Feeri (ふぇーり) went 6-0-1 and finished 1st in “Nishi-Shinjuku CS” (Team 3v3) which had 42 teams (126 participants).

He is running the full 3 Effect Veiler in the Main Deck, and having Infinite Transience only in the Side Deck.

Effect Veiler is seeing increasingly more play in the Main Deck when compared with Infinite Transience.

Effect Veiler being a Tuner, can be used with Sentou Mecha Hornet Bit to Link Summon Crystron Needlefiber.

Infinite Transience performs poorly against ABC. Set Rotation prevents Infinite Transience from being played from hand.

Having Shared Ride in the Side Deck against Sentouki is also seeing increasing play. Shared Ride allows the player to keep up with the card advantage generated from the opponent’s Sentou Start-Up Engage.

OCG2018041_SentoukiABC.jpg

Eatos (エアトス) and Chari (ちゃり) ran the exact same 73 cards and together they dominated the “67th Aichi CS in NextPro Osu Shop with Hatti CS” which had 55 participants. Eatos went 8-0 and finished 1st, while Chari went 6-2 and finished 2nd .

For their Sentouki ABC build, in addition to the 3 Effect Veiler in the Main Deck, there is also a Torque Tune Gear. Torque Tune Gear being a LIGHT Machine-Type Union Tuner monster, is searchable by Union Hangar.

Trickstar Light Stage is the secondary Field Spell card chosen to support Set Rotation. Trickstar Light Stage can search for Trickstar Carobein, and also seal an opponent’s set Spell/Trap until the End Phase.

This deck is heavily optimized to Link Summon Cystron Needlefiber, having multiple methods to open with a Special Summoned monster and a Tuner.

OCG2018041_PerformapalMagician.jpg

Kidd (キッド) went 6-2 and finished 2nd in “8th Ishikawa CS” which had 36 participants.

He teched 3 copies of Secret Village of the Spellcasters in the Side Deck against Sentouki.

Secret Village of the Spellcasters prevents the opponent from activating Spell Cards, but it is not an outright win. Secret Village of the Spellcasters is still vulnerable to Evenly Matched and Typhoon.

OCG2018041_MetalfoesZefra.jpg

Metalfoes Zefra is the current popular Zefra build.

With just Zeraath and Metalfoes Goldriver or Metalfoes Silverd, Metalfoes Zefra can bring out Cystron Needlefiber, PSY-Framelord Omega and either Denglong, First of the Yang Zing or Zefraniu, Secret of the Yang Zing, with a supporting Nine Pillars of Yang Zing, and drawing 2 cards in the whole process.

Compared to the mono variant which uses Dragon Shrine, Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm and Destrudo the Lost Dragon’s Frisson, the Metalfoes variant has a much higher consistency. The requirement of a Pendulum Scale 1 Metalfoes Monster is easily achieved with 3 Metalfoes Goldriver, 3 Metalfoes Silverd and 2 Painful Decision in the deck. Zefraath can be played in 3 copies, and is also searchable by Oracle of Zefra and Zefra Providence.

ATM went 7-0 and finished 1st in “8th Ishikawa CS” which had 36 participants

Damn, and I was looking forward to jumping back into the game with Lair Infernoids but seems they have been pushed out of the top tiers already. Still, they may have a chance at TCG where the Lair cards will be released soon.

Shared Ride vs. Sentoukis, huh? Meta calls are incoming already.

I found amusing how Set Rotation can stop Transience, and that Veiler still has an edge because of that and being a Tuner for combos with Needlefiber/Summon Sorceress.

I see that only Zefras played PSY-Frame Gamma, and I saw it suggested for Lair Infernoids as well. I don't fully understand yet which is the deck criteria for running Gammas over, let's say, Designator from Grave, or both, since Gamma becomes dead while you control a monster.

OCG2018042_Altergeist.jpg

A change in the trap line-up has allowed Altergeist to compete against top contenders in the current competitive scene.

As the metagame shifts to more Spell-heavy format, Altergeist has begun reducing Altergeist Protocol from 3 to 2, and Altergeist Manifestation from 2 to 1, to make space for Anti-Spell Fragrance. Not only is Anti-Spell Fragrance great against Sentouki and decks running Sentouki engine, it also strong against the Pendulum decks, Zefra and Magician.

Running the full 3 copies of Ghost Reaper & Winter Cherries also ensures that they are able to consistently deny the opponent of their Sentouki Kagari, Crystron Needlefiber or Heavymetalfoes Electrumite. Banishing these Link Monsters is sufficient to cripple most of the current popular decks.

GenGen went 6-1-1 and finished 1st in “38th Adachi CS with Hatti CS” (Team 3v3).

OCG2018042_MetalfoesZefra.jpg

Kura (くら) went 7-2 and finished 3rd in “68th Aichi CS in NextPro Osu Shop with Hatti CS” which had 52 participants.

He is running the Mare Mare package consisting of 2 Armageddon Knight, 1 Destrudo the Lost Dragon’s Frisson, 1 Mare Mare and 1 Yazi, Evil of the Yang Zingin the Side Deck.

