Pchi
Hi, it's been a while since the last time I posted something here in the forums. Lately, I've had a lot of free time and little to do, so I decided to finally come back here to post some custom cards. Unfortunately, lack of practice left my card making skills rusty, so this set is probably not well-designed, but I'm sure with some tips from my fellow card makers will help me return to form... hopefully. So here they are, a YGO archetype based on characters from their rival franchise, but who I always thought would fit surprisingly well as Duel Monsters cards: [spoiler=Nihilego] UB: Symbiont DARK/Rock/Level 4/ATK 1500/DEF 2000If "Ultra Space" is in your Field Zone: You can Special Summon this card (from your hand), but you cannot Special Summon "UB" monsters from your hand for the rest of the turn. When this card destroys an opponent's monster by battle: It gains 500 ATK. You can only use 1 of the following effects of "UB: Symbiont" per turn, and only once that turn.● If this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can add 1 "Ultra Wormhole" from your Deck or GY to your hand.● You can send 1 other "UB" monster you control or from your hand to the GY, then target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; equip this card to that target. Take control of it. [spoiler=Buzzwole and Pheromosa] UB: Absorption EARTH/Insect/Level 5/ATK 2200/DEF 2200If "Ultra Space" is in your Field Zone: You can Special Summon this card (from your hand), but you cannot Special Summon "UB" monsters from your hand for the rest of the turn. You can only use 1 of the following effects of "UB: Absorption" per turn, and only once that turn.● If this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can add 1 "Ultra Wormhole" from your Deck or GY to your hand.● (Quick Effect): You can send 1 other "UB" monster you control or from your hand to the GY, then target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; its ATK becomes half its current ATK, and if it does, this card gains that lost ATK. UB: Beauty EARTH/Insect/Level 5/ATK 2600/DEF 500If "Ultra Space" is in your Field Zone: You can Special Summon this card (from your hand), but you cannot Special Summon "UB" monsters from your hand for the rest of the turn. Dova
The first thing to come to mind, other than this set's decent OCG, is how weak it first appears. When I first wrote this sentence, it had "how weak it is", but after reviewing potential combos...perhaps it's not so bad after all. The only problem that remains, really, is its dependence on its Field Spell. It's not that they don't have a decent amount of ways to search it: Ultra Wormhole can, after all, and you do have your Level 4 and Level 1 to search out that card after all. The best part is that the monsters basically then can search any monster or the Field Spell from your Deck, and the monsters apt choice between you getting your search or getting their powerful effect, combined with the simplicity of Wormhole, results in a very versatile and fun archetype. Unfortunately, the Field Spell doesn't have any protection, and your only means of recycling it is Wormhole. This might not be much of a problem, as it's very hard to brick when virtually all of your monsters can be searchers. This might not be a problem in and of itself, but your monsters are rather restrictive. Not only does every card in this set have HOPT or SHOPT, but if you Summon a monster from the hand, then cards like Adhesive are dead unless you want its search. It's a bit annoying, although I can understand why you want only one of these Ultra Beasts, considering lore. I'm not sure if Wormhole was meant to have "You can only use 1 effect", because right now its HOPT clause is quite redundant, but if it is...remove it. Its slow enough as it is. Really, I'm nitpicking. There's nothing particularly weak here, and nothing overwhelmingly strong. Its interesting, but it doesn't go overboard with mechanics. If I had to choose, I would still put it on the weak slide, as a Strike and well placed MST or something similar really kills the archetype; if you don't open the field Spell, and your opponent prevents your search or pops it on activation, you can't really do anything. Even after that, it doesn't really have speed, but as I said before: volatile, yet versatile. I'm pleasantly surprised, and I've never played anything passed Gen 1. Thanks for the feedback, Dova, I'm pondering on which changes I could implement to improve the set without making it broken. But seeing as the main weakness you cited was the overreliance on the field, I'd like you to take a look at the other cards I'm going to post today to see if they can fix that first. Also updated the OP with new cards and some changes to "Ultra Space", as well as a minor fix on Xurkitree.Note: couldn't upload some images, so some of the new cards will remain without a picture, sorry.
