Thar’s Permaban

I liked Thar, and I'd like for him to be back. I wasn't in the discord at the time (and I'm extremely inactive there at the moment), but if he was being harassed and bullied, that isn't cool.

That said, based on the description of what happened in discord and my memories of the events that unfolded, it seems Thar was very much sound, if rash, in his choice. I understand regretting choosing to leave in a definitevely permanent way when simply a temporary, if extended, hiatus ended up being good enough, but as a cyborg of principle, a permaban should be permanent. There are already too many members here who've been "permabanned" and have returned. It makes the threat of permabanning lose its power, if people can just come back after some reasonable amount of time and claim rehabilitation or harassment or what have you, be it true or not. I don't like that Thar doesn't get to come back, because I like him, but we do need permabans to exist for other situations, and we need to have integrity in that consequence's stipulations.

Listen. If everyone, including the authorities that be, want him back, it's not my place nor ability to stand in the way. And this isn't something I'll throw a fit over when it happens, hell, I'll welcome him with the rest of him.

I just have a strong opinion on the matter for various, previously explained reasons, but I'm not emotionally invested in my position. I said my stuff, everyone else said their own. Some more stuff will probably be said.

The important part is that both sides of the argument are put forward so the decision made will at least be an informed one.

Is that a bad thing?

The logic behind a perma is two-fold

(1) there are crimes too great to mend from

(2) there are people who do not seek to mend form any crime

I'd be interested in how you can validate both of these premises, because barring them, the concept of a permaban is illogical

Perhaps your logic is two-fold. My logic is dynamic. And as we are not in debates, and I have no interest in foolhardily attempting to change your mind when you've already determined you've won, I am not gong to expand upon it for you. If I've not explained myself adequately to the people whose thoughts I care about, I will reiterate. But, I elect not to indulge in your unwillingness to learn or consider compromises with other lines of thinking, in this instance.

*shrugs*

Just figured we'd both oppose capital punishment and support criminal justice reform IRL, so tried to apply a similar premise here. To each their own, I've made my position on Thar overtly clear

Do not try to appeal to my real-life political beliefs, particularly when they're not nearly comparable to the matter at hand.

Yes, please keep politics in general out of this, as it has zero do to with the subject at hand.

What does have to do with the subject at hand is that several members of the mod team have conferred, and we feel that before we make any final decisions, we will look into Giga’s concerns about Thar’s mental health and stability. So Dad has kindly volunteered to try and get in touch with Thar (in private) so he can get a gauge of Thar’s mental state and ability to cope with potential reemergence of jokes that were never funny to begin, just to ensure he can handle them if someone is immature enough to dredge up the past. We are doing purely so we can be certain that we would be making the right decision in allowing him to come back to a place that had previously been mentally and emotionally harming to him.

What’s the damblage- oh.

Yeah i have no idea why we just stopped talking about this. I’ll bring it back up in the mod forum and make sure we’re all still onboard.

General consensus is yes to bringing Thar back, i take it?

I think the conversation stopped because the members that posted already said what they needed to say, and we all understand this isn't a decision-making thread that'll culminate in taking action, but rather a thread made to identify the general opinions on this matter from regular members.

Though from what I take of this, there isn't any sort of discussion already taking place at the mod forum, potentially having been opened once this public thread went silent.

I guess there's only like 6 active mods and maybe a couple don't want anything to do with this matter, so I'm lead to believe everything is being dealt with via PMs? That's an interesting choice.

I think after reading the thread entirely, Thar would be fine coming back. We can theorize about if it'll become a detriment for him or not, but I don't think there's any way to guarantee other than Thar trusting himself or us staying open for if he needs it. Does he have access to the Discord chat? if so, he kind of already has access to many members of YCM already.

From early comments in this thread I was leaning towards no at the beginning, but at some point the sanctity of permabans being permanents fell off from the priorities list. Case by case sounds good to me.

I started this and I'm gonna see it through.  I was the one who brought it up, I was the one who made sure we had a discussion about this.  And I poked the thread because nobody else was saying anything but me.  I'm seeing to it that this discussion happens and right now to sit up here and say we stopped talking about it is a bunch of bullshit.

This was being discussed long before it was even public to the members.  Rodrigo contacted me and I brought it to the Mod Forum.  So yeah there's discussion going on but I'm spearheading it.  So y'all can kill that.  When we make a decision you'll know.  That's all it is.
