New Staff Member Election

BANZAI!!!!

Sadly I have to disagree. Because it causes the risk of people voting for someone who is far behind and their vote basically being wasted.

And the thing is, at least for me, I only nominated who I did because I felt they were the best fit. There are others (You and Fusion for instance) that I think could be good. But I didn't nominate because I wanted to only nominate the absolute top of my list. I didn't say it cause I don't want to skew things but since its brought up I find the "sure I'll nominate X to bump them over the threshold" to be an...odd choice to say the least.

The way I understood it, this round is like a talent search. Getting the foot in the door

Next round is:

Hi I'm X, I would do a, b, c, d to improve YCM if elected

Vote for me. Honestly, imo, next round should just be people putting up their platforms, and us secret balloting to Flame for election day

Well then I'm screwed because everyone else is so much better at using words lol

Right now we're trying to reach an agreement on how many of the current "most nominated members" we need to take to the next phase of polling before cutting off other "least nominated members".

Maybe have a very lenient cutoff point, so that the first round can eliminate a fair amount of the nominations? Of course, that may require adding one more round than intended, but I think an extra round offers a chance for a more fair election than people feeling slighted because they didn't get enough nominations. I think it'll be more fair if people were let into the election and eliminated in the first round rather than to not even be allowed into that first round at all.

I think at least for round 1, we do need to keep everybody nominated in the list.

This voting threshold was suggested within these latter pages, while earlier on in the thread it was just about showing submitting names.

For a proper threshold I think you'd be better off defining that this is happening from the get go. Otherwise many voters have come and gone already with potentially different mindsets between not wanting to name somebody they support that had already been named a couple times, and those that wanted to make sure a name appeared any number of times to help showcase how much more that member is wanted.

I feel like we need to stream line the list a fair bit. Be it the three I originally brought up or a higher one. Having Krow in serious contention because of a meme seems silly. Having a higher threshold is better since it better zeros in on the most supported candidates, but my earlier comment does create issues with that.

So I'll ask you, which seems better.

1) Leave the threshold at 3

2) Move it up to a higher amount

3) Move it up to a higher amount and leave the thread open for an extra 24 hours?

I also am not increasing the votes I originally submitted, but I don't know if everybody was in the same wavelength there with the votes.

Right now it seems we'll have a sprout of activity on trying to lift up names past the threshold for the next 7 hours. That's basically for those who are online tonight.

The amount of people nominated with 1 vote aren't astronomically big though. I doubt we'd have a 2 page list of nominations or anything either way.

Well.... I guess it's up to waiting and seeing what the list looks like a few hours from now.

I’d go with the third option. A threshhold of 4 or 5 seems better to me.

In hindsight, this might have been slightly more manageable if we had an official, regimented process for nominations instead of throwing them into an announcement thread like this. Making a note of that for next time.

Also low key saying there will be a next time soon, probably.

I'm in favor of leaving the threshold at three. While I did vote for Jesse to cross the threshold, I do stand by that nomination.

I think we need one final tally to confirm the votes, and then people can decide whether or not they stand by the nominations.

Don't think anyone is below 3...you'd just be eliminating Krow

I want to extend my thanks to the members that threw my name in for the ballot, I really appreciate the thought. I was under the impression I more or less had blended into the background, so it was cool seeing that acknowledgment.

With that said, I'm not going to run. I'm not as committed to the site as I once was and I think the best addition to the team right now would be a member that has actively shown their involvement with the community and that they care for the site's well-being. Maybe if this were a few years ago, I'd make a serious attempt at running. But this is a great pool of candidates, I believe the team's taking a step in the right direction here.

