Charmer/Familiar-Possessed Support

Armoire

I was going to post this in Casual Multiples, but I felt like these were strong enough to push Charmers/Familiar-Possessed decks into the competitive scene.

[spoiler=Monsters (3)]

All Artwork (3) Made by: BatMed

(Thanks BatMed, for making such amazing art!)

[spoiler=Lore]You can only control 1 "Gust Dragon". If you control a Spellcaster monster, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). If this card is sent from the field to to GY: You can target 1 monster in your GY with 1500 ATK and 200 DEF; Special Summon that monster.

Gust Dragon's meant to bring back any of the charmers' familiars (1500 ATK and 200 DEF) from the GY to gain their effects. Ideally, it would target the next two to activate their effects. As a cherry on top, instead of only activating when destroyed, I had be able to activate even if it's sent from the field to the GY when used as a Tribute to summon a Familiar-Possessed Wynn.

The next two cards are unique familiars because Familiar-Possessed Dharc/Lyna had some extra effects, so I figured to have these also have unique effects, where they pull the Familiar-Possessed, Charmer, and 1500ATK / 200DEF monsters together. They're also the "end-goal" of the familiar series since they activate via Special Summon and give benefits when used for a summon.

[spoiler=Lore]You can only control 1 "Meta Bat". If you control a Spellcaster monster, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). If this card is Special Summoned: You can target 1 card on the field; destroy it. If the targeted card was a Spell/Trap Card, cards and effects cannot be activated in response to this effect's activation. Once per turn: You can pay 500 LP; change the Atribute of this card. If this card is send to the GY for the summon of a "Familiar-Possessed" monster, that monster gains these effects:

● This card gains 200 ATK and DEF for every different Attribute among the monsters on the field.

● If this card attacks or is attacked, your opponent cannot activate cards or effects until the end of the Damage Step.

For Meta Bat (I couldn't think of a better name), flavor-wise, it's supposed to represent the whole classic DARK theme: Destruction upon Summon and LP Payment to change its Attribute. If you have a "Charmer" monster, this can set you up ASAP to summon any Familiar-Possessed monster from the Deck.

Its flexibility allows you to transform any Charmer into a formidable attacker. Also a good tool to get rid of backrow.

[spoiler=Lore]You can only control 1 "Blessed Bliss". If you control a Spellcaster monster, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). When this card is Special Summoned: You can target 1 Spellcaster monster with 1500 DEF in your GY; Special Summon it in Attack Position or face-down Defense Position, then this card's Attribute becomes the same as that monster's. If this card is send to the GY for the summon of a "Familiar-Possessed" monster, that monster gains these effects:

● This card gains 200 ATK and DEF for every different Attribute among the monsters on the field.

● While there is a monster on the field with a different Attribute than this card, this card cannot be destroyed or targeted by your opponent's card effects.

Happy Lover's upgrade is the foil to Meta Bat, in which instead of destroying opponent's resources, it recovers your own. Like an angel, get it?
But it also matches attribute depending on the monster revived, instead of being more versatile like Meta Bat. Sets up plays to get into a Familiar-Possessed monster right away and get its effect.

Oh, and instead of turning it into a relentless attacker, it gives it protection (i.e. blessing, as you can tell, I had fun with this).

[spoiler=Spells (2)]

[spoiler=Lore]When this card is activated: You can activate 1 "Unpossessed" from your Deck, except "Unpossessed Altar". While this card is on the field, "Unpossessed" is unaffected by card effects. Once per turn, during either player's turn: You can declare 1 Attribute; all monsters on your opponent's side of the field become that Attribute for the rest of the turn. You can change 1 face-down Defense Position "Charmer" monster you control to face-up Attack or Defense Position. If a "Familiar-Possessed" monster is Special Summoned from your Deck to your side of the field: Draw 1 card. You can only use this effect of "Elemental Altar" once per turn.

This is the field spell that makes the whole deck consistent. It fetches Unpossessed right away, makes sure Unpossessed stays on the field, enables your Charmers to steal your opponent's monsters more freely, and rewards you for summoning a Familiar-Possessed monster via Unpossessed or their effects.

There's an odd part of the effect which is "all monsters on your opponent's side of the field" I used this instead of "all monsters your opponent controls" so it also affects monsters that are summoned after the effect is used.

