I have an unpopular opinion on this game.

I love SSB, but I'm not too excited for this game for some reason. My period of console gaming has fizzled out at this point, and I honestly don't think it will top my favorite SSB game - the Nintendo 64 original. (It's not just the nostalgia talking.) I just enjoy a game that keeps it fun without adding too much extra things, and I think SSB64 does that best out of the franchise.

I'm curious, what does this game add for brand new features? Smash 4 for Wiiu added 8 player smash. Brawl added my personal favorite, smash balls. What does this edition add?

edit: I didn't read the whole thread because that would take too long

I would say the best takeaways are tilts out of dashes and lag added to rolls are the best changes so far. It pretty much signals that Sakurai is 50/50 on making Smash appealing to casuals and competitors, where he was previously dedicated to casuals without knowing much or being apathetic to what competitors want.

Other than that, we don't have much info on mechanics per se. There's no wavedashing and we can't say about story mode, so we'll have to see.

First off, people have wanted Bayonetta for years. She’s not some random character that got added. She adds a completely different playstyle, she represents a more adult Nintendo (while keeping the charm of regular Nintendo), and Sakurai wanted her in, much like how he wants FE to be heavily represented because it is his favorite franchise (forget the interview, but he did admit to it being his favorite).

Outside of being more adult, what you said can apply for a lot of characters and franchises. Even more when you open up considerations to 3rd party characters.

I am curious where he said it is his favorite franchise, in my googling I couldn't find it. Only this came up which would refute your claim that Sakurai wanted such a large FE presence.

"As for figuring out which Fire Emblem characters to include in each game, Sakurai said that it largely is down to luck and timing of releases, and that picks are usually characters from games that are popular at the time. With a few exceptions, characters are never added after the initial project plan is made, due to the impact it has on production time and costs. If Awakening had been released a few months earlier, there likely would've been fewer Fire Emblem characters in Smash 4."

Sakurai didn't go in wanting Smash 4 to have so many FE characters, the cards just happened to fall in a way that they did.

On top of that, you’re assuming Nintendo lied, but my argument says much the opposite. That WAS the goal... but things changed in a nice, tidy manner.

If Bayonetta was planned ahead of time, then winning the poll is irrelevant. It would mean they were already working on the poll winner before she even won, which means they can put the poll in their back pocket for later. There’s no lie there, just convenience that that two happened to line up. This requires fewer assumptions than “they lied”, especially when they acknowledged that Bayonetta did win the poll with her reveal.

If another had won, they most certainly would have been added... but that isn’t the case, because they didn’t win. Sakurai wanted her in, but it’s not like she was an unpopular pick from the start, so working on her in case she won OR didn’t is fine. It’s not like Corrin was winning any polls, either, but they got added because IS/Nintendo/Sakurai/someone wanted them added.

I actually went looking to see where this is coming from.

Given this two things could have happened

1) Work on Bayo started before they knew anything about the poll. When it was clear she was likely going to be the winner they realized the development time they were putting aside for the winner could be used on what ever character Sakurai would have wanted.

2) Bayo had a very strong lead very early so they started work sooner then expected. This is possible since polls are often top loaded in terms of votes with the majority of votes coming in during the first few days of a poll being up. Since they had a pretty safe bet in Bayo the early start let them work on one final character.

The first case is the more likely one, but I do believe scenario 2 is still within the realm of possibility.

[spoiler=So, Vergeben, well known leaker (the first to report on Snake as well as confirmed Ridley at E3 and no roster cuts), has given some new info.]Disregard ALL people claiming leaks that don't have Simon Belmont and Isabelle.

The "leak" at the beginning of the month more or less had one of those so I'm curious if that will pan out still. It said July will having something and the month isn't over just yet.

On a totally unrelated note I'm super invested in these two characters in particular making it in.

Well, that one has been in leaks since Vergeben's earlier leaks before E3 or earlier, the one where he talked about what I had in parentheses. His source(s) (since you gotta remember most leakers are actually just reporters who get info from others who do the actual leaking) is just doubling down on that one while adding a new one.

  • 2 weeks later...

For the Smash ballot King K was my choice, but when the leak from last month (which is clearly not happening now) had Dixie also I started to dream bigger. DKC is one of my favorite game franchise and it is SO good so it deserves two more reps. Past that I'm cool with most possible additions. What I'm most interested in is the other echo fighters they might end up doing.

Anyway

I had a dream recently where Midna was a playable character in this new Smash. Really wish the dream becomes true. I know she is already an assist, but still, come ooooon.

Is she confirmed to be an assist in this too? Little Mac was one in Brawl so it is possible for an AT to get promoted to full character.

The idea of Midna on wolf Link is cool, but I would prefer if she was on her own. I can already imagine her floating instead of walking or running, maybe levitate-"run" at a similar speed as SM4 Cloud, plus she would have a smaller hitbox.

But since she is already on her own as an Assist Trophy, that adds to the possibility of her being playable while mounting wolf Link. Besides, there is also Hyrule Warriors as precedence.

I think it's safe to say we'll get one, if not, two character reveal trailers in this direct and possibly a new mode along with other things. We've been two months without new info so Nintendo better deliver. I hope that we'll get access to every map released in every game to follow up the theme of this game.

I feel like if it was every map too they would have said so. That said this game will likely have the VAST majority if the selection we saw in trailers and what not is any indication.

While Smash is still it's own thing, given how Let's Go has been a major catalyst to more formally promote Eevee as a secondary mascot for Pokémon alongside Pikachu, I'd wonder if that might extend as far as including Eevee as a playable character here.

EDIT: Never mind, missed that Eevee is still in the PokéBall.

*hears a scream*

Oh no, some woman is in trouble! Save her, character I assume is Simon!

*it's Luigi*

hahahahaha

Dark Samus looked pretty much the same as Samus, but Chrom had moves from both Ike and Marth which is interesting.

The bait with Dedede was funking funny, too. The Rathalos threw me off for a second, too, when I saw the stage I thought we were getting a Monster Hunter playable character. This could lead to that, though...

RIP Shovel Knight and Ashley, though.

Still no playable Midna T.T

Sucks for Shovel Knight fans, too.

Got a bit annoyed at K.Rool displaying super armor moves. That's what Bowser needs the most IMO, like Poject M did for him.

So that's why Chrom had avoided any cameos until now, he will be playable as some people already theorized.
