Alternative format(yugioh chess)

Recommended Posts

So i had an idea of slowing down the game to hopefully giving old decks a chance and slowing newer decks down a bit.

Rule changes for yugioh chess format:

*Seting a card from your hand without the aid of an effect, activating a spell card from your hand with out the help of an effect, summoning a monster from the extra deck with out the help of an effect will also use up your normal summon.

*players may have 3 copies of any card inside their deck.

* all other rules stay the same.

Critics are welcomed. So please don't hold back on what you think about this

I think that sounds like an interesting alternative to play something more akin to the oldest Yugioh out there.

Did you know? In the manga during battle city, you could only set 1 spell and 1 trap per turn? So if you set 2 cards one of them for sure had to be a spell. They also didn't let you use 2 copies of the same spell in the same turn. It was kind of weird all in all.

Your idea is still pretty rough around the edges in my opinion:

Too many spells and traps aren't exactly worth using by themselves, at least not to such a degree as to use up your turn's play on them. Meanwhile, there are other cards that are actually greatly boosted by this, like for example, Ties of the Brethren or Card Car D, which restrict your moves for the rest of the turn. Now your turn's plays are more restricted anyways so those cards' drawbacks are less potent.

That issue can be lessened by letting you have 2 actions per turn instead of 1.

1 Action will be the Normal Summon/Set of your turn.

1 Action will be the activation or setting of 1 single Spell/Trap Card on that turn.

Hopefully that is a good enough compromise between the single move turn-based chess idea, and the regular game.

The other issue about your format is the elephant in the room (sort of speak): You are not restricting Special Summons and those are the most common pieces with which something is played nowadays. Special Summons would  need to get their own sort of cap here for sure, otherwise the game would really stay close to how it is, except with nerfed S/T mechanics.

So card car d allows you to draw 2 cards after tributing it. Timing would be very important if a player were to do this as that could leave the play wide open as for ties of the breathren, yes it allows you to swarm but the draw back is paying 2000 lp and skipping ones battle phase. Tho that is useful on the 1st turn it still leaves the monsters special summoned open to removal from the opponent.

As for the special summon issue i did have the idea of limiting hand effects to once per round.

The idea of changing the format to 2 plays seems interesting tho.
