Some of these aren't new, but we get to see them for real now. Friendly reminder: please keep all spoilers for this set to one thread.

Ascend is the new mechanic.

  • When you cast a spell with ascend, if you already control 10 or more permanents, you get the city's blessing. If a permanent you control has ascend, you get the city's blessing the moment you control 10 or more permanents. (This is a special action to which players cannot respond, like flipping over a morph card or playing a land for turn.)
  • If you have the city's blessing, some effects get upgraded.
  • Multiple players may have the blessing.
  • You cannot lose the blessing once you have it.

Presumably you need to be able to target a creature to cast Enter the Unknown? So you can't do it turn 1 (unless you have Ornithopter)?

I like all these cards

Correct. But we can forgive it, since it's a Double Explore ™.

Flavorwise, the new mechanic seems a bit unspecific? Is it tied to a single plane where "the city" refers to something specific?

Pure guess but it probably refers to Orazca, known as the 'Golden City' and Ixalan's version of El Dorado.

This is 100% correct. The story is about finding and controlling the city of Orazca. That comes to a head in Rivals half of the story so Ascend captures that.

Anyway, whose hungry for some soup?

She is hungry, but I don't think it is soup that she is after.

I was playing Splendid Reclamation in my Karador list and this just seems better.

And since I haven't given thoughts on the cards I posted.

Etali seems like it can make for a neat commander. Red has a million ways to give it haste so it will get you a ton of value of the course of the game.

Huatli has a new friend. Other than that triggering off anything is real powerful and in the right deck she'll be able to ult in a single turn. Likely won't make it, but I'll see if my Rith commander wants to add her as a source of draw.

Order is weird. Which I can enjoy since the issue with the card is the order.

Please let Chupacabra be a sign of good removal for Rivals.

The lords are REALLY welcome since both of those tribes needed that push.

Amnesia's story implication is that the ship will keep sailing.

Ranger is cool, but the second explore can be blanked if you keep on top, but that also means you'll have a 4/3 100% so thats an ok trade off.

Path seems sweet. Sultai Sedisi auto include and even past that it is an insane source of card flow. I honestly think its comparable to Huatli. Draw is obviously more powerful, but you have an easier to cast card and she needs a turn of staying in play at the shortest to do anything.

I wonder what decks I own want Navigator. Take an extra turn effects are always worth seeing if they are worth it.

Summoner seems neat since she can let you capture the city all on her own given enough mana, and with support likely a lot less.

Good lord, merfolk are being pushed in this set. Kumena, Jadelight Ranger, Merfolk Mistbinder, Seafloor Oracle to top the curve... The only thing I think that's keeping them out of Standard at this point is energy.

Not sure which cards of those spoiled I want to pick up yet for decks. GW!Huatli seems really good in Hazezon but I bet she'll be pricy for a while. Same goes for Path of Discovery, minus the price. The vampires all look really good in Edgar, as well as Radiant Destiny; but I'm not sure if I'm keeping the deck together so we'll see. If I ever get off my lazy ass and build Riku, Brass's Bounty is an immediate add, as well as Pirate's Plunder. And do I ever wish I had a deck for Etali and/or Journey to Eternity: card looks nuts.

Also, more spoilers.

Full spoiler comes out around 10:30-11 EST today.

Not sure what I end up getting from this set so far for EDH decks? Like, Ephara wants Disperse to the Wind and Crafty Cutpurse, maybe Azor as well. If I ever get off my ass to build Riku, he gets Brass's Bounty. Hazezon probably wants that enchantment that makes a creature explore on ETB, as well as Wayward Swordtooth (which I'm posting below!) And Edgar ofc gets all the new vampires, but that's only if I end up keeping him together. Set definitely is an improvement on Ixalan, though. The power level feels a lot higher.

7TxWADLl.pngROWjOeZl.png

Wayward Swordtooth 2G
Creature – Dinosaur {R}
Ascend (If you control ten or more permanents, you get the city's blessing for the rest of the game.)
You may play an additional land on each of your turns.
~ can't attack or block unless you have the city's blessing.

Mastermind's Acquisition... Another piece to a nefarious puzzle...

The Immortal Sun was assumed to be a power source for the Planar Bridge, and the Sanctum of the Sun seems to support that its a huge mana source, but given how big it is, and the fact that Tezzeret is using his armbridge to transport the Sun no problem... What could it be for? To provide power to destroy/open/create something? And what do the Eternals have to do with it?

Bolas wants his own Planeswalker trap. The combination of the Bridge+Eternals+Sun means he has an army he can send to any plane while trapping any Planeswalkers that may be on it to die along with the inhabitants.

A lot of these rares are kind of on the weak side for limited and constructed. Overcosted bodies with non-guaranteed effects are pretty bad. The uncommons on the other hand are right where they should be. Chubrakraatal is an insane card in this format and is honestly better than 90% of the rares.