This may be a little excessive with 7 votes, but if allowed, I'd like to back my confidence for:

Sleepy-Caring and optimistic, puts great thought into her posts, and incredibly self-aware and humble

Sonic-Incredibly agreeable and kind, has shown support for other members and friends, and has grown into knowing his strengths and how he can contribute

Hina-Highly intellectual, incredible determination, and offers a unique perspective no one can replicate

And for the frontrunners:

Black-Plenty of experience in leadership and collaboration, actively works for his friends and fellow members, and is readily accessible

Parenthesis/Cow-Both have steadfast loyalty to their friends and YCM, never stopped putting forth suggestions and ideas for growth, and have grown to develop level heads and great communication skills

Yui-Open and likable, exercised great judgment as a mod, and people already want him back after he stepped down not too long ago

If that's too many votes for one person to cast, then just count Sleepy, Sonic, and Hina since the last four seem like a lock. Still wanted to voice my support.

I believe any of these members would prove to be a great asset for the mod team. I think almost all of them have been involved in the majority of threads concerning the site/community's well-being and that's the most crucial factor in appointing the new mod(s).

Best of luck!

In 2015 there was an election for the leadership of the Labour Party, a political party in the UK. A few MPs nominated Jeremy Corbyn, not because they wanted him to win, but to widen the debate. To lots of people's surprise he proved extremely popular amongst the Labour Party membership and won the leadership contest by a landslide. It's important to nominate people who might not win, but allow people to find a candidate that they identify with and agree with.

About the threshold, what if it was left at 3, but the mod team culled off everyone who they wouldn't be ok with becoming a mod? Certainly the cull needs to happen before the actual election, otherwise people will end up wasting votes on candidates who have no chance of becoming a mod either way.

As bad as this sounds it might depend on how many we have in the end. Cause if there's only a couple with 4 or less that's fine but if we end up with a list of a dozen that could be an issue.

It'll go back to my idea then, if they don't have serious ideas in the second round, they're gonna get wiped out.

Just being "nice member who gets along" won't be enough to carry you through that place

This thread is updating so far. I think there were 4 new posts while I replied one xD

So apologizes if what I post is outdated by the time I actually post it.... I'll try to correct that as I go.

I feel like we need to stream line the list a fair bit. Be it the three I originally brought up or a higher one. Having Krow in serious contention because of a meme seems silly. Having a higher threshold is better since it better zeros in on the most supported candidates, but my earlier comment does create issues with that.

3) Move it up to a higher amount and leave the thread open for an extra 24 hours?

I like option 3. 24 hours is better IMO.

Maybe by then 3 votes might be a low threshold to pass, but from what I see, it looks like the list has 3 tiers regardless of specific numbers. The 4 or so top candidates, the ones that right now have a single mention, and then another patch that's midway.

Another option is defining a number of candidates to handle, and make the cut based on top numbers, as to make sure you don't end up with too many or too few no matter what.
Not that I'm pushing for this specifically, I'm just trying to come up with ideas to throw up into the table.

Move it higher, close it at midnight.

With preferential voting, as I linked earlier, and sleepy posted the video explaining, we could decide between several members with only one vote. One vote, centralizing it all, with every vote counting.

I absolutely agree that, before the vote happens, candidates should be given a space to say why they think they should be promoted, so that everyone can be as informed as possible.

Going through too many steps to make all this happen is only going to wear down the candidates, current team, and even the member base.

I would also like to retract my vote from Krow. While at the time I thought it was hilarious, I did not mean to complicate things in the slightest.

(Sorry buddy xD)

You were memeing and it is an enjoyable meme. But yea, this is serious, so if you don't seriously think someone is a good pick for a moderator you shouldn't support them.

Anyway, given what others have said and my own vote, I'm going to leave this open for the extra 24 hours. I don't want the cut off to be 3 votes, and to make up for my screw up I'll give the thread the extra time to make sure everyone who wants to have their voice heard have has been able to make their peace.

THREAD CLOSES IN 28.5 HOURS

Question.

Did you happen to take into account the votes that Fuse put in on this page, Black? I looked through and wasn't sure if you did or not. Might've overlooked them, but better to ask than to just assume.

Yes, I did. Please ctrl + f fusion to see his votes listed.

However, I forgot to add his vote for you. This will be remedied.
