caught, it smells awful and is really slippery.  Cup'a has 70% reduced accuracy while wielding it.  If she hits a target, they are instantly rendered unconscious.  "Something Fishy" cannot kill an enemy.

Age: 18
Gender: Male

[spoiler=Appearance]

Height: 5' 5"
Attire: Average
Hair: A little greasy

[spoiler=Avatar Appearance]
cleric_concept_by_jasontn-d94ouov.jpg

[spoiler=Personality]
Aaron is a shy nerd. There's really not much else to it. Outside of his close-knit circle of friends, he exhibits anxieties around other people. It's not that he dislikes people or hates being around them; he has a genuine fear of looking weird or people hating him. Online and in the ARC Network he stands to be braver with people, but even there tends to avoid others. Despite this, Aaron genuinely cares for other people and his friends, and even while he has a hard time expressing this all the time, he still makes an effort to be helpful to others if the opportunity arises. Aaron also has an intense fear of conflict and do whatever it takes to avoid it, be it running away or dodging the issue however he can.

[spoiler=Background]
Aaron was born into a middle-class family, and current attends one of Denko's prestigous high schools in his last year. Aaron has always kept his head low, drifting through life however he can. Over the years he grew to be a very clever kid, finding ways to avoid bullies and conflict however he can. Through elementary, middle, and now high school Aaron has been very successful at this, and in addition is set to graduate as one of the top students in his class. Of course, as to be expected, his social life in lacking significantly thanks to his anxieties. Aaron, as a result, spends his free time with games and shows, and otherwise on the computer.

The ARC Network made a big difference for Aaron's life; allowing him an avenue to be someone else. Since his first login, he became a frequent user. With his older brother's help, Aaron designed an avatar to his liking and was quick to join a group on the Network that frequented a roleplaying game. Both Aaron and his brother discovered themselves to be Ciphers when they first logged in, and while Aaron's brother was quick to embrace his gifts as a Cipher and live out a dream of being somewhat of a superhero, Aaron chooses to keep his powers to himself as much as he can. Even in the network, Aaron finds himself trying to lay low, and shackled by his own fears.

[spoiler=Cypher Ability]
Geometry - Aaron's ability as a Cipher is creating "physical" 3D Geometry anywhere in the network close to himself, and gives him the ability to manipulate them to his desires. Aaron can control all properties of the object he creates, but there's a limit to the size and complexity. Anything that Aaron creates is dependent on his own ability to focus on the shape, make, and style of the object. As such, the bigger and more complex the object, the harder it is for Aaron to create and control it.

"Never any love for Ciphers. Not even the ones who are helping. Eh, oh well. A hero doesn't do heroics for praise."

Name: Lance "Lan" Sisco
Age: 23
Gender: Male

[spoiler=Appearance:]
09e1ac909312d18b773905bab0bfb4e5-d2zmjft
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 158 lbs

Lan's general appearance is depicted above, however the glasses and headset are never on him at all times. Underneath the glasses are two ocean blue eyes.

x393wz.jpg
[spoiler=Personality:]
They say all those who end up spending their time behind their computers are shut in and don't really get out to make friends whatsoever or socialize like everyone else. That isn't the same for Lan. He does his best to socialize and talk offline with those around him, as he is sort of forced to because of his current internship at Prospect Preparatory, but he never comes across as socially awkward...at least not at the level of some 40 year olds who would tend to live in their parent's basement. Nevertheless, he does enjoy talking more with individuals in an online environment, especially with the advancements in computers and technology nowadays. He finds this to be the easiest way to meet new people and talk to them. Aside from this, Lan is a friendly sort of person and user, along with easily approachable.

In his spare time, when it isn't his internship or spending time in ARC, Lan loves to tinker and write new program script to try and help the world. Doing this also keeps him on his toes and keeps his skills in the programming field up and going while he's interning at the private school, as well as helps him experiment on new ideas for different program styles and uses.

