High School "DxD" Archetype v1

CAF

Recommended Posts

The idea of creating a Yu-Gi-Oh archetype around High School DxD has been something I've been tinkering with via TCG Editor for quite some time now. Originally I used Card Maker for some of the earlier card designs and images I used, but otherwise the core premise has remained the same.

Each member of the Archetype has at least 1 Main Deck Monster, 1 Equip Spell Card, and 1 Extra Deck Monster associated with them. The Main Deck Monsters primarily use effects in order to search, summon themselves or other monsters, and so on, with each monster able to Equip themselves with their associated Spell Card from the Deck or GY.

The Equip Spell Cards give the majority of effects to the DxD monsters, while also being able to shuffle themselves from the hand into the Deck in order to search out their associated DxD monster (therefore solving one of the major issues of running so many different specific Equip Spell Cards).

The Extra Deck Monsters provide additional effects while also being stronger than the Main Deck Monsters. Currently all the Extra Deck Monsters require 2 Level 4 DxD monsters.

Originally I wanted to include Quick Spell Cards for each DxD monster to send from the Deck to the GY via the Equip Spell, but things got too complicated, so I had to scale back a lot. Even now, I do wish the cards were less complicated, but hopefully the general principles of each card is clear. All the monsters cannot be Tributed or used as material, except for the summon of DxD monsters, for example. You can also only control 1 of each monster. I intend it to be worded so you cannot control both of the associated Main and Extra Deck Monsters, but I'm not positive on the ruling.

I've gone through several iterations when designing these cards, with this batch being the first completed versions. There are 10 Main Deck Monsters, 10 Equip Spell Cards, 1 Field Spell Card, 1 Continuous Trap Card, and 10 Extra Deck monsters. Some concepts such as being "treated as a Rank 4 monster", along with monster card types Ace Monsters I haven't finalised quite what I want to do with them, so they're left overs on some of the cards but have no practical use at the moment.

Ultimately I hope for some feedback here. The intention is to make them have competitive viability, but I do feel there may be too much of certain effect types like negation involved, or certain effects could use a redesign like Kiba's Equip Spell Card. Some of the monsters like Issei and Rias I'm pretty much happy with, while the others I'm less certain of, like Gasper and Rossweisse.

When an opponent's Spell Card is activated (Quick Effect): You can send 1 "DxD" card from your hand to the GY; negate the activation, and if you do, banish it. You can only use this effect of "Rossweisse, Valkyrie - DxD" once per turn. If this card is used for an Xyz Summon, you can treat it as a Rank 4 monster. Cannot be Tributed or used as material, except for the Summon of a “DxD” monster. You can only control 1 "Rossweisse - DxD" or “Rossweisse, Valkyrie - DxD”.

Oh God, another Chess Archetype! This is the third one in like, 3 days? I've never though there could be so many ways to translate Chess into Yugioh.

As for now, I'm sorry but I don't have enough time, but I'm definitely gonna review this tomorrow, even though I'm not familiar with the Anime.

Here I am. The Archetype is quite complicated, but I'll do my best, even if I could miss some points.

I'm gonna review monster - equip spell.

Hyoudou Issei - DxD (pawn)

When Summoned: search a monster (except itself). Basic searcher, also if you search you can't equip Gear. Maybe it's slow, but the fact that the equip spell is really, really good makes it more balanced.

Sacred Gear - Boosted Gear

Prevents from Creature Swap. Opt: place 1 Counter, or target and destroy. Just like Hyoudou, pretty slow, yet if you Summon and equip, without searching, you get a 3k body, which can increase next turn. I feel like this is a true Pawn, making its way in the chessboard, but maybe it's totally wrong. I like these cards, but if you search with the monster, you can't equip, if you search with the spell, you can't boost the ATK.

Gremory Rias - DxD (king)

Once, discard 1 Equip Spell, SS a DxD. I thought Equips were meant to search their monsters, but with this card you can SS a monster, then use its effect to search the Equip, then you can use the Equip's effects. Yeah, it does its job as a King.

Power of Destruction

Boosts ATK. Opt: pay 600 LP, banish a Set card, or target Hyoudou, it loses 600 ATK and negate cards that targets it. Ok, the backrow removal is really good, and the other effects is usable on only 2 monsters, so if you use the Summoning effect, you might want to Summon Hyoudou Issei.

