Border Wall Prototypes Are So Effective Even US Commandos Can't Best Them

Recent assaults by tactical teams on prototypes of President Donald Trump's proposed wall with Mexico indicate their imposing heights should stop border crossers, a U.S. official with direct knowledge of the rigorous assessment told The Associated Press.

Military special forces based in Florida and U.S. Customs and Border Protection special units spent three weeks trying to breach and scale the eight models in San Diego, using jackhammers, saws, torches and other tools and climbing devices, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the information was not authorized for public release.

"A proposal by Customs and Border Protection calls for spending $18 billion over 10 years to extend barriers to cover nearly half the border, though it is unclear if Trump supports that plan."

I can only hope that he does not because holy crap that's a lot of money and time on something that might not even solve the entire issue.

Also it's funny to think that he can get this started and it won't be done before he's no longer president.

If Marines can't breach it...it's pretty good

also 16 Billion is NOTHING relative to what our gov spends

Yeah I'm not a fan of maybes and temporary.  Either it works or you need to find another solution.  I thought we weren't going to have to pay for this?

You won't have to realistically due to remittance money flow to Mexico that we can cut off

1. Can't be breached directly but its not the only way people come over

2. Its a lot for something that doesn't do much for most people

3. This could easily funk up relationships with a lot of countries if we do something like this

So we can spend 16 billion on a wall but veterans are homeless and we have an opioid crisis.  I mean okay, but what about the problems not stemming from Mexico?  That's money that could be spent on healthcare or rebuilding education from the ground up.

Israel built a wall and their illegal migration problem vanished

Screw them, others shouldn't be telling us how to run this country. POTUS ran on this issue, and was elected. He better not cave

Do you realize how awful for those people having an influx of low skilled workers is?

Low skilled workers harm us

Not sure other countries have a right to invade our sovereignty

They’re not “invading”, White. Some people are just trying to escape violence. We should be accepting them with open arms, not spending all this time and money trying to shut them out. And immigrants aren’t always low-skilled workers and don’t necessarily harm the economy.

I agree with Lord CowCow; at this point we can’t afford to make other countries mad at us (even more than they already are). Everyone’s got nukes now, if WWIII starts we may not even be here to end it.

Anyway, “our sovereignty”? What do you mean by that, exactly? That America can do what it wants ‘cause ‘MURICA?

This belongs in Debates, it didn’t take long to devolve into an immigration debate.

So, these same lazy immigrants who contribute nothing to our society are stealing our jobs?

Pick one.

the money they get from those jobs is often under the table, meaning it does not go to taxes, in addition, much of that money also goes back to mexico, where it is of no use to american citizens who could have been earning it. since there's an influx of low skill, the market floods, and if you've ever shopped, you know, you get what you can, for the lowest price possible, so not only are americans being pushed out of jobs by folks who came over illegally, the money said illegals get, is both untaxed, and sent over to mexico. it's not a lot on a case by case, but when each case is cutting off 1 rightful citizen as well, those cases stack pretty fast. and that's not even getting into what can happen if some illegal immigrants come over, have kids, and proceed to survive off of government assistance. sure, not every illegal imigrant will be like these two scenarios, but i'd bet money more are than aren't.

i will grant that in order to take our wages in the first scenario they have to work though, so it is at least unfair to call them lazy.

See that makes a lil bit of sense.  But what about the rest of us that get paid under the table?  I'm talking about the coke dealers, the meth heads, the people who are dying in the streets and spreading that same problem to a very large part of the country.  I'm all for sensible immigration.  If it works, hooray.  Just let me know when we got the rest of our priorities straight.  Can't talk about your neighbor when your own house is sheet.

indeed. i agree that both are issues that need addressing, but for the sake of fairness, i'm gonna have to say that trump's main pledge was immigration, and as such, it makes sense that it's the first thing he tackles. in addition, i'd argue that it's best to close your doors before cleaning house, that way nobody who'll dirty the floors, or break the vases gets in. properly regulated immigration would do just that also bringing back our troops, but if you saw what happened to ron paul and bernie sanders (by their own parties no less) when they ran on cleaning house, you'd know why that's gonna take a dedicated president to sort out.

