[MtG] [RIX] Spoilers, 1/1-1/5

bury the year

Weaker rares should make for a better limited environment since it means you won't get blown out by bombs.

Anyway, the rest of the spoilers dropped. All stuff for limited since we'd gotten all the rares and mythics. Handful seem like they have standard chances, but the only card I'm interested in for Commander of that lot I think is Oathsworn Vampire in Edgar. Being able to recast something and get more vampires is pretty strong, and 2 mana works for the aggro build. However mine isn't as aggressive as some builds so it likely isn't as good in my list.

I'm not really at all interested in any of the Tribal stuff except possibly pirates, but I'm really disappointed that we didn't get any new Vehicles. I was hoping to build a proper fleet and have epic sea battles :-(

That said I love the Elder Dinosaurs and most of the transform cards, as well as some cool stuff like the Immortal Sun and Rekindling Phoenix, so I am excited!

I didn't even realize we didn't get any vehicles. Makes sense since they were boats and this part of the block is very much land locked.

Anyway, made my pass on the set to see what cards I'm interested in for commander. Decent list. Not not all will make it (I like to consider some suspect things), but several are locked already. They are

Elenda, the Dusk Rose

Huatli, Radiant Champion

Journey to Eternity

Hadana's Climb

Timestream Navigator

Forerunner of the Legion

Twilight Prophet

Champion of Dusk

Path of Discovery

Kumena's Awakening

Wayward Swordtooth

Tilonalli's Summoner

World Shaper

Oathsworn Vampire

Flood of Recollection

Pirate's Pillage

Legion Lieutenant

Azor's Gateway

The Immortal Sun

Arch of Orazca

20 cards overall. Edgar is going to get a fair bit of love. Card I'm most excited for is Timestream Navigator.

Chubrakraatal is an insane card in this format and is honestly better than 90% of the rares.

Don't try saying that five times fast, haha

Seconding the point on vehicles. Guess there wasn't enough room in the set with ascend being included? Also there were only four cards with explore, and three were rare.

Anyhow, posting my thoughts on what EDH picks I plan to add - not all of these lists are built yet, but good to plan ahead:

Hazezon:

  • Huatli, Radiant Champion
  • Path of Discovery
  • Wayward Swordtooth

Ephara:

  • Azor, the Lawbringer
  • Crafty Cutpurse
  • Release to the Wind

Edgar:

  • Arch of Orazca
  • Bishop of Binding
  • Champion of Dusk
  • Dusk Legion Zealot
  • Elenda, the Dusk Rose
  • Forerunner of the Legion
  • Legion Lieutenant
  • Martyr of Dusk
  • Radiant Destiny
  • Skymarcher Aspirant
  • Twilight Prophet

Riku:

  • Brass's Bounty

Alesha:

  • Dire Fleet Daredevil
  • Pirate's Pillage
  • Pitiless Plunderer

There's something I've noticed.

For the other sets that they started doing this in, there have been five cards that have been marked with the Planeswalker watermark, indicating them as 'story cards'. For Rivals, there have only been three such cards marked, those being Flood of Recollection, Induced Amnesia, and Mastermind's Acquisition.

What happened to the other two story cards? Were there a couple of cards that they bonked and failed to watermark? Hell, I would have figured that Azor's Gateway/Sanctum of the Sun would have been such a card, alongside The Immortal Sun itself! So what's going on here? o_O

I think it's because the last two "pivotal moments" are determined by fan interaction. Leading up to the set's release, Wizards did a geocaching event wherein you could score points for each faction. The faction with the most points would supposedly gain control of Orazca in canon.

What really disappointed me was that we had no pay-off for this:

I was hoping to have a subplot where the Dusk Legion gets corrupted by Alcazotz and we get some sort of avatar of Alcazotz as a Legendary.

You aren't the only one. I've seen a number of people speculating about the Bat God. Maybe something for a supplemental product.

The story is also just shorter. This only has 5 parts. For comparison Oath of the Gatewatch had 10, Aether Revolt had 9, and Eldritch Moon and Hour of Devastation had 8.

Patric Sullivan rants about Chupracabra

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/215979455?t=7h29m54s

And I agree with him 100%. Uber efficient removal stapled to a body for Scarab God just homogenizes the standard format even more.

Yeah, I agree too, his rant is spot on. A format where Baneslayer Angel is good is a healthy, fun, tense format. Scarab God is just too oppressive, so why would you play a Baneslayer Angel in this current format?

This set is making me very happy since i dont really play mtg anymore besides edh, and my edh deck is mayael so all these big dino bodies are very welcome :D

(zacama especially as he can either be a commander and if i stick with mayael it really doesnt hurt to draw him either)

Zacama is a really interesting Naya commander since he can combo pretty well. Sac outlet + Lands that tap for extra (Alters are really good for this) and Food Chain create infinite mana for example. EDIT: THIS IS WRONG. IT IS STILL GOOD WITH THESE TYPE OF EFFECT IF A LAND TAPS FOR A LOT, BUT IT ISN'T INFINITE. Really curious to see what people end up doing with him. And yea, the Dino are really cool and if I didn't already have a Naya deck I'd be on the Gishath train myself.

Also, speaking of commander, I've decided to add Paladin of Atonement, Radiant Destiny, and Dusk Legion Zealot to my consider list. I'm not happy with a handful of Edgar's Vampires so more options seemed good to add.

Edit: Also totally over looked Rith makes Saprolings making Tendershoot Dryad was more interesting for the deck.
