[ANIME] Power Balance and Talisman of Reversal

Recommended Posts

Power Balance

Normal Trap

Activate only when your opponent declares an attack with an even number of cards in their hand while you have no cards in your hand. Your opponent discards half the cards in their hand, then you draw cards equal to the number of cards your opponent discarded.

Talisman of Reversal

Normal Trap

If your opponent adds a card(s) to their hand by a card effect: Draw cards equal to the number of cards in your opponent's hand.

Why am I talking about these two draw Traps in the same post? Simple: I think that, with a couple of sensible changes (Power Balance having its attack declaration condition removed, Talisman of Reversal giving you cards equal to the number of cards added, and both of them being given a HOPT), these two cards could see print.

Now, as for the Duels they premiered in:

●Power Balance is from Yugi v. Kaiba in the Battle City finals and given that we've been caught in an endless parade of DM nostalgia, that Duel is bound to get some attention at some point.

●Talisman of Reversal is from Yusei v. Z-ONE, and not only would my nerf still make the scene from the anime a possibility (Z-ONE vomited 5 Timelords onto the field, then drew 5 cards because lolTimelordsupportguize, Yusei countered with this to also draw 5 cards), we're already seeing return to that Duel, with the last few nostalgia packs featuring Timelords and some of the cards Yusei used in that Duel (Clear Effector and Converging Wishes).

Thoughts?

●Power Balance is from Yugi v. Arkana, and given that we've been caught in an endless parade of DM nostalgia it might be fun to see that Duel get some attention.

Actually it was from Yugi vs Kaiba in the Battle City finals. Shadow Balance was the card in the Yugi/Arkana duel.

Ah yes, I remember these.

I feel like if Power Balance were ever a relevant card people would just make sure to have an odd number of cards in their hand when attacking wherever possible. Removing the attack condition would break it, because you can go first and go +5 as soon as your opponent draws their 6th card.

Talisman of Reversal is pretty awesome, what with the obnoxious degree to which people add cards to their hand nowadays. I think it'd be cool if it were like Maxx "C" and you drew a card each time your opponent adds a card for the rest of the turn. It'd still be no more objectionable than Droll and Lock Bird which is a hand trap and doesn't even give your opponent the option to continue adding.

I remember watching people playing with anime cards, and someone chaining Talisman of Reversal to their opponent's Talisman of Reversal, and it was just absurd levels of hype because you typically don't see 20-card hands outside Slifer OTK. That's how absurd and fun that card can be.

Also, maybe Power Balance can only be activated while your opponent controls cards? I was trying to eliminate the unfortunate weakness of it being a battle trap, but "Set, pass, lol +5" doesn't exactly sound like a good idea.

Isn't that what Shared Ride is for?

As for these, Power Balance is just no, no no, no no no, no, no, no no. It is minimal +1, then it goes to +3 and +5. In general though, making your opponent lose cards then gaining advantage based on that loss tends to be ridiculous, no matter the condition. Toad's Limit in the OCG is a bit of proof to that.

Talisman would be quite stupid if you set it going first. Early game drawing 3, 4 or 5 seems unfortunately more realistic then one would want to think. If it was changed to the number of cards added, it would make it worse then Shared Ride.

There isn't a lot of room to fix either of these and unfortunately, I think it will stay that way regardless of how the game goes. There is a reason neither of these have came out, and I am thankful for it.

And here I was thinking that they'd both be derided as underpowered for being Normal Traps with defined activation conditions, given all the S/T removal in the game, and Power Balance's hand minus on your opponent being mitigated by all the floating, and the fact that your opponent chooses what to discard. But apparently, Power Balance is just straight-up busted, and Talisman of Reversal is pretty damned good regardless.
