Icerun

The Wailing Sea. It isn’t what most would call an inviting place to make their homes. Resting beneath the Crown of the World, it is the very furthest North one can go with any hope of surviving. Frigid winds tear down from the Crown of the World, whipping up some of the most fearsome storms the world has ever seen. It is not idly that “sailing in winter” is a metaphor for an impossible task in this part of the world. Early in the season, much of the ocean’s surface is covered by several foot thick layers of ice, and deep drifts of snow build upon that. This far to the North, much of the Winter is spent in nearly absolute darkness. Spring is slow to come it is vicious when it arrives. The Suns rise higher into the sky each day, the first winds blow up from the South, and ice and snow upon the isles will melt, filling rivers with freezing waters, Spring is only truly considered to have begun on the day of Icerun. The day when the Suns, South Winds, and Meltwaters finally conspire to crack the ice in the region’s many harbors and send it flowing out to sea.

In spite of, or perhaps because of, these hostile conditions the Wailing Sea is a place that flourishes with life. Trees grow to massive sizes on isles both large and small, and beneath their boughs run deer, rabbits, antelopes, foxes, wolves, and bears in the hundreds. The largest of the isles are even home to Trolls, Dire Wolves, Berskarns, and the mighty Grey Elk upon whom the giant predators feast. In the seas, fish of all sizes school together amidst forests of Kelp and great reefs of Coral kept alive by fissures in the sea bed from which plumes of scalding water pour forth to warm great stretches of the ocean. These reefs play host to many varieties of clam, crab, and scallop who, along with the fishes, are preyed upon by seals otters and sharks. The deeper stretches of the sea play host to the mighty Whales, beasts larger than a ship, who are preyed upon by the great monsters of the deep: Krakens, Serpents, Sea Wolves, and other, stranger things. Above sea and land, the sky is filled with a plethora of birds as well as perhaps the most well renowned of predators: Wyrms.

And yet, it is none of these who are the masters here. It is Mankind, that most curious of species, who has claimed this harsh and unforgiving place as their home. They fight off Trolls, challenge Krakens to hunt Whales, and drive off Wyrms from their homes just to make a living in this harsh place. And yes, a village or two may be destroyed by the creatures that they live alongside, but that most curious of all qualities, determination, has seen Humanity dig its heels into the frozen ground and refuse to go back a single inch.

Welcome to the frozen North! This, right here, is the first time I have tried to run an RP in a very long time on this site, and I am going to see if I can’t do this right.

As you might have guessed from the thread title, this is just an interest check for the time being. Mainly because I both want to gauge how many people would even want to join the RP if it came up, and so I can give updates on the progress I make in getting things ready and give prospective players a chance to give feedback.

On that subject, this RP is going to be your typical Sword and Sorcery style with a notable twist: instead of the more traditional Tolkien inspired fantasy, we are going to be drawing heavily from Old Norse legends and sagas for inspiration. What does this mean? Well, it means that you can expect the following in large amounts:

  1. Boasting about one’s deeds
  2. Feasting and drinking
  3. Dealing with an incredibly inhospitable land and the hazards associated with it
  4. Adventure on the high seas (Vikings did it long before Pirates)
  5. And, of course, lots and lots of gory combat. The Norse didn’t mess about with their descriptions of violence, and we are not going to either.

So, if all of the above sound like things you really want to get in on feel free to note your interest. Also, since I am going to be getting a working database together for this RP make sure to ask any questions you have in addition to letting me know you want in.
