[DPR] A generic Draw 1 Normal Spell. How would you balance drawing cards?

Upstart Zombie

Spell - Normal

Draw 1 card, then end your current phase.

If you activate it Main Phase 1, you skip to the Battle Phase, so you can't use the card for that unless it's Honest or something. If you activate it MP2, any Spell or Trap you get can't be set. Also, it can't be exploited by Exodia since the Deck tries to draw everything in 1 turn, but using more than 1 of this card in a turn would skip your turn (also the reason there isn't a OPT effect).

I would find it interesting if there was a way to activate this on your opponent's turn, but tbh that would be terrible, so I'm saying end "your current phase" so you can't screw your opponent but if you find a way you could instead just skip your standby phase if you tried hard enough.

I'm a bit intrigued by card draw. Reckless Greed is probably my favorite since it can exploit itself, can be chained to Spell/Trap destruction, and was a card that was teched for such a long time in Decks without much card draw. I personally don't like Pot of Desires, since it's too good to be considered an interesting decision to play. Would love to hear your thoughts on the subject, since this was just a 5-minute idea not meant to be taken too seriously. Intentions were more to make a discussion rather than an hour-long debate on whether or not my card is a good or not.

Coming from someone who has analysed the draw enguines of multiple games i have to say yugioh is the worse as in the right restrictions someone can draw threw their entire deck to get the otk or exodia. This card does not provide proper restricted draw power but more aids in the brokeness of the game as a player could skip to the main phase 2 after activation to draw spam until they win. I would say one would have to end their turn to prevent this but that probably still won't deal with draw spam. So no not a good balance to draw enguines in my opinion. Its just another version of upstart goblin.

Well, the name literally says "Upstart [x]" so it's essentially Goblin 2-4. Sure, you cannot extend your plays after playing it, but what is to stop you from just doing everything you need to first, THEN using it. By then, the skip would be of no consequence. (Just as a note, some Decks don't even run Upstart after the hit, but are still getting cards like mad)

Yeah, you do need an OPT on this, but in all seriousness, Goblin got hit for a reason.

I for one think you are onto something with this card. I mean, there is little abuse in Exodia FTKs and in first turns because playing it just once would make you skip straight into your End Phase, and at any other turns in a way it's like a lite version of Cad Car D, in that it doesn't take your Normal Summon but it's not a +1 either. In first turn cases, this just has to be last card you play, and even then, you won't be able to follow up your plays with whatever card you draw from it.

The best case scenario would be to draw enough cards to establish a board, make your plays, use this to go into Battle Phase, deliver attacks, and on MP2 play whatever you drew. And, well, that may sound too good, but it's situational.

On the other hand, if you happen to draw this deck thinner instead of any of those playmaker cards that are the reason you run deck thinners in the first place... yeah, you will have to spend your MP1 and BP, so there is a risk or backfire factor there, too.

This is a really interesting and well designed card Eshai! Well done.

To answer some accusations that this card is OP:

This card [adds] more aids in the brokeness of the game as a player could skip to the main phase 2 after activation to draw spam until they win.

You're assuming that they're not going first. And in current Yugioh going second and winning that turn is completely legitimate since your opponent had an opportunity to set up a stun board, and as someone who has played a few of those "35 draw cards" FTK decks, trust me when I say that they are super fragile to any disruption. Honestly I'd say that the release of Ash Blossom probably ended that time of deck forever. Imagine if your Trade-In gets Ash'd, or your Library Ghost Ogred.

you cannot extend your plays after playing it, but what is to stop you from just doing everything you need to first, THEN using it.

Because then you are "doing everything you need to first" with one less card. The fact that this card demands to be used last is a big downside and makes it rather slow in this current world of fast yugioh.

Yeah, you do need an OPT on this,

No you don't, because using this card twice ends your turn (and that's assuming that you're not going first in which case 1 use ends your turn), and that's almost as good at making a second copy dead as straight up not being able to use it. Remember that while this card is stuck in your hand it is dead and thus effectively a -1.

Goblin got hit for a reason.

Yes, and that reason was being unrestricted deckthin that actually helped your wincon. It was limited specifically as a hit to Magical Explosion+Life Equalizer ftk. While personally I think Upstart Goblin should be banned (on the principle that the minimum deck size is 40, not 39 38 or 37), Upstart Zombie is not the draw-and-drop-deckthin that Goblin is. It requires being used at a certain time and has very real downsides.

Personally I like this card because it's interesting to think about which decks actually would play it. I think PSY-Frame for sure, and probably Dark Magician. I still plan on building Dark Magician PSY-Frame one day, and I'd run 3 of this card in that, but I sure wouldn't run Upstart Goblin since the deck probably goes to time 90% of matches.

So I don’t know if you guys figured this out, but if you activated this on the first turn of the game, you’re locked out of the Battle Phase and Main Phase 2 on that turn, so you would go straight to the End Phase (tbh that probably kills the card). Exodia FTK doesn’t really exist at the moment, but even if it did it wouldn’t use this card. I believe Exodia is going for more Traps now, which I think is better for the game.

I personally make cards to be interesting. Draconus said something about me really liking gimmicks, but that's not quite it. I think gimmicks in themselves are inherently interesting, but struggle to be good unless given real tools to be good. This is why Wind Witches are good. They aren't really interesting at all. There is no thought put in "play Crystal Wing using 1 card" and I'm pretty sure that was Konami's intention, because Crystal Wing’s price was a good lure for people to buy packs.

This card was a
5 minute idea and I’m surprised it got 4 people to comment, but one of my main points is that I think generic card draw is possible, konami is just doing it wrong. I really hate how many restrictions cards like Card of Demise gets. I think if a card has more than 1 restriction, it means the first restriction wasn't powerful enough. How about this:

Debt of Demise
Spell - Normal
Draw until you have 3 cards in your hand. At the end of your turn, banish cards from your side of the field face-down as many cards as possible up to
the amount of cards you drew by this card’s effect. If you did not banish cards equal to the amount of cards you drew by this card’s effect, banish your entire hand face-down.

For starters, no OPT, Special Summoning restriction, or Battle protection for your opponent. Has nothing to do with card draw so I’m not adding it. Instead, it’s temporary advantage at best and a minus million at its worst. I feel this is how Pot of Desires should have banished, rather than banishing cards from your Deck face-down (because that is beyond levels of BS). Again, this is a 5 minute idea, so there’s probably problems (probably the OCGrammar now I look at it).

Where would you run this? Probably OTK Decks, since temporary advantage doesn’t matter when you have a 10,000 ATK monster on the board at the face of your opponent. This is completely opposite to how it’s used now (used at the moment to get more Traps from your Deck, which you set to avoid the restriction). The card probably needs a OPT, but if you use 2 you’re probably losing everything you have similar to how Power Bond worked in the anime.

This was more supposed to be a place of discussing what would be good for generic draw, so if you have any card effect ideas of that sort you could put them in the description (although Idk if this would be qualified as an Advanced Single anymore)