[spoiler=Lore]Activate 1 of these effects:

● Target 3 "Charmer" monsters, "Familiar-Possessed" monsters, and/or monsters with 1500 ATK and 200 DEF in your GY; shuffle all 3 into the Deck, then draw 2 cards.
● Reveal any number of "Familiar-Possessed" monsters in your hand and shuffle them into the Deck, then draw cards equal to the cards you shuffled into the Deck +1.
● Target 1 monster you control;  Special Summon 1 "Charmer" monster from your Deck with a different Attribute than the Attribute of the targeted monster in Attack Position or face-down Defense Position.

You can only activate "A Charming Bond" once per turn.

Since you'll be filling up your GY pretty fast, I thought it would be ideal to give them the ability to recycle. And to add consistency to a somewhat-bricky deck, I was also compelled to give them some really good draw power (ala Yang Zing Path).

Shuffling Familiar-Possessed/Charmers into the Deck since you wouldn't want to draw into your Familiar-Possessed monsters/have a useless Charmer in hand. This should let you run less Familiar-Possessed monsters.

The last one is just for convenience to get the "right" Charmer out at the right time.

I'm still not sure how I feel about this one, but suggestions are welcome.

Overall, this support gives Charmer/Familiar-Possessed Decks:

  • More consistency and less bricking.
  • Use the Charmers' effects more reliably.
  • Generates card advantage and one-card plays (via the new Familiars).
  • A more focused playstyle of getting out Familiar-Possessed monsters using Charmer monsters.
  • A more reliable beatdown strategy for Familiar-Possessed monsters (via the new Familiars).

I would appreciate any feedback given, and if you did read through all this (regardless if you comment or not), thanks for your time and I hope you enjoyed it. :)

Gust Dragon really scares me, as it can Summon itself back. However, as far as I can see, the only real problem in the current Link Format is using this to Link lock your opponent, as when used as a Link Material, it just comes back, and with cards like Ventriloquist on the rise (And DNA Surgery granting Cyberse)...it's not as bad as one might expect. However, as this archetype doesn't need an ED, they could easily tech in the cards to Link Lock your opponent without suffering much consistency loss. I would really suggest it say "1 other monster" so it can't target itself, or if doubles are also a problem, simply make it unable to target a monster with its own name.

Meta Bat provides some destruction for the archetype, especially in regards to the backrow, so that's nice. Unfortunately, the buff provided by this and the later card don't work. Want to know why? Familiar-possessed monsters aren't Summoned via tribute; they are Summoned by sending them to the GY, and unfortunately, YGO cares enough to differentiate the two. The fact that it can substitute as any familiar is neat, however, and so, with some rewording, this card would make a very good addition to the line-up.

Blessed Bliss has the aforementioned bug regarding Tributes, but w/e. Finally, some swarming! And the protection granted is also nice, even if we do have Unpossessed. Regardless, you obviously have a clear idea of what they need. Good card.

Altar is again, a great card. It also actually benefits the Charmer attribute stealing, so grats. Draw power, massive enabling, flipping; my own problem is perhaps making the draw power normal OPT, just to limit the spamming a little.

Bond provides even more draw power and consistency, and fortunately restricts the archetype a little, and that's fine. Providing a little speed at the end is perhaps a bit much, however...I would suggest "You can only use 1 effect" HOPT on the monster.

This archetype dips over the line of being overpowered at times, but as one who loves the completely abandoned set, I'm glad to see someone making interesting support like this. A great method to buff them enough to be playable.

Good catch on Gust Dragon! I don't know why I didn't think about an infinite resource for anything that sends something to the GY. Made it so it can't target "Gust Dragon". I think that solves it.

Fixed the Tribute bug on Blessed Bliss and Meta Bat; I'm not sure why I thought they Tributed, haha.

For Elemental Altar, I just reversed the order of the last two effects, so the Draw is a HOPT, but you can flip Set Charmers more than just once per turn.

A Charming Bond was (kind of) overhauled. Removed its GY effect, has a HOPT, but is more versatile with what it can do, like shuffle bad hands.

Hopefully, with these changes, the problems addressed were fixed--and that it didn't make it underpowered. Thanks, Dova!
