Murtaugh's Halloween Monster Deck

Recommended Posts

This is a theme deck, in that is was intended to take elements from throughout the Submachine series and form them into a cohesive deck. As such I will explain my card choices both in terms of function and in terms of how they fit in the storyline. The explanations contain spoilers for "Submachine", but probably not much more than you've already seen if you read Murtaugh's dialogue throughout the Halloween Event.

[spoiler=Main Decklist with explanations]1x Cyber Ouroboros [spoiler=Explanation]It's a -1 Upstart Goblin with Gold Sarc. Helps dig for Grinder or Tempest, the deck's wincons.
Thematically, the ouroboros appears throughout the Submachine games in certain locations.

1x Dot Scaper [spoiler=Explanation]Just a card that Summons itself upon being banished, allowing me to generate advantage with Inferno Tempest.
Has no real parallel in the games.

1x Giant Rex [spoiler=Explanation]Just a card that Summons itself upon being banished, allowing me to generate advantage with Inferno Tempest.
Has no real parallel in the games.

3x Grinder Golem [spoiler=Explanation]Necessary to trigger Inferno Tempest on my own terms. Also makes Decode Talker with 1 token left for ramming.
I don't believe that any of the Submachine games so far depict circular saws, but I know in my heart that they are out there somewhere in the Subnet.

3x Mezuki [spoiler=Explanation]Part of the Zombie engine. Also pretty sweet to banish if you have Burial from a D.D./Omega.
Thematically, although there are no zombies in Submachine, it fits in with the ancient civilisation themes involved.

2x Necroface [spoiler=Explanation]I decked more than one opponent out between this and Inferno Tempest.
Thematically, although there are no zombies in Submachine, it kinda fits in with the ancient civilisation themes involved.

3x Shiranui Solitare [spoiler=Explanation]Part of the Zombie engine. Summons Spiritmaster upon being banished, allowing me to generate advantage with Inferno Tempest.
Thematically, although there are no zombies in Submachine, it fits in with the ancient civilisation themes involved.

1x Shiranui Spiritmaster [spoiler=Explanation]Part of the Zombie engine. Pops an opponent's card upon being banished, usually my own Grinder Golem.
Thematically, although there are no zombies in Submachine, it fits in with the ancient civilisation themes involved.

2x Uni-Zombie [spoiler=Explanation]Part of the Zombie engine. I only run 2 because it's not ideal without also having a Level 4 Zombie in the GY first, and I was pushed for space.
Thematically, although there are no zombies in Submachine, it fits in with the ancient civilisation themes involved.

2x Burial from a Different Dimension [spoiler=Explanation]Monster Reborn if I have a banished Mezuki. If I banish a Necroface with Gold Sarc, it can return it to GY for a second go when I Tempest.
Thematically, it fits in with the ancient civilisation/tomb themes involved.

1x Castle Link [spoiler=Explanation]I had to run it as part of the Monster Duel rules. My deck idea didn't really work with any of the Action Fields, and this one had the least impact on the game.
There are more than a few castles in the Submachine.

1x Dimensional Fissure [spoiler=Explanation]It banishes stuff. Nice floodgate to be able to maindeck.
It's literally a giant karma portal. The reason I mentally connected Mur's abilities to banishment.

Honestly, if you needed an explanation for this card, you probably weren't paying attention.

3x Gold Sarcophagus [spoiler=Explanation]At worst it's an E-tele in this deck.
Thematically, it fits in with the ancient civilisation/tomb themes involved.

3x Inferno Tempest [spoiler=Explanation]The wincon of this deck. Amazing meme card, probably my favourite Yugioh card. I am honoured to have been able to build a deck around this card and actually beat people. Yugioh is an amazing game.
I could argue that this represent's Murtaugh's destructiveness, but really it has no parallel in Submachine, other than them both being two of my favourite things.

3x Left Arm Offering [spoiler=Explanation]Searches Inferno Tempest, but I also used it to search Burial from a D.D. more than once. The cost can be used to trigger effects, which actually won me a game when I banished Giant Rex, Spiritmaster and Necroface with this card.
So back in the early games, the only real thing we knew about Murtaugh was that he lost one of his arms. Well guess what, there's a Yugioh card about losing an arm. And yes, it is the correct arm. Thematically at its best when I search Dimensional Fissure, since it's losing his arm that allowed Mur to create karma portals.

3x Magical Contract Door [spoiler=Explanation]Searches Grinder Golem.
This card's artwork bears a striking resemblance to some of the devices that appear throughout the series.

2x Pot of Desires [spoiler=Explanation]Draw power. I only ran 2 because I was running a 39 card deck and it is obviously dead after Inferno Tempest. Banishing stuff face-down wasn't too nice either, since it meant that they weren't in my deck or GY to be triggered by Inferno Tempest. Still pretty nice with Omega though.
Has no real parallel in the games.

3x Soul Absorption [spoiler=Explanation]Gains LP from doing what the deck does best. Can easily get you above 30k LP, meaning that if my opponent had a few cards left in their deck, I could just wait for them deck out from natural draws.
The Submachine series does occasionally deal with soul-like themes, but if I'm being it has no real parallel in the games.

1x Upstart Goblin [spoiler=Explanation]Deckthin. An extra spell for Magical Contract Door.
Has no parallel in the games at all, and thank goodness.

1x Macro Cosmos [spoiler=Explanation]Banishes stuff. Only trap because this is a turbo deck, but I couldn't pass on one of the best floodgates in yugioh that also turns my Giant Rex into Trick Clown.
While it has no solid parallel in the games, it's the kind of artwork you'd find in the Submachine. It's theme-appropriate for sure.

I will do a decklist for the Extra Deck later, along with a functional explanation, but no thematic explanation as I did not plan the Extra Deck from a thematic point of view at all.

It hurts my soul to see a banish deck without my boy Gren Maju

For real though this looks really creative and well thought out, props to you.

It hurt me too, but it just didn't have a place in the deck, either thematically or functionally.
