This was a card that I've been thinking about for a while now.

Substitoad

Water / Aqua / Level 1

100 attack / 2000 defense

You can Tribute 1 monster to Special Summon 1 "Frog" monster from your Deck, except "Frog the Jam". "Frog" monster except "Frog the Jam", cannot be destroyed by battle.

It's a neat card. A Lonefire Blossom for the frog cards.

Lonefire Blossom

Fire / Plant / Level 3

500 attack / 1400 defense

Once per turn: you can Tribute 1 face-up Plant-Type monster; Special Summon 1 Plant-Type monster from your deck.

Both are really versatile cards for the cards that they can summon. It would be neat to see substitoad come back with a once per turn clause on him, since he would give a massive consistency boost to frogs. I find that a lot of frog hands can be bricky in that they open too many trap cards, or not the right frogs. Having a Lonefire Blossom with them would allow them to more cosistently make rank 2 monsters ( namely Toadally Awesome ) with less bricks.

Would it still be too strong though? All it would need to prevent the looping from back in frog ftk would be to give it a once per turn clause, much like Lonefire Blossom in that even though it's not a hard once per turn, he cannot summon himself, so all you would be doing is tributing himself to summon a frog from your deck, or tributing another monster to summon a frog from your deck.

It's a super simple errata, and there is a Master Book Errata coming up. I'd not be shocked if it and Mind Master eventually get errata'd and unbanned

What is a master book errata? I mean it sounds like there's going to be a new wave of errated banned cards, that I understand but still needed to ask

OCG erratas one card a year for a special rule book separate from the errata waves

Witch of the Black Forest in 2017

Sangan in 2016

Dark Magaician of Chaos in 2015

Dark Strike Fighter in 2014

More errata are possible of course

No.

Frogs already have Ronintoadin for their recycling abilities, and trust me, in Paleo Frogs, this would be a nightmare, since it means you can Tribute Paleos to get out Frogs that are actually useful from the Deck.

actually, you wouldn't be able to

quick example

Paleozoic Canadia

Trap - Normal

Target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; change it to face-down dfense position. Once per chain, when a trap card is activated while this card is in your graveyard: you can special summon this card as a normal monster (aqua/water/level2/atk: 1200/def: 0). (This card is NOT treated as a trap). If summoned this way, THIS CARD IS UNAFFECTED BY MONSTER EFFECTS, also banish it when it leaves the field.

If it's unaffected by monster effects how can it be tributed to activate a monster effect?

I may be wrong, but that just makes no sense to me

It's not being tributed by the effect. It's being tributed as a cost required to activate the effect.

Costs =/= Effects.

Similar things like Level Up with Horus Lv. 6 have been known forever. Despite being unaffected by spells, Level Up can tribute Lv. 6 to Special Summon Lv. 8.

In the end, while that is true, you would be banishing a paleo on the field for a frog from your deck, this would be once per turn ( with errata )

Still, even with an errata, this allows some pretty crazy plays, and I don't think Paleo Frogs need any more power.

true, we are talking about frogs here rather than plants, which aren't nearly as powerful. What kinda combos would he enable though? He is a level one, which is a bit awkward in a rank 2 focused deck

They probs will get more toys if rumours about Frogs getting more support in Cybernetic Horizon is true, though it may or may not be Substitoad level.

Oh yea, I remember hearing about that a long time ago, something like a trade in for frogs if I remember correct

Cards from the Wetlands

Spell - Normal

Discard 1 "Frog" monster: draw 2 cards

The rumour post I saw over the weekend only mentioned themes from the past that are said to be supported in the set.

Thanks to Links, it doesn't matter that he's Level 1. He's perfect fodder for Mistar Boy, and he can Tribute himself for his own effect, upgrading from a Level 1 to a Level 2.

And given how easy Frogs recycle and boost themselves, you can use him to find Frogs easily, which can be one of the problems of the Deck if you brick and can't get any monsters out to Xyz or Link.

as a (former) pure frog player (upgraded to paleo frog), this card being banned, while understandable, hurts me to see. frogs (and by extension toads) would love to have him back, and if a hard OPT errata is all it would take to get him back, i'm all for it. the whole reason he was banned was because his effect wasn't even regular OPT, leading to insane FTK loops with (i believe it was) mass driver.

with a hard OPT, substitoad would be fine coming back at 1 or maybe even 2, lonefire is arguably the exact same monster under those conditions, and while toad would have a different monster pool to work with, he wouldn't be busted under those conditions. sure, paleo frogs don't need that much more power, but substitoad ft. a hard OPT wouldn't really shot them to tier 0 status.

outside of that though, without a hard OPT, this card is just too good. so it will never come back.

wouldn't this year be grandsoil turn? pretty sure he's slated for a hard OPT before the element vassals come out.
