Making "Crawlers" playable

I don't know what other support the "Crawler" archetype will get but right now the cards seem very underwhelming. The continuous trap helps trigger the Flip effects and the field spell helps a bit with swarming but there is no card that goes "hey, this is the new Shaddolls".

The worst part is the "floating" effect. All the "Crawler" have very poor stats, even if some have high defense, so why would any player use a card effect to destroys a face up monster that floats into 2 monsters instead of just attacking? But the ability to use both the Flip effect and the "floating" effects could be why it's so bad though but it could at least include by battle.

So I came up with a trap that would help remedy the floating effect and make them playable by giving them some "negation" and some plays.

When your opponent activates a Spell/Trap or Monster effect and you control 1 or more face-down monster(s); Change 1 face-down monster you control to face-up Attack position, and if you do, your opponent's activated effect becomes "Banish one face-up monster your opponent controls, then draw 1 card if that monster was a "Crawler" monster".

When your opponent activates a Spell/Trap or Monster effect and you control 1 or more face-down "Crawler" monster(s); Change 1 face-down monster you control to face-up Attack or Defense position, and if you do, your opponent's activated effect becomes "Destroy one face-up monster your opponent controls".

Trigger a "Crawler" Flip effect, force your opponent to destroy it, trigger floating effect.

You get to negate/neuter an opponent's effect, trigger a flip effect and end on two face-down "Crawlers". Overall I feel this is something "Crawlers" need to be anywhere near playable since as the archetype stands right now their flip effects are so underwhelming and there isn't and good combos for the deck going first.

Overall do you think this card is fair or does it need an OPT clause or such?

Personally, I've never used Crawlers, but I know the Archetype and how they work, and I agree they need support. I don't think this card will make it "playable", but it will definitely adds something to the Archetype. The card looks fair to me, it doesn't need restriction (maybe because if you have 3 of these you'll eventually run out of Crawlers to flip?).

I agree that Crawlers need some support, but I don't like this approach of making an overly strong card(s) as an attempt to compensate a needy archetype. If this was a +1 I would be fine with it, but it's a +2 at best since you trade 1 Crawler and this Trap for 2 Crawlers, 1 pseudo-negation on the opponent's effect and the Flip Effect, which can be a +0~1. Then add to it that it is searchable by World Legacy monsters.

On the other hand, despite this being the almost-mandatory archetype omni-negation Counter Trap, I like that the effect-replacement approach that complements the impractical requirement of Clawler's floating effect, while avoiding destroying the card so it won't trigger certain float effects; it really spices up what otherwise would IMO be a boring "If you control X archetype monster: Negate any effect".

So, I suggest to just drop the plusing to a +1 at best and it will be just great IMO. Maybe remove the flipping effect? That way the deck has a way of making use of face-up Crawlers; it would also work with the Link Crawlers without the need of having a face-down Crawler to activate it.

Fair point, but the point of the card is to help Crawlers use both effects since that is one of their main differentiating points to "Shaddolls" and I want them to feel different.

Here's what I changed:

  • It now banished the monster, this still trigger the "Crawler" monsters
  • If the banished monster was a "Crawler" your opponent can draw a card so it's only a +1 now.
  • The monster will always be placed in face up attack position so if you have another monster and your opponent banishes that on (perhaps "World Legacy - "World Armor"") so you still take the damage if they decide to just attack over it.

I also removed the clause saying that you had to control a face-down monster since you don't have to flip it face up there could be some weird rulings since your opponent doesn't know if you fulfilled the activation requirement since you could flip up a monster that wasn't a "crawler". Frankly, you can't have enough generic "Flip" support

Does this make it any better?

Hmm... banishing the monster is somewhat undesirable because the Excrawlers grab the monsters from the grave, but also now is more generic so you could play it along non-Crawler Flip monsters for a +0, which is cool. Then again, once a maindeck Crawler floats you get 2 Crawlers so sustaining the float of the Excrawlers shouldn't be a big issue. Yeah, it is better and more fair this way, IMO. Can't wait to tech this and World Armor in Flip decks so Armor can self-Summon itself and grab this card.

I wish there was a way to activate World Armor's SS effect on your first turn because other wise it's frankly slower than a trap since you have to wait 2 turns to activate it, and that's only if your monsters stay face down or you can flip them face down through other means. Still a good card, triggers on normal, the extra effect on normal is pretty good, at least it has a SS effect and the search effect will only get better as more cards are released.

Now we just need to petition Konami to make the is card lol.
