Yugioh Highlander Format

Recommended Posts

60 card Main Deck, all cards in your Main, Extra and Side (if using it) must be different.

Anyone here played it? I've been testing a Highlander roid deck on Dueling Nexus, and its pretty fun. Was using the TCG banlist although the OCG or a custom banlist could work. I'm going to see if any of my friends from locals would be interested in it. Not as a replacement to normal Yugioh, but just to try it out.

I like it because it gives me a reason to play Gyroid, Ambulanceroid other cards I don't play in my usual deck.

Several cards, for example Destiny HERO Malicious, are completely useless. Many archetypes no longer have enough members to be played pure, and the ones that do have to make use of cards they wouldn't normally play.

I have played around with this idea and although it sounds like it can be broken easily it's a nice change of pace

If you want to be REALLY casual, you could say 1 Extra Deck monster that acts as the commander of the Deck rather than a whole extra deck.

Things that come to mind include Lightsworns (although 1 of each name sucks), BA, and decks that rely on Pot of Desires.

Also, would the forbidden list be adjusted since some things cannot be as easily broken, and because consistency may be needed just as it is in Magic (Pot of Greed, Graceful Charity, Stratos, Magical Scientist, Cyber Stein, Morphing Jar, Card Destruction, Chicken Game, Metamorphosis, Painful Choice, Pot of Avarice, etc.)

Assuming the former takes effect, I would be happy to build a deck.

I think the dominant playstyle of this format would revolve around "goodstuffs," which entails that low-risk high-reward cards on an individual basis would be favored alongside/instead of archetypes. Cards like Tour Guide from the Underworld and Rescue Rabbit (lol) would allow for plays that couldn't be made as easily with Decks that are stripped of most of their members. Sangan thus becomes much more valuable since it can search some of the pieces that one of these decks would usually be missing.

Restricting the extra deck is something I've considered, but I'm not sure. With 15 slots I expect the best highlander decks would just be various generic Xyz or Link makers, but that's most decks are nowadays anyway. I wouldn't mind trying it out at 10 or 5.

I think that a Commander/Deck Masters format would work better with a Main Deck monster as the Deck Master to go along with your extra deck. You would be able to Summon that monster from your 'Command Zone' as if it were in your hand, and if it leaves the field you get to put it back in your 'Command Zone'. A guy at locals had the idea that each time you summon it from there you have to discard a card as a cost for each time you previously summoned it.

I'd be happy with a lot of cards being unbanned but something like Painful Choice would be an absolute no from me as it provides way too much consistency.

I would give Highlander a shot but not sure if I would play with a 60-card format, though. 40 sounds like a reasonable number to me.

And, as mentioned above, most likely the dominating strategies will be decks with strong singles, searchers and/or mini-engines. TGU, Armageddon Knight+Foolish to mill whatever, power cards, etc.

Painful Choice came to mind because you can no longer reveal 3 of one thing and 2 of another, so it would be a good power card if it didn't send to Graveyard (burning abyss, zombies, etc).

Some main deck monsters that could potentially work well as a commander include Shadow Mist for Heroes, Terrortop for quick plays in decks with Speedroid teched in, or more or less anything with a Special Summon effect. If these monsters are not considered to be "Special Summoned," then Tour Guide from the Underworld or Stratos become absolutely amazing.

Big boss monsters would be frowned upon when compared to combo starters because they require setup to summon. Unless summoning conditions are overlooked, I would prefer a monster like Tour Guide being accessible at all times.

needs to be 100 card main deck plus a commander to lead. remove the extra deck 100%. sideboard deck maybe if you want it to be more competitive nature. forbidden should be used but certain combos/interactions need to be researched to prevent broken bs. true edh highlander format.

Man, I've wanted to play highlander for a while, but no one I know wants to try it.  It's definitely interesting, but it requires a completely different mindset in deckbuilding.  Though I'd think individual power cards would be the backbone of a highlander deck, having a particular strategy in mind doesn't seem like something impossible to pull off either.

Some power plays/engines that could be interesting and relatively consistent:

- Invoked (Field Spell is searchable by Terraforming, Metaverse + Destrudo/AFD, which in turn searches Aleister)

- Kaijus (You can run the gamut, and if you want to, you can run the Field Spell to search them + gives you access to a power card in Slumber)

- Timelords (same as above.  Time Maiden has level 1 support + Graveyard support)

- Phantom Knight engine (digs through the Deck.  Has DARK, Warrior + Graveyard support)

EDIT: Fairy Tail - Luna banned in Highlander format?

I disagree. We're talking about Yugioh not Magic: the Gathering here. There's no reason to need 100 cards, in Yugioh you don't need a third or whatever of your deck to be Lands. 60 works in Yugioh because that is the imposed deck limit, which makes the format playable on simulators like YGOPro and Duelingbook. As for playing with forbidden cards, I guess you could since it's mostly only casual. But personally I'd prefer it without things like Pot of Greed, Graceful Charity and Painful Choice in the first place.

Well if you want to play, my username is Expressroid on Dueling Nexus and Dueling Book (although Book is very laggy for me)