In the ARC Network, he seems pretty much the same, until Ciphers are on the scene and making a mess of things. At this point, when things like this happen, Lan dons a much more heroic style of persona as he acts like a hero of justice to combat the Ciphers that are using their abilities and powers for evil. In these moments, Lan becomes a bit more eccentric and what he thinks a hero is supposed to be like, based upon the different comics and shows he's watched. Furthermore, he becomes a bit more serious in a fight like this, making sure the situation is immediately dealt with so there aren't any casualties.

x393wz.jpg
[spoiler=Background:]

"Every program…starts with a simple coding. And through the cycles of time, that simple coding will expand and grow into the program you see before you."

Lance "Lan" Sisco was born and raised in the U.S. and was raised up with a deep love for computers and everything IT related. Not surprising, since his father did a lot of IT work and let Lan watch him work on desktops and laptops to get the young child invested in working IT or at least have a understanding and love for the IT field. Needless to say, Lan definitely got into wanting to work IT big time!

As Lan got older, he found out that his father did work as a White Hat hacker and while it did intrigue him, he did prefer the workings and development of computer programs. After all, computer programs in his eyes, were something that the world needed an abundance of. That's about the time he chose to go to school to become an IT worker, namely in the field of programming, while still having some hacking knowledge thanks to his father teaching him the basics. He worked his way all the way to college to get his degree in IT, but before his final semester, his father landed a pretty big job that required them to move to Denko City, a literal wonderland of opportunity. While Lan wasn't exactly thrilled at first to be leaving his friends behind, he soon warmed up to the fact of what his father's job was: hacking into the ARC Network as contracted by Redline Entertainment.

Once they settled in, Lan was able to finish his college journey through some online classes and even taking classes at the university in Denko City. All the while, however, excited to see his father doing his best to perform his job to the fullest. At the end, he found that there weren't any noticeable bugs or glitches of any kind in the network and was paid tremendously for it, as well as given an ARC unit, free of charge. Lan's father immediately gave this to his son as a graduation gift and let him do with it as he pleased. This would mark Lan's first initial log in to the ARC Network.

Once creating his Avatar and taking the user name "Bl00dYGudTim3", a running joke between him and his friends back home, Lan entered the ARC Network and discovered something interesting...he was a Cipher with abilities based around programming. Unfortunately, he also knew that Ciphers were pretty illegal on the network. For a good long bit of time, Lan kept his Cipher abilities hidden, that was until he was put in a situation where he needed to: a bunch of child based Avatars were in the way of a Cipher attack and on a quick instinct, Lan used his Avatar's Cipher ability to call forth a firewall. Luckily, no one was hurt and no one saw him do this. This, however, brought a dilemma in Lan's life now: should he keep hiding his Cipher side or use these powers to help others. It was soon decided that he would use them for good to protect others in the ARC Network, however, he just needed a new appearance for this. It was this day that Lan created and programmed a secondary loadout preference for his Bl00dYGudTim3 account, CrimsonRiot.

Current time, Lan finds himself interning over at the Prospect Preparatory private school, under their computer instructor. But at the same time, he's always ready to get home and get into the ARC...maybe even save some people.

Modeled after the elves, Lan designed his ARC Avatar to be both unique and culturally correct in regards to both the elvish culture (as brought to you via plenty of pop culture) and the Japanese culture, creating a blend of two separate cultures in one Avatar.

The secondary Avatar loadout that Lan prepared for his ARC Avatar to assist him in keeping his Avatar's appearance and ID private when he uses his Cipher abilities. The design of this loadout Lan prepared is based upon the Japanese Tokusatsu heroes, most notably via the helmet, Super Sentai.

[spoiler=Cipher:]
Programmer
Bl00dYGudTim3 or rather CrimsonRiot's Cipher in which he is able to access his abilities and powers in the form of different types of computer programs and software.