Himejima Akeno - DxD (queen)

When Summoned: SS a DxD from the hand. Still, this "choose which effect to activate" bothers me. Why can't I Summon 2 DxD, then use their Equip Spells? The Equips also have their "choose" effect, so I'd remove this from all the monsters. I don't think it'll make the Archetype broken or anything. The Summoning is kinda specific, couldn't it revive from GY too?

Holy Lightning

Prevents from shuffling removal. Opt: pay 600 LP, shuffle a face-up S/T, if you control the pawn, discard a DxD/Equip, then shuffle 1 monster. The queen becomes an unstoppable removal, uh? Well, everything is opt, so you get to shuffle 1 monster or 1 face-up S/T. I'd change the cost from discarding to milling, since it requires having a specific monster on the field.

Argento Asia - DxD (bishop) An Italian name! Did you know Asia Argento is an actual Italian actress?

2000 DEF. When Summoned, search a S/T. Same as the pawn. And I'm more and more convinced that the monsters shouldn't have the "choose which effect to activate" restriction. Also, this card can only search 2 cards...?

Sacred Gear - Twilight Healing

Prevents from being attacked if you control other DxDs. Opt: gain 600 LP for each DxD, or place 1 counter which can prevents destruction by effect, or during your opponent's turn, place 1 counter on the pawn. Yeah, the "If a face-up DxD card(s) you control would be destroyed..." isn't in the right place in the text. It's a Continuous effect, it doesn't belong to the opt clauses.

Toujou Koneko - DxD (rook)

If you Summon a DxD, Normal Summon this card from your hand. Ok, so this isn't a "choose" monster, we're on the right track. But I don't get the Normal Summon, it doesn't add another Normal Summon like Double Summon does, so it should be a Special Summon. I know Rooks don't give the idea that they could be Special Summoned, but this time this should be able to do it.

Senjutsu

Prevents from being bounced. Opt: if the equipped battles, it gains 600 ATK and DEF and your opponent cannot activate cards, or if it attacked and you control the pawn, bounce a monster. Mh. The first effect should be introduced by "this turn", and the second effect doesn't make sense, because it's applied AFTER damage calculation, so you've smashed the equipped rook into a bigger monster just to bounce it. I see you've taken the Abyss Script - Fantasy Magic advice, but this time, it requires having the pawn.

Yuuto Kiba - DxD (knight) Ok, I admit that. The first time, I read "Kaiba".

When Summoned, mill a DxD and its Equip Spell. Ok, as for now, I don't get why you should mill cards. But I'm sure there will be a card that will explain me.

Sacred Gear - Sword Birth

It lets the equipped monster attack multiple times. Opt: place 1 counter which can negate effects that target Equip Spells, or pay 600 LP, then add to the hand an Equip from the GY, but it cannot be activated unless you control the pawn. A little recycling, and adds the Demon Sword mechanic. So wait, is this why you're milling Equips? But if you mill, you can't search this Equip Spell, so the whole strategy is rather slow and requires 2 turns.

Quarta Xenovia - DxD (knight)

If you control a DxD, SS this from the hand. There are 2 different Knights? Oh yeah, maybe if I had watched the Anime I would've known that. Btw, this is kinda how the Archetype should work. You get to Special Summon this, then you can search the Equip, and activate its effect.

Holy Sword - Durandal

Prevents from Position manipulation, piercing damage. Opt: quick effect, negate an effect activated during the Battle Phase, or if you have the pawn, the equipped monster attacks twice (but others can't attack). I always knew Knights should deal piercing damage :D Then, this card is perfect even with the Choose restriction, especially because it offers something that isn't protection and isn't an option.

Shidou Irina - DxD (ace)

When Summoned, add 1 DxD to the hand from the GY. Yep, if I played this Archetype I'd want to both recycle and search the Equip. Also, this card is a Tuner only in the Image.

Ace's Blessing

The equipped can attack directly (damage reduced by 700 if you don't have the pawn). Opt: if it does battle damage, draw 1 card, then place 1 on the top of the Deck, or reorder the top 3 cards. Honestly, I'd use this just because of the direct attack. Let the monster have a plus by removing the "place 1 card on the top of the Deck".

Vladi Gasper - DxD (bishop)

If you take effect damage and you control no monsters: SS this from the hand, then end the phase. Cool card, I like the "immediately end the phase" because your opponent will basically enter the Battle Phase without the proper cards. If it could be triggered by Battle Damage too, it would become an amazing card.

