"Comic book readers are apparently not fans of progressive politics—a fact no more evident in Marvel’s decision to cancel every single one of its comics that has been nominated by the LGBTQ advocacy group, GLAAD. In December, the publisher announced its decision to cancel many of its comics, citing poor sales. LGBTQ, feminist, and social justice-themed comics involving stories that revolved around Black Lives Matter, illegal immigration, and LGBTQ issues were among those to end up on the chopping block"

For the past few years, Marvel has genuinely tried to make more progressive stories. However, last year, David Gabriel - Marvel's VP of Sales - blamed poor sales on diversity, which completely peeved a lot of people, mostly because it seemed like he was looking for a convenient scapegoat rather than looking at other factors, such as bad stories or event fatigue, both factors being especially egregious in Secret Empire.

A lot of these books were pushed for under the supervision of Axel Alonso, the previous Editor-in-Chief, while these books were cancelled following the promotion of the new Editor-in-Chief, C.B. Cebulski.

Marvel is also pretty lousy at promoting these books, and usually the decision to cancel certain books is made before people have the chance to buy them, as Marvel primarily cares about pre-orders put out by retailers. Marvel pays more attention to what the retailers are saying, rather than what the customers themselves are saying, so it's a game of telephone.

Basically, Marvel puts out books that they fail to promote, and usually decide to cancel anyway (Which then begs the question of why they even bother to put these books in the first place...), and then blame the customers.

Since you mention Champions, you might want to know that Jim Zub will be taking over writing duties. https://www.newsarama.com/38270-thunderbolts-alums-take-over-marvel-s-champions-ongoing.html

I'll admit, I'm a bit surprised. I figured it was going to be folded in with Avengers, but Jim Zub is moving from Uncanny Avengers and Avengers: No Surrender to Champions.

Legacy is still going on, and in part seems to be cleaning house for some of the newer characters. Curious if they'll have any new branding after Legacy.

Ms Marvel and Champions are solid comics, the former having proved to be a huge breath of fresh air. I hope Totally Awesome Hulk sticks around too when Bruce Banner comes back (that's not a spoiler, they all do), I prefer it way more than the original Hulk comics (aside from the lame planet hulk rehash right now). Miles Morales/Spider-Man has been mostly great ever since 2011, I own every issue of his.

Iceman felt kinda awkward at times with forced friction and stuff, but I liked what it was trying to do and it got me more invested in Bobby, so I'm a little sad that's going.

Yeah, that Marvel exec shouldn't have put it that way. Marvel has written great comics surrounding a "diverse" character, it's a matter of following up with good writing and art.

It sucks because it should totally be possible to write some solid stories with a diverse range of characters.

The reason a lot of these comics aren't good is the same reason Christian Films suck.  I know weird comparison, stay with me.

I don't know if anyone is familiar with the God's Not Dead franchise, but it's a perfect example.  They're not even made to be good films.  They're just fanservicey propaganda pieces, which the creators (and in this case audiences) arrogantly assume are automatically good and above criticism because they reinforce those ideals and worldviews.

With a lot of these comics, people are writing them just to push an agenda, and then back filling the actual content with whatever supports that, instead of just writing a damn good story and letting your beliefs and ideals bleed into it.

It's okay to have these values be present in stories, hell, even be the focus, but don't let the opinion be the story.

edit: i know i'm late but no lock pls

Ahh, the pruh gressive franchise. The bane of people everywhere. Meanwhile Steven Universe is staying good in quality, proving that the scenario you suggested can be pulled off.

I'm more into the MCU than the comics, but I can recognize the symptoms of Ideals Tumors immediately. I've heard Black Panther is good, though, and I'm planning to watch it, suggesting that maybe these comics weren't so much pruh gressive and were just plain old badly written.