  • Fragmentation - An ability that temporarily disables an opponent, shattering their in-game VR Code and causes them to begin fragmenting into pieces for a short duration.
  • Record - An ability that allows the user to mentally record any attack that is displayed and store it in their code. However, there is a reload system within this ability in the form that the user can only record one and store single attack at a time. The user can re-record the same attack, but only after a time period of two minutes have passed.
  • Playback - An ability that works in tandem with "Record" as it allows the user to use a recorded move that is stored in their code. Like "Record", this ability also has a reload system, in it can only allow the user to use the one move it recorded and it's used up that one time, unless the user has re-recorded the attack after two minutes.
  • Overclock - An ability that allows the user to move faster than an opponent.
  • Firewall - An ability which allows the user to summon up a literal wall of fire that can act as a shield or protection from any type of assault.
  • Alt Delete - An ability which allows the user to create a weapon, in this instance a virtual sword's hilt and bringing to life a laser blade in the shape of a katana's blade. The laser blade is quite durable and at the user's wishes, can use the hilt and fire the laser blade out as a projectile attack. The blade that was shot off won't be able to return to the user, however, the user can generate another blade within the time period of a minute.

Miscellaneous Information
x393wz.jpg
Lan's Theme | Log On Theme | Transformation Theme | Battle Theme

  • Lan’s naming scheme means the following: Lance - From the Germanic name Lanzo, originally a short form of names that began with the element land meaning "land". Lan – This name is taken from the computer term also called “LAN” which means Local Area Network. Sisco – This name is a corruption of the name “Cisco”, which is the name of a real life company known is “Cisco Systems”.
  • His real name is Lance, but he prefers to be called "Lan" as it's a lot easier to say than Lance in his opinion.
  • The ARC Network ID, "Bl00dYGudTim3" was a suggestion given to me by Hi I'm Dad and it was too good that I immediately had to run with it.
  • "CrimsonRiot", Lan's secondary persona on the ARC Network, was an unintentional reference to a hero known by the same name: Crimson Riot from My Hero Academia.
  • The Cipher ability and techniques that Lan's ARC Avatar has at his disposal are under the motif of programs or computer software in general: fragmentation, overclocking, firewalls, etc.
  • Certain aspects of the Cipher ability/techniques and even the secondary loadout that Lan has for his Avatar are based upon the Japanese Tokusatsu in the form of Super Sentai and Kamen Rider: Super Sentai - The overall outfit of the CrimsonRiot appearance, Kamen Rider - The Overclock ability, which is almost similar to the "Clock Up" ability that originated from the Kamen Rider Kabuto series.
  • The personality that Lan dons while as CrimsonRiot can be akin to that of another eccentric anime hero: the Great Saiyaman from Dragon Ball Z.
  • The weapon that Lan uses while as CrimsonRiot, Alt Delete, is a reference to the blade used by Omegamon in Digimon, in which said blade has text that would translate to "All Delete". However, for this, I referred it to meaning "Ctrl+Alt+Delete".

EDIT: Here we go~!

[spoiler= Alex Ascia]

Name: Alexander Ascia
Network ID: Alexis_Slugfest
Age: 52
Gender: Male

[spoiler=Appearance]sample_4a377c3c5e92bce5a85eb04aeb85c882a

[spoiler=Avatar Appearance]6049470d820854dbc86f76f5ea5da60706041392

[spoiler=Personality]
Alexander has always been a very driven person. If something (or someone) gets between him and his goals, he won't doubt to eliminate said nuisance. Following this principle, he's also capable of manipulating even those closest to him in order to gain the upper hand. That being said, he's also very respectful once you earn that respect. He acknowledges people above him as such, not being afraid to admit his weaknesses, not letting his pride get in the way. After all, if there wasn't anybody above him, there would be no more challenges to take part in. He even respects Redline and the ARC Network (despite their story) when respect is due, such as when security is too tight even for his leeches to get through. He has a hidden tender, fatherly side that usually shows up when his guard is down.

When in character as Alexis, he dons a happy-go-lucky persona, giggling and acting like a young, dumb teenager. (S)He tends to cling on to people and be generally annoying, although that is usually a cover-up in order to stick a leech into them without being noticed. (S)He tends to accidentally use mannerisms or make references to the good ol' days that only people of Alexander's age would understand.