Sacred Gear - Forbidden Balor View

You take no battle damage from battles involving this card. Opt: inflict 300 damage for each DxD, or place 1 counter which can prevent battle damage, during your opponent's turn, if you have the pawn, place 1 counter on it. The monster with the best effect, has the worst protection. I mean, preventing from burn is really situational, and against Tricksters you would need way to many counters, so it can't stand the current meta. I'd only use the burn effect.

Rossweisse - DxD (tuner rook)

When Summoned: you can SS 1 DxD Token. I think the "once while face-up on the field" and "you can only use this effect opt" are redundant, because you can only control one Rossweisse. Btw, this isn't a Choose card, and I like it, and it allows some Synchro/Link plays (you could even make an easy Beelze with this).

Nordic Magic

Prevents from banishing. Opt: target a DxD, it can't be destroyed, or if you have the pawn, your monsters gain 600 ATK and DEF. They should be both Quick Effects. Why would I want Battle protection in my turn? Are you scared of Honests? Also, the declaring a type is useless, since DxD is a full-Fiend Archetype, except the Aces.

Evil Piece System - DxD

King: move 1 DxD monster to a MMZ. If a King is attacked, change the target to a Rook. This is an amazing translation of the Castle into Yugioh, so congrats on that. The moving effect is really interesting as well.

Queen: use Bishop/Knight/Rook's effect. Well, actually, the Queen can't move as a Knight :D

Bishop: opt, you don't have to pay to activate cards. Payment isn't really relevant nowadays, and it would've been only 600 LP, so I'd change it to "Gain 600 LP", but it's gonna be useless anyway.

Knight: opt, a Knight attacks twice. Knight beatdown?

Rook: opt, protection from battle for Rooks. Situational, and not that strong either.

Pawn: it becomes another type. Ok, so this Pawn is promoting. Interesting translation.

The field spell is fun, but doesn't add consistency, doesn't use Equip Spell and doesn't really fit into the Archetype. The only useful effect will be the king's one.

Rating Game - DxD

Opt, pay 600 LP, activate one effect.

Effect monster: it becomes a tuner. Yeah, there are only 2 of them, after all.

Fusion: send this card and a DxD monster to the GY, end the Battle Phase. Jesus, I'd rather run 3 copies of Scrubbed Raid. And the deck can't afford losing a monster (and this card gets destroyed too).

Synchro: one Synchro Material is placed on top of the Deck. You can use this opt, paying, and it's a trap. It should at least come back to your hand.

Xyz: you don't have to detach 1 Xyz Material. Decent effect.

Link: a Link and a monster swich place. Erm, there's only one Link monster. Look at its Link Arrows. Do you really want it in a Main Monster Zone?

I think this card is pretty weak. You could either remove the opt clause and making so you can use each effect opt, or making the effects much much stronger. Also, this should be a Spell.

Hyoudou Issei, Balance Breaker - DxD

Protection from Battle destruction and King destruction. A Dragon-Type...? The effect isn't really strong, but I'll get a good beater with the Equip Spell.

Gremory Rias, Crimson-Haired Ruin - DxD

Link Bottom-Left and Bottom-Right. Opt, pay 600 LP, SS a DxD from the GY. It's considered a Rank 4. You meant "Level" 4, right? Also, I don't think you'll want to use this card to make a XYZ. Btw, this is actually a really good Link.

Himejima Akeno, Fallen Angel - DxD

Also a Fairy-Type. Opt, detach, change the battle position of a Set monster. I mean. There are generic Rank 4 monsters that are way better than this. There's even a better version of this effect: check "Photon Papilloperative" out. The Fairy-Type is quite useless, but I get it's just flavour related to the Anime.

Argento Asia, Former Holy Priestess - DxD

Opt, detach, shuffle 6 DxD cards and draw 1 card. Search the pawn if it was shuffled. Since Asia doesn't have high ATK, and I like this monster, so I'd remove the 6 cards to shuffle to search the pawn. It will make this card less situational.

Toujou Koneko, Nekomata Mode - DxD

Also a Beast-Warrior Type. Opt, when a Trap is activated, detach and negate it, then DxD are unaffected by Traps. Well, of course I love this card and I don't have to explain why. And it has one of the few decent protection effects, so that's a point to Nekomata. But, since this card is a Rook, I'd give it at least 2500 ATK.