It's both useless and a symbol of bigotry and oppression,

i'm gonna have to disagree with that, assuming the wall is completed (or even 70-90% finished), it near-eliminates the aboveground route for illegal immigration into america. now you can argue that underground and under/overwater are additional avenues, but those both have even more fatal flaws than standard above ground immigration

water) above water, you are the essence of a sitting duck, you will have nowhere to run or hide should you get busted, and beyond even that, to effectively break in above water, you need to first find somebody willing to risk their boating career (of any variety, you get busted with illegals on your boat, and you are never living that down, unlike sneaking them in your car, where you can merely hide from the cops and drive like a madman) you also need vast resources to travel underwater, nobody liable to try breaking in illegally is going to be so well off that they can find a person with a submarine. and swimming across the border undetected while a wall blocks your other option would probably qualify you for the Olympics should you make it (especially those with children in tow)

underground) tunnels? laughable. there is a limit to how many, and how fast you can build tunnels, therefore, there will only ever be a few in existence much less active, at a time. unlike aboveground, where you can go where you wish at any given time, a tunnel is a set path, with maybe a few differing branches, find even one branch, and you can shut said tunnel down for good. they are not as reusable or abusable a resource as you might think. and the more tunnels you shut down, the more pressure you place upon the rest of the vessels, and as with all things, the more pressure you put, the more likely that something is to burst. spot one leak, (aka one person emerging from a tunnel), and you don't even need to bust the person, you can wait till they leave, and set up a sting at your own leisure, to bust the next dozen coming through till you choose to collapse the tunnel. of course, that's an optimistic view of tunnel blocking, but but it's nonetheless correct, aboveground gives you the ability to see law enforcement coming, underground? you won't know till you pop your head out if the law has found your hole, to say nothing of the cost of digging.

that about does it for the useless portion (still, that assumes a complete wall) as for the oppressive, that's exactly what's needed. if you wish to come over, do so legally, and if you choose not to do so legally, then do not do so at all. if that slows down overall immigration, then all the more time to fix the inside of the country.

Wall is being built with seismic sensors, so it'll be able to detect tunnels

It's not bigoted to want people to respect your nation's laws

So, these same lazy immigrants who contribute nothing to our society are stealing our jobs?

Pick one.

They are "lazy" due to the high propensity of them with low education. Uneducated is a much better word than lazy. Many don't even know english. They are stealing jobs because given the above, people can hire them for cheap like vla1ne noted

that was something that i wanted to actually ask about, do we have any specifics on what's being used to build this wall? how much tech is going into it, the upkeep cost, and the amount of said wall likely to be built using high tech vs the amount using low tech? it's all well and good that the troops can't break through it, amazing actually, but that doesn't tell me much about how the wall overall is going to look. as you know, we've seen some stuff in the past few months that makes it sound like the wall will be 50% high tech and 50% stone age. do we have exact figures/plans on the proportions yet?

Not entirely sure. The firm that built the wall around Israel is involved I hear

It's apparently some kinda of mix of these 8 protoypes. Some have abrasion surfaces that make it really hard to climb. Others are inclined at painful angles to climb.

I'm on my phone right now so beyond that I don't have much. Upkeep is honestly going to be a problem nobody has addressed yet

you know those images with multiple different new yugioh cards, and half of them on reveal turn out as dissapointments? that's what this reminds me of. aside from that though the actual credentials of the wall materials does sound good so far, and at the very least, there'll be a lot of jobs opening on the border for some time to come.

if i was on trump's crew, i'd have people working on that ASAP. a strong wall only works so long as you can pay for the upkeep. and if i were anybody reporting on him, i'd be hammering that as my main question. it's feasible to build a wall, and it'd have more good than bad effects on immigration, but if he can't think of a few potential ways to keep it pristine, then it's not gonna work out at all.

something else that i remembered though, aside from illegal immigration, a wall would also be a pretty good deterrent to drug/weapons/human trafficking deals that operate across the border. so you could say this is additionally a move that may well clean up america's inside from more than just illegal immigration. drugs only flow where there's money to be made, and if it costs more for traffickers to break out/in than they can earn from the effort, then this wall will damn near pay for itself.

He wanted to mount solar panels on the wall

which would generate an annual revenue would be about $300 million per year...so upkeep