[spoiler=Background]

Born and raised in Denko, Alexander had always been around computers. His father, a wealthy programmer, had taught him how to use a computer from a very young age, yet didn't expect Alexander's interest for them to peak as much as it did and, pleased, he often gave the young man advanced classes at home. As it was to be expected, Alexander studied computer science in college, where he got into a hobby that'd shape his life: hacking. He had a knack for it, and by the time he was 23 and graduated, he was already one of the best.

At that moment, multiple opportunities were presented to Alexander. With a computer science degree in Denko City, one could do about anything. Alexander, however, took a road less travelled by recent graduates: He started his own company, specializing in VR technology. His father had recently died of a stress-related heart attack, and he had inherited a substantial amount of money. He was not naive, and didn't invest in himself. No, he invested in his rivals. Specifically, he bought stocks for companies that would benefit with the absense of competition, and then eliminated the competition by hacking them; redirecting their money into untraceable bank accounts, deleting their files, sabotaging their tech, anything to control the stock market in his favour.

Slowly but surely, Alexander became a very wealthy man in Denko City, his company's name embedded into a good chunk of the VR-related products in the city, and worldwide. He had found a wife and had a beautiful daughter, named Alexis. But then, Redline Entertainment released the ARC Network. It was, as Alexander feared, a tremendous hit. To make matters worse, their security was top-notch. The now-thirty-two-year-old man knew every trick in the book, but no dirty tricks could get past Redline. They swiftly cornered the market, bringing Alexander to the brink of bankrupcy as he refused to change his company to manufacture ARC units. Even Alexis, Alexander's daughter, had become a fan of this new technology.

On the same year his company closed, incidents in the ARC Network started causing users to fall into a deep coma, from which they would never wake up. This took several lives, including the life of Alexander's daughter, who was an avid user. The poor man fell into a deep depression, divorcing his wife and losing almost everything in the process. An empty husk of a man, he had swore revenge on a company that no longer existed, on people that no longer were public figures, a revenge he couldn't concrete.

For the following fifteen years, Alexander worked an office job, making an above-average salary thanks to his loaded CV, which was more than enough to pay for rent and food. He didn't want anything else. Friendships and relationships evaded him, as he still longed for his family back and his revenge fullfilled. This stupor was abruptly interrupted when news of the ARC Network returning got to his ear. From under his bed, in a cardboard box, Alexander pulled out the last memory he managed to keep from his daughter: her ARC unit. Figuring his face was still well-known in the industry, even after all those years, he instead opted to use the young girl's old avatar, as well as her username.

It was finally time. Time to uncover the truth, and time for revenge. Alexander...no, Alexis' vengeance had just started.

[spoiler=Cipher Abilities]
Cyber Leeches: Alexis can grow viruses known as Leeches on her body. They can grow up to the size of a big cat, and slither like snakes on the floor. They can steal data from other users (or any sort of technology) by biting them, and feed said data to Alexis, temporarily increasing her strength, speed and durability. They can also discharge lightning through their sharp teeth. Alexis can control up to 4 full sized Leeches, or multiple smaller sized ones, which are harder to spot but take more time to steal data.

Leech Bite: Alexis grows a Leech inside of her, with only its teeth popping out of her hand. This way, she can electrocute people at an arm's length without sicking a full Leech at them.

Misc.: Possibly as a coping mechanism, Alexander fully identifies as Alexis when using the ARC Network. He has even started to listen to her favorite music, which is an odd mixture of computer noises and girly voices known as pop, that he doesn't fully understand.
Alexander/Alexis' last name, Ascia, means axe in latin. Axes hack wood, and Alexander hacks computers.

