(YCM Suggestion) YCM Houses! Mods can give pts to houses and etc.

Recommended Posts

Can YCM have houses? like Gryffindor and etc.? I think that would be a great addition to YCM! Mods can give pts to houses and etc. After a certain amount of time whatever houses have the most points wins. Alliances can form and etc. We need to pitch ideas for names for houses and how many should there be. Please discuss this.

I suggest the following houses:

1. Slifer Red (Alternatively named "Osiris Red")

2. Ra Yellow

3. Obelisk Blue

Seriously, though, I support this idea. Not sure how to implement it, especially with people already having their own personal groups, but it'd be interesting if there could be a "secondary" way of labeling or sorting people.

Considering the CFV clan thing in the past, it's possible but like Roxas mentioned, how are we going to do this in light of members having their own groups? We could just add your house logo on the side.

Or with the new changes, you can have your logo on the side underneath the stars (unless they overrule the setting; idk how that'd work out).

Make there be a house cup or something. And member groups can function like unions and band together. Like slifer Red can be an alliance between Night's Watch and Debator

etc

Alliances can be broken, reformed, etc

It'd be super cool

I support this idea, but I suggest that we come up with totally different names for the houses based on their favorite forums.

Six houses is a lot.

I'm not opposed to it, but I don't think there are enough active members to warrant six houses (considering active forums).

I'm interested in how this would be displayed too.  Member information is quickly becoming cluttered with avatars, groups, secondary groups, logos, last visit, and so much more.  Where would houses even fit into this?

[spoiler=well]

as far as houses go, there's a few ways i think you could do this easily, which i'll break down:

1) slifer ra and obelisk would be pretty cool, but they don't give us much in the way of variation. while arguably the easiest to implement, that ease of use also comes with the question of 'how exactly to implement it in a reasonable way?' while calling this system a member group would work, it wouldn't do much as a whole without a poll involving most of the people on this site, as most people on this site tend i believe would to gravitate towards one or two, leaving the third barren. my suggestion to this method of implementation would be to do it the same way that we do the current level system aka; Slifer Red 999 or fewer posts - Obelisk blue 1000 to 9999 posts - Ra Gold, 10,000 or more posts. this way you can have all three implemented in a way that directly correlates to the Egyptian god heirarchy of the anime. and if i were to go one step further, i would suggest adding Horakhty as a distinct color for active mods. possibly pearl white or some such color.

2) Ritual, Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, Pendulum, Link, is the one that i think the most people could get behind, but i don't think it would work as well as the above could, simply because it would be too much variation overall. something simple and not too varied, like red blue yellow would be the best method imo, but this would have the advantage of potential, leading to more distinct groups. i think it could be good, but i also doubt that it would actually be.

3) as for archetypes, or attributes, or types, none of these would work imo. for the same reason that i doubt the above, amplified by 20. there's too much variation, and while variation in massive groups can work, YCM really isn't that large of a group overall, attributes has a shot, but archetypes would need at least half the members of the forum to really work (or even to be worth the effort that would have to be put into it), and types... who the hell's gonna claim reptile and insect set when they could claim the dragon, fairy, spellcaster, warrior, fiend, or even psychic set? it's a waste of slots.

4)with all that said and done, there's actually some interesting ways to make such a trick work without making new member groups. the same spot that's normally reserved for winners of contests (like cardmaker and easter contests) and the like, could be used, instead of member groups, you could work it in that way. not sure how well that would be in practice, but it would be an interesting shot regardless

had more thoughts, but they left while writing these out, what other opinions do you guys have?

Holy sheet please not even more of a caste system based on arbitrary post count.

Literally everyone who was here during the old days and could spam Clubs & Orgs has a way inflated post count.

This entire endeavor is divisive by nature. In a forum where enough people find the atmosphere toxic, that’s the last thing we need.

If I can see a legitimate reason to create these houses in the first place, then I will be open to it; otherwise I will vehemently oppose the further isolation of people by groups and labels.

I'm sure Tormented and/or the mods (if they are willing) would be able to add another factor listed on your profile to be your house, similar to Alias (which is shown next to all your posts as well, a bonus). No need to make it too shiny/encompassing of one's profile, even with a logo, unless we want to rebuild the site around the concept.

Assigning groups by any form of achievement is treading into dangerous ground. Instead of encouraging teaming within your group and beating the other groups in whatever form of challenge is cooked up to emulate a "House Cap", it become a race to the top group, and once you get there...either you chill and move on, or, if it has limited placement, you fight for your own place within the group, getting rid of others so that you don't have to be pushed out to make room.

I also don't agree on dividing people entirely by shared interests. This could also result in the groups becoming self-serving, and potentially break up the unity we do have on the site. It would be best to have the groups as randomized as possible IF the whole point of these groups is just for team participation in certain events. A minimum requirement should be put in place to prevent every new member from being assigned to a group, in order to prevent some from being filled up with people who just use the cardmaker.

The main advantages of having a lot of groups are again lowering the chances of elitism, as the resulting groups will be too small to be able to keep you away from the rest of the site, and allowing aliances to form to make these events more interesting, and AGAIN helping the site be potentially a lot more cohesive. Might sound weird, dividing it into smaller groups to increase unity, but larger groups could more easily try to do their own thing away from the other groups. One disadvantage of this approach is how to actually divide people in this way; if we do it randomly, it could take forever for a new group to have a new member.

An advantage of having, let's say, 4 major groups on the site, is that it encourages teamwork and cohesiveness a lot more within the group instead of within a small group of 5 or 6. But...I have already said enough in regards to the potential disadvantages here, but, even so, I fancy both ideas, for their potential benefits.

I think encouraging teamwork outside of your comfort zone is a good thing for the site, but I will not get behind the idea until we've actually settled on something as a community. Why to actually do this? Well, as mentioned before, for major site events it could become very interesting. I personally like the idea of 6-8 groups, allied under arbitrary YCM exclusive names (potentially come up with by the mods), each with a various arbitrary theme. However, a problem with this is...arbitraryness, for want of a better word. I have no idea whether these random groups will actually get people invested in them, even if I would be. But, I also have no idea how to divide people up by defined values/themes properly.

I guess this is a long way of saying idk what to do, but I like the idea.

well, that was the idea for the red blue yellow suggestion. i don't think that it would cause the same problems that it did in the past. sure there's some people with insanely high post counts, but that's not the same problem that it once was. i get why you wouldn't want to attempt it again though.

that said. the other two ideas were similar to the member groups, with the sole difference of being used like the Easter winner  titles instead of the member group titles.

Okay, just want to clarify something. I was suggesting the GX dorms as a joke, so it wasn't meant as a sincere idea. I just want to make sure if references to those three are merely hypothetical so we have examples to use for the sake of this discussion, rather than proposing serious houses to move forward with.

So would these be displayed where you have the police badge?

If we got the usergroup option and they had images (which I think they would), yes. Otherwise, if I can remember how the CFV flag stuff was done a few years back, then underneath the general stats.

The latter would require manual editing to each member who's in a certain house but no group changes, whereas the former option would need group changing via the ACP.