Yuuto Kiba, Demon Sword Wielder - DxD

Gains 100 ATK for each Equip on the field. Opt, detach, equip to this card Equips from the GY with effect negated. I was joking when I said Knight Beatdown, but this could really be a thing. One of the strongest XYZ so far.

Quarta Xenovia, Holy Sword Wielder - DxD

When attacks, you can change battle position. Honest effect by detaching 2 Materials. Yeah, I'm beginning to like the XYZs. This is a really well-made beater.

Shidou Irina, Angelic Ace - DxD

If it does damage, add a banished/in the GY DxD to the hand. Again, I think you meant Level 4. This Synchro has poor recovery, but it's something.

Vladi Gasper, Cardboard Box Vampire - DxD

Also a Zombie-Type. Remove 1 Balor Counter, a card can't attack/effect negated. You can get only one Balor Counter per turn, so I'd remove the opt clause. Good monster, btw, but I'd give it some more ATK.

Rossweisse, Valkyrie - DxD

Also a LIGHT Fairy. You can discard a DxD, negate a Spell and banish it. In-Archetype Naturia Beast, and it's a really great card.

Ok, this was a big Archetype.

I like the idea, and there are some accurate Chess-translated mechanics, but this deck wouldn't stand a day in the current meta. They're just too slow to be competitive.

I might be wrong on some points, and the best thing to do to tell if an Archetype is good is just seeing it on a real duel.

Hope this helped.

Thank you very much for giving feedback. Much of the chess mechanics were something added later, so they weren't integrated that much in what I already made. I did ultimately hold back, and that seems to of resulted in some effects being underwhelming and as such.

The plan is to eventually get to a point in testing this out in a real duel. I also think based on your post, it's highlighted that I needed to explain some things about the archetype in more detail and justify the design of each card. Since you took the time to give feedback I think it is a good idea to respond to most of the comments, since you also brought up some interesting points.

[spoiler= Response]

Hyoudou Issei - DxD (pawn)

When Summoned: search a monster (except itself). Basic searcher, also if you search you can't equip Gear. Maybe it's slow, but the fact that the equip spell is really, really good makes it more balanced.

Most of the monsters in the Main Deck state you can only use each effect once per turn. Unless I am missing something, it should not work like Shaddolls when you only get 1 effect per turn, but rather the monsters should work like Souleating Oviraptor and the Equips should work like World Legacy - "World Chalice". So you should be able to Summon Issei, get an optional search, then activate his effect during your turn to Equip Boosted Gear from the Deck or GY.

I could make most of the effects simultaneous with their summoning effects, then just have that combined effect with the hard once per turn clause.

Same as before, but using each of the following effects once per turn. So you can search with the Equip, as well generate/remove boosto counters. The main other use of the counters is it utilises two moves Issei can use in the anime; dragon shot (destroy it) or dress break (negate its effects).

The design of this card was made in mind of Boosted Gear doubling Issei's power whenever he uses his Boost ability. That is represented within the counters. The Pawn aspect of Issei is related to later events in the Light Novel and Anime. Same with why the rest of the cards have additional effects when you control Issei, although that's more related to the relationship with each character.

Basically, I was thinking of Rias having an effect similar to Summoner Monk. Ideally I want all of the monsters to be played, so instead of searching with the Equips, Rias can just get the monster on the field, at the cost of discarding the Equip instead of course. Opening with Rias and an Equip is pretty important then.

The protection effect was supposed to go hand in hand with Xyz Issei. The effect of banishing a Set card means you should also be able to target face-down monsters too. A card like Amaterasu couldn't respond to this card then for example.

Hmmm... Shouldn't the way it is worded mean you can still activate the other effect though? You just have to use it during your turn after you summon the monster instead. Reviving from the GY was for Link Rias. Summoning from the hand is still useful for Issei, Asia, Kiba, Irina and Rossweisse. I could make another Spell/Trap card as an archetype Monster Reborn.

The effect still targets, so it's not completely unstoppable. I could make it not target, though. Do you mean changing the cost of shuffling 1 monster?

Argento Asia - DxD (bishop) An Italian name! Did you know Asia Argento is an actual Italian actress?

2000 DEF. When Summoned, search a S/T. Same as the pawn. And I'm more and more convinced that the monsters shouldn't have the "choose which effect to activate" restriction. Also, this card can only search 2 cards...?