I'll make a new post cuz I don't wanna risk messing up the code for the first app~

[spoiler=Edmund Adequio]

Name: Edmund Adequio
Network ID: GoldFlurry
Age: 18
Gender: Male
[spoiler=Appearance]7643a9c6e8a5b244f30dee2eb3645909784c3c9c

[spoiler=Avatar]b9e8c364a089e17bdca05f0c0a0c05c52598b875

[spoiler=Personality] Edmund is a klutz. He has really good intentions, but always finds a way to screw up. His tight group of friends growing up have always accepted him as he is, so he doesn't think lowly of himself despite his constant mistakes. A nervous wreck, simple stuff such as messing up a word in a sentence keeps escalating into bigger and bigger issues. Deep down, however, is a lovely young man who brings any group together, a strong innate leadership that's usually overshadowed by his nerves and clumsiness. When he has his act together, however, he can be really eloquent, almost like a politician. Gold is a completely different story. His fans' support has a boosting effect to the young man, his confidence shooting up as he becomes somewhat of an arrogant prick. Its unknown if this is just a character for the camera or the way he really sees himself in ARC, but the result is still the same: Gold is a charming go-getter whose antics bring in more and more regular viewers after every live stream.

[spoiler=Background] Edmund has always been quite an average kid. He attends Prospect Preparatory and, while he has his tight-knit group of friends, hasn't always been the most popular. He's kind of a class clown, wether he likes it or not: his constant class naps, trips down the stairs or calling the teacher 'mom' always manage to get a hearty chuckle from his classmates, which he appreciates as humbly as he can. Low-key into gaming, he's always owned at least one gaming console and follows the most popular streamers. When ARC Network was introduced (or technically, re-introduced) Edmund saved his allowance for a couple of months, sold some old stuff, and managed to get his hands on one of them. He was hooked immediately, one of the main reasons being the fact that he was a Cipher. The rush of his first escape from the Denko Authority left a lasting impression on him, and it wasn't long before he started taunting them into a chase.  Edmund started a streaming channel on Twotch.tv and quickly grew in popularity, recording his misbehavings and constant run-ins with the Authority, as well as just plain-old gaming now and again. GoldStreams was an instant hit, with thousands checking in every day to watch him. Gold's future is uncertain and, while he's not a firm believer of the rumors of ghosts and monsters in the ARC Network, he welcomes any challenge that gives him a rush (or a new subscriber).

[spoiler=Cipher - Power Gauntlets]
Gold's Cipher takes the form of a pair of cybernetic arms that grow below his own. On each arm's inner forearm there's a numeric password panel. Inputing specific combinations make the arms transform into different modes:
0000 - Passive Mode: Both arms contract into X's body. The password panels are still present where the arms would come out, and Gold can press the same combination to call them back.
6995 - Flame Mode: Exhaust pipes protude from the elbows outwards, releasing powerful flames that can be used to boost X's movement or as a method of attack.
2664 - Pulse Mode: The entire hand is replaced by a Pulse Cannon, a weapon that fires widespread, short distance shockwaves.
5133 - Grapple Mode: The arm's mass increases exponentially, with the hand itself growing to the radius of a pizza tray. Strength and defenses are greatly increased, but speed becomes lackluster.
7550 - Burst Mode: The fingertips open up, revealing rapid-fire, yet weak, energy guns. In this state the hands become frailer, so its adviced to use at a distance.
9999 - Golden Blade: Both arms must input this code for it to work. A giant blade is crafted from both arms, causing them to detach from the body. Gold can wield this sword easily, despite its humongous size (~4 feet). After 5 minutes, this Mode ends, and the arms retract into the body for an hour cooldown.

Misc.: Edmund works part-time as a waiter at a local café near his school.
Edmund is very near-sighted in real life.

[spoiler=Haha you stupid cops! You can't catch me!]Name: Helena Purkiss

Network ID: TinyBeats1898

Age: 19

Gender: Female

[spoiler=Appearance]

BzZWFEP.jpg

Helena looks exactly like the picture above, but her body appears more frail, and her skin is blindingly pale.

[spoiler=Avatar]

yTnWGID.jpg

[spoiler=Personality]On the surface, Helena seems like a soft-spoken and timid person. In reality, however, she's very loud and boisterous. Most of the time, she's not afraid to say what's on her mind, no matter how brutal or pessimistic she sounds. As such, Helena never thinks about what she's about to say before she says it, and this usually results in her saying something embarrassing or rude. She's never intentionally rude; she considers herself as a realist in that way, claiming that she's "just keeping it real".

