New Video Game Concept! (Original Game)

I don't know what to call this unfortunately. I'm not even sure about whether or not this belongs in this part of the forums on this site. I just wanted to write down the beginnings of the ideas for my game, and get some comments on how it could work. Who knows, maybe someone who is good at programming would like to make this a full game.

 

Let's start with the basics. This game is going to be part MMO, part RPG, part Survival/Action. Think of it like, Diablo III meets Undertale meets God of War, or something like that... Basiclly, I'm going to combine the best of all worlds. This means epic battle system, extremely intense story that you play an important role in, open, vast, sanbox worlds with craftable items, and statistical changes in class, armor, abilities and more. Let's begin with my ideas.

Classes are the types of beings you are. These determine the powers you start off with, gain by rank up, and have strength in. Let's take a look at the ones I have already.

 

Purity: Given Divine powers, this is mainly a Support class, but any damage moves you use with this attribute will deal double damage to Shadow class.

 

Shadow: These are the sneaky ones. These guys focus on de-buffing your opponent at all times. Decent Speed and Attack stats.

 

Blaze: The element of fire. Also, one of the four starting classes. Incredibly high Physical Attack stat, but very low HP stat.

 

Flora: Maybe the most broken of them all. The second of the starting four, this one focuses on HP. They can do a decent amount of damage, but they really abuse self-healing spells a little too much.

 

Aqua: Another starter, these ones have good Ranged Attack and good Ranged Defense. Probably the best class for a beginner.

 

Tesla: The final starting class, These guys are really quick. Main stat is Speed, obviously, but they have a decent Ranged Attack.

 

Terra: This class is the most bulky. Boasting high Defense stats in both forms, they can take some heavy hits. Most can't hit back that hard though.

 

Cosmic: The power of Space itself, this one is completely equal in all stats. Maybe another easy to master class, but takes some work to unlock it.

 

Power: These guys are for pros only. They have insanely overpowered spells to their name, but they all cost HP. A Power-Flora hybrid would be broken as hell...

Honestly, I got hardly anything here. I know that we will start the game by having a quick character selection based on appearance, starter class, and name. Then, depending on what starting class you chose, you will enter a fight with a Deity Rank NPC. This will be the tutorial. You are also a Deity Rank at the moment. This means you will have access to all the powers your class can have at Deity Rank. The tutorial will teach you the basics of fighting, but you will still lose the fight.

 

In this world, when you die, you "Respawn" in the game's canon. But, this technique is controlled by a giant machine of sorts(I dunno yet). You have "Respawned" but you don't have anything you previously did. This is because the Deity Rank NPC you fought has destroyed the Item saving mechanic in the machine before your fight with him. Now that you have died and lost all your stuff, he has gone thriugh with destroying the machine all together. Now no one can "Respawn" and it is up to you to fix it.

 

It is(or was) against the law for anyone to provide any other way of accessing the "Save Files", which is how the machine previously "Respawned" people. However, a Priest saw the dillema everyone was in, and broke the law by meddling in them anyway. He succeeded, but with a cost. He could no longer be a pure Priest, he was now corrupted. Since his mindset stayed the same, he decided to give out his services for free, allowing you and everyone else to "Save" freely. But, this puts him in danger, and eventually you will have to save him.

 

Your main goal during the whole game is to beat the Deity Rank that destroyed the machine so you can get it repaired, and keep the world at peace. Death had never really been a problem until now, so you must do everything you can to restore the universe.

Rank are basically your levels n this game. Gain enough EXP, you Rank up. Here are all the Ranks in order:

 

Noob

Player

Novice

Advanced

Apprentice

Chieftain

Elite

Professional

Swag

Extreme Swag

Demi-God

Deity

 

Obviously, when you restart the game you become a Noob Rank.

 

 

 

So that is what I have so far. Like I said, it is nowhere near complete, but I wanted to post this before I forgot, and wanted a little feedback on it. Hope you like it, and please tell me what you think.

Couple Things:

 

1. Multiplayer Games are never a good idea for making your first game. They are typically complicated and take far too long to make and to find a player base willing to play. Strongly advise against making this kind of game before getting more experience.

 

2. Typically you want to go for a Minimum Viable Product. This means you are making the game in a manner where you're cutting all parts of the game you don't technically need for it to be "the game". An example is Mario, where the minimum viable product would just be a block that runs from left to right, with some vaults to jump over and some pits to fall into. Everything else is just in Mario. The only thing you need is the jump, but it's generally agreed upon that Mario's run is important enough to put in since it affects so much of how the jump works.

 

For your game, you would make a basic Fighting Encounter. You have no abilities, your enemy has no abilities, there is no art for anything except for simple blocks. The only thing you need is how the fighting works, like a simple attack or two (probably an auto-attack) and basic movement. If you can't make that core experience of the game interesting, it isn't worth building off of. Rather change how it works, add some interesting mechanics, or scrap the idea entirely.

 

So don't make the classes first, make the combat, and then build off of that with stats, and then if there are any discernable playstyle, you can make those into classes. So classes and ranks aren't what you should be working on when making a game.

 

3. Don't use other games to describe your game, especially when you don't have quite a handle on why they made the design decisions they did. An example is that Undertale is an improvement on JRPGs like Pokemon or Final Fantasy, fixing what's Minimum Viable Product used to be just the basic menu combat (which isn't exactly engaging) and added in FPS/Bullet Hell mechanics and a Morality System. This made the game a lot more interesting and engaging to play. 

 

If you are going for a game like this with God of War, then I recommend doing something with the JRPG genre, and then making it single player. 

 

4. Recommended Resources for learning how to make games

  1. Extra Credits, a YouTube channel with around a million subs with hundreds of videos that talk about game design, development, the industry, and theory while simultaneously making the videos really entertaining.
  2. Mark Brown on YouTube typically talks about particular games or genres and simultaneously talks about game design concepts. He has real quality content and I highly suggest watching some of his stuff
  3. If you want to be more on the Art side, Kienan Lafferty is your guy  (just assume YouTube until it isn't). Concept Art, Character Design, Anatomy, Art Industry discussions, and much more.
  4. Treehouse Project is an online resource that has several classes that teach you game development, several programming languages, web design, etc. It does have a monthly subscription though similar to Netflix and some MMOs, but they have a free trial if you only want to look.

 

5. Games that could help you figure out what you want:

  1. Nova-111 is a turn based game similar to old roguelikes but with real-time events such as enemies and falling objects that make you more engaged, giving you a timer without necessarily being on the clock.
  2. Mother or Earthbound is what heavily inspired Undertale, so I would play that for reference, and to learn more about JRPGs.
  3. Adventure Quest Worlds is an online multiplayer browser game that you could play right now for free. While the mechanics aren't great, and even farther from perfect, it has all of the parts a Multiplayer game should have other than a particular setting. Good for referencing typical MMOs, and how to get players interacting with each other in an MMO.
  4. Don't Starve and Subnautica are two very different looking games, but both are great survival based games that you could benefit off of. Not very expensive either
  5. Hyper Light Drifter for very fluid and interesting combat systems, while also having beautiful pixel art, a great soundtrack, and Souls-like levels of difficulty. 

 

Hope this all helped. I'm also making a game at the moment, and could probably show my process if I post it in a couple days. It's complicated, but the best I can describe it in so few words is that it's a 2D top down shooter with 3D mechanics and a 4D aesthetic.