Only recently while I was researching! Right now that's it. I agree it needs to be more, but I wanted to get feedback on what I made so far regardless.

It's a Continuous effect, it doesn't belong to the opt clauses.

i think I understand what you mean, it's because it's part of the "following effects".

Nah, it's more like Yosenju Karma monster, E.g. If this card is Normal Summoned, you can: Immediately after this effect resolves, Normal Summon 1 "Yosenju" monster from your hand, except "Yosenju Kama 1". Another example would be Rival Arrival coming out in Circuit Break.

The problem is the first effect shouldn't be placed before "the following effects" clause, since it's shouldn't be optional. The second effect is like D.D. Warrior Lady. It makes more sense when you take into account the Field Spell's effect for Rooks.

Yuuto Kiba - DxD (knight) Ok, I admit that. The first time, I read "Kaiba".

When Summoned, mill a DxD and its Equip Spell. Ok, as for now, I don't get why you should mill cards. But I'm sure there will be a card that will explain me.

Yeah, it's with the Xyz.

Since the Extra Deck monsters are for the most part generic, you can dump that monster and the equip to then go into the sent monster's Extra Deck variant without having to Summon them and still get the Equip Card on them. That reminds me, I think it should be just named Equip Card with the new text being used since the new rules. There's also Link Rias too.

Shidou Irina - DxD (ace)

When Summoned, add 1 DxD to the hand from the GY. Yep, if I played this Archetype I'd want to both recycle and search the Equip. Also, this card is a Tuner only in the Image.

Whoops, my bad!

Fair enough. Irina just produced a lot of advantage on all her effects, so I thought it might be too much.

It should work like Gorz, so it will respond to whatever damage inflicted, battle or effect.

Mhmm. Gasper I found the hardest to figure out outside of phase manipulation. Perhaps that effect needs a rework.

Yeah, it's a bit redundant having both now looking at it, including the fact you can only control 1 of them. Keep in mind DxD monsters can only be Tributed and used as material for DxD monsters. You can't Tribute Rossweisse for Vanity's Fiend for example, or Synchro into Beezle with the token. That does also mean you cannot Kaiju them or your opponent using something like Invocation.

I'll admit these cards I really struggled with. Nordic Magic definitely needs some work. Type is somewhat relevant with Extra Deck monsters.

Originally Evil Piece System was going to have a Summoning effect from the Deck as well but you couldn't Tribute or use it as material that turn, which would of helped consistency a bit. The new cards involving moving monsters around was such a neat idea I had to include it. I could just make the original effect separate from the type effects, since they are quite situational.

Rating game is pretty weak I agree. I thought it being a trap would give it better usage since it could be used during your opponent's turn, but I understand that Traps are inherently slow. Link effect was just in the advent of a Monster Reborn effect, so you could put that Link monster back into the Extra Monster Zone. I'll definitely consider making the Fusion effect less costly.

Hyoudou Issei, Balance Breaker - DxD

Protection from Battle destruction and King destruction. A Dragon-Type...? The effect isn't really strong, but I'll get a good beater with the Equip Spell.

Yeah, Dragon-Type :P. The effect could include itself. The higher ATK syncs well since you can destroy or negate bigger monsters with the second effect of Boosted Gear.

I mentioned in the OP about being considered a Rank 4 and Ace monsters.

Wanted to give synergy with Power of Destruction and its own Equip. I'll definitely check that card out. Yeah just flavour text.

Noted.

It gets a 600 boost from the Equip which shouldn't be optional.

Shidou Irina, Angelic Ace - DxD

If it does damage, add a banished/in the GY DxD to the hand. Again, I think you meant Level 4. This Synchro has poor recovery, but it's something.

I'll think of something better then.

I did try to keep a general theme with each card's stat line. I'll keep in mind giving Gasper more ATK.

Thanks again for the feedback!

It looks like I completely missed the fact that there isn't the "You can only use one effect of *monster* once per turn". This definitely makes the monsters more viable.

With some work and some fixes it could have potential. In fact, this could become a great Archetype.

Also, this made me think about watching the Anime, it looks cool.

It is an Ecchi series at its core, but it has a surprisingly interesting story and fairly deep lore involved. It's one of the few series of the genre I actually enjoy.

The Anime is getting a 4th Season sometime soon, while the light novel is still going at currently 23 volumes, so there is quite a lot of content involved here.