After her experiences with her sickness, Helena has adopted a slightly selfish personality. She doesn't consider the needs of others when her needs or wants conflict with theirs, unless if they are the needs of her family or friends. She's also a little pessimistic, and usually assumes the worst out of the world around her.

Once you cut through her hard exterior, Helena actually has a soft interior. She's a little more compassionate towards the people that she's close to, such as her family and friends. She will attempt to fulfill anything those few people ask, and she becomes extremely annoyed when she can't. She can be quite affectionate to said people, and will love them dearly.

Also underneath Helena's outer shell is a bundle of fear and anxiety. It's as if she has a voice in the back of her head telling her head that everything is out to get her. Outside of the ARC System, she has acute nyctophobia (fear of the dark), claustrophobia (the fear of enclosed or small spaces), thanatophobia (the fear of death), and above all else, gerascophobia: the fear of aging. As she only has less than ten years left to live, the though of becoming older and reaching the point of death terrifies her.

However, in the ARC Network as TinyBeats1898, Helena feels like nothing from the outside world can touch her, and that she can truly be free. In the ARC Network, she dawns a very childish and naive persona, acting like young child. She's quite mischievous as demonstrated by the way she uses her Cipher Abilities.

[spoiler=Background]Helena was born and raised in Denko City, and has never left it. She has never even left the Skyline, as her parents worked as Bakery Merchants in the Skyline.

Helena's childhood was an average one. She and her four older siblings went to school at none other than the Clearwater Academy, a dinky public school that was overshadowed by Prospect Preparatory. The Purkiss family didn't make as much money as the rest of the economic middle class, so they couldn't afford to send five children to private school. Each of the Purkiss children would be enrolled into Prospect Preparatory for their final four years of education.

Helena didn't make many friend growing up. Not because she was shy or timid, but because she didn't care. She'd rather have kept to her own world then to waste her time investing in others. The few friends she did make, however, she stuck with for many years.

When she was about sixteen years old, Helena fell ill with what the Purkiss family assumed was a common sickness. This included occasional nausea, headaches, and tiredness. After a month of being ill, and with her symptoms only getting worse, they visited a doctor. The doctor stated that Helena has a rare genetic disorder that weakened the body and the immune system. After a few weeks of treatment and appointments, the doctor told Helena that she will live to about age 25, and then her body would completely shut down, resulting in death.

As one might expect, she was terrified. She won't live to obtain a higher education, or to pursue a career like she wanted.

About a year later, for her seventeenth birthday, knowing how obsessed she was with video games, Helena's parents gifted her with an ARC Unit. Helena was surprised to see all of the available avatar customization options; and she decided to create her avatar the way she looked when she was eight years old, a simpler time when her illness hadn't taken a hold of her yet.

Helena (dubbing herself 'TinyBeats1898'), absolutely loved the ARC Network, and used it frequently as an escape from her life. Is was not long until she found out that she had what was known as a Cipher Ability, thus making her accounts existence illegal. Seeing the potential in her abilities, and all of the pranks that she can pull, she decided to utilize them to her advantage instead of making a new account.

In real life, Helena is currently in her final year of school at Prospect Preparatory, and works at her parents' bakery.

Cipher Ability(ies): [spoiler=IP Cloak]This ability has two forms:

  • The user becomes completely invisible to the naked eye. The user also becomes completely undetectable by any type of scanner or search engine.
  • The user is able to disguise themself as another object or user. To scanners and search engines, the user is displayed as the user or object they are disguising as.

[spoiler=Geo-Targeting]This ability has two forms:

  • The user is able to pinpoint the location and stats of any logged-on user. This Cipher ability works across all servers.
  • The user is able to scan their surroundings in a two mile radius. This gives the user data on everything that is scanned, including other users.

Misc.: The 1898 of Helena's username is referring to the computer error code 1898, which states: The group member was not found. [RPC_S_GROUP_MEMBER_NOT_FOUND (0x76A)]

Helena's favorite gaming genre is RPG, and on the ARC Network she'll usually be playing one of those, or hide-and-seek minigames.

[spoiler=Ai Akagi]

Name: Ai Akagi
Network ID: Nova_MK
Age: 18
Gender: Female

[spoiler=Appearance]
WHHsCvo.jpg

[spoiler=Avatar Appearance]
447_999_by_ksenolog-dap1k1w.png

[spoiler=Personality]
In school or around her family, Ai is polite, intellectual, speaks only when spoken to, and knows her place. She is familiar with all forms of standards and customs when it comes to being around persons of status, and is very careful when keeping in check with them. Around friends or people that she likes, when she has time, Ai is a lot more laid back and easy-going; showing off a humerous and fun-loving aspect of her personality that does not get to shine that often around her family. It's a lot harder to get on Ai's good side than one may think, however. Around most people Ai can be abrasive, stuck-up, and very condescending. Despite being the kind of person to take her family's status for granted, Ai has become very arrogant for a number of reasons.

In the Network, Ai goes by the handle of Nova_MK, and adopts an entirely different personality. In the network, Ai is bombastic, energetic, and rather rambunctious. As Nova, Ai puts on a show and knows how to play the crowd, her personality evens so far as being described as rather masculine. In fact, Nova_MK's design is intentionally gender-neutral, and while Ai isn't entirely comfortable going for an entire gender swap, she still refuses to confirm to any fans or spectators what her true gender is.

[spoiler=Background]
The Akagi Family is one of the most prolific names in Denko City. A wealthy family whose fortune is built upon the various desalination technologies that provide Denko City with fresh, clean drinking water, high expectations are placed on each child as they grow up under the watchful public eye of the press. Ai's mother married very young, and many years ago they had their first daughter; a poster child for the Akagi family. Beautiful, intelligent, charismatic, she was everything Ai's parents ever wanted in a child. Of course, this was many years ago. In that time, the ARC Network's first iteration was in circulation, and Ai's older sister was one of the many victims of the accident that brought an end to the network. Ai was born later, and has grown up alone ever since; her older sister, still in a coma, living in their penthouse suite under personal care of a private doctor.

Through her whole life, Ai has been living in the shadow of her sister; always compared, always placed under those expectations. She's also lived under the close, watchful eye of her parents, given very few freedoms between her studies at Prospect Preporatory, extra curricular studies, and any other events that her parents choose to put her into. Ai has lived her life working hard to meet her parents' expectations of the model daughter, but has never felt she's met them.

Because of the incident with the ARC Network and Ai's older sister many years ago, before Ai was born, Ai was never allowed to acquire her own Unit. Not only because of the incident, Ai's parents always argue that such a "mind-numbing device" would ultimately hurt her studies and hold her back even more. However, this did not stop Ai from getting her own device. As a small act of rebellion, Ai acquired her own unit and made a disguised account she named "Nova_MK", and spends most of her time as a professional fighter in one of the many public sporting games present in the Network. Ai became good at this aspect of the game; working her angle as a famous fighter well, and crafting her own personality of who she believed Nova_MK to be. Ai's Cipher Ability lead to her idea of being a fighter, but because of the strict rules of the game she was never allowed to use her abilities in the first place, of fear of being outed to the Network Authorities. Now, as a famous fighter, she works to keep them secret, in fear of the public eye and the Authorities once more.

But even with the freedom of sneaking off to be in the Network as this great fighter, she only finds herself shackled to her fears of the Authority as a Cipher, and only more alone than before.

[spoiler=Cipher Ability]
Cannon: Strong, forceful blasts of fire can be expelled from Nova_MK's fists and feet, causing damage and also being useful as transportation utility. These blasts also sport the ability to damage map geometry; appearing to be part of an experimental and ultimately scrapped code for environment destruction still hidden in the Network.

Misc.:
  • Ai has a tremendous sweet tooth.
  • She's also a huge sucker for trashy shoujo manga.