The Metalfoes Zefra build is relatively weaker against Anti-Spell Fragrance, hence having additional outs in the form of Yazi, Evil of the Yang Zing is beneficial. Yazi also follows up into Mare Mare, generating massive advantage to clear the opponent’s board and opening up for an One-Turn-Kill.

OCG2018042_SentoukiABC.jpg

Fumi (ふみ) went 8-0 to finished 3rd in “38th Adachi CS with Hatti CS” (Team 3v3), and went 7-1 to finished 1st in “37th Oretachi Trading Card Division CS” which had 40 participants. That brings his overall record to an astonishing 15-1.

This is the current standard build. Some minor variations seen are a second copy of Glow-Up Bulb, a second copy of Trickstar Light Stage, and Sentouki Shizuku in the Extra Deck.

OCG2018042_Sentouki.jpg

Osee (おせぇ) went 8-1 and finished 1st in “5th Zakuo Cup” which had 61 participants.

He has chosen to max out on Sentou Airspace Area Zero in order to run Set Rotation, which is quite useful against ABC and Zefra.

Set Rotation is used to give the opponent Sentou Airspace Area Zero and yourself SPYRAL Resort. SPYRAL Resort will then fetch for SPYRAL Super Agent whose effect can be activated to Special Summon itself and destroy Sentou Airspace Area Zero, if you called correctly. When Sentou Airspace Area Zero is destroyed and sent to the graveyard, its effect would then Special Summon Sentouki Rei.

From there, Sentouki Rei and a Tuner monster can Link Summon Crystron Needlefiber, whose effect will then Special Summon Glow-Up Bulb. Glow-Up Bulb and SPYRAL Super Agent can finally be used to Synchro Summon Naturia Beast.

Cybernetic Horizon gave Sentouki another new Link Monster – Sentouki Hayate.

Sentouki Hayate greatly improves the consistency of Sentouki decks. By activating Hayate’s effect to send Sentou Start-Up Engage from deck to graveyard, it can be retrieved later by Link Summoning Sentouki Kagari in the Main Phase 2. Alternatively if you opened with Sentou Mecha Hornet Bit, then Hayate’s effect can also be used for sending Sentouki Rei to the graveyard, setting up for Rei to recur when a Sentouki Link Monster is destroyed by battle, or leaves the field because of an opponent’s card effect.

Minato (みなと) went 7-2 and finished 2nd in “2nd Yu CS” which had 80 participants.

He ran 3 Mind Control in the the Side Deck for the mirror match. Mind Control allows him to take control of the opponent’s Sentouki monster and used it to Link Summon his own Sentouki Link Monster.

OCG2018043_Sentouki.jpg

Inakingu (いなきんぐ) went 8-0 and finished 1st in “2nd Yu CS” which had 80 participants.

He played Naturia Beast in his Extra Deck, which can be Synchro Summoned using Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer and Glow-Up Bulb. Naturia Beast was able to win every game against Sentouki.

OCG2018043_PerformapalSupremeKingMagicia

Sakuma (さくま) went 7-0 and finished 1 – 2nd in “69th Aichi CS with Hatti CS” (Team 3v3) which had 44 teams (132 participants).

Sakuma was using almost the same build last week. He went 7-0 and finished 1st in “68th Aichi CS in NextPro Osu Shop with Hatti CS” which had 52 participants.

The only changes were switching out 2 Typhoon for 2 Cosmic Cyclone in his Side Deck. This is an adaptive change to combat Anti-Spell Fragrance and Imperial Order that are very popular in Altergeist decks.

OCG2018043_SentoukiABC.jpg

Kiiko (きーこ) went 6-2 and finished 1 – 2nd in “69th Aichi CS with Hatti CS” (Team 3v3) which had 44 teams (132 participants).
OCG2018043_MetalfoesZefra.jpg

OCG201804-3.jpg

Cybernetic Horizon had very minimal initial impact on the competitive scene. The only boost was to Sentouki in the form of Sentouki Hayate.

Sentouki, Magician, ABC, Zefra, and Altergeist are expected to be the popular decks for the two upcoming major OCG tournaments – Duel City Championship 2017 (29, 30 April 2018) and YOT Thailand 2018 (5, 6 May 2018).
Although the standard Metalfoes Zefra combo only requires running 1 Astrograph Sorcerer, he ran the full 3 copies of Astrograph Sorcerer along with 1 Stargazer Magician. This allows him to run Eradicator Epidemic Virus in the Side Deck against Sentouki.

Naturia Beast MVP in Magicians vs. Sentoukis, playing Astrograph Sorcerer as Tribute for EEV, Imperial Order in Altergeists, the Spell hate got serious.

Is it time for Spell Canceller to shine again? :v

What happened to Secret Village in Magicians? Was it too vulnerable to Set Rotation maybe?

Yakei (ヤケイ) went 7-1-1 and finished 1st in “Toycomp Umeda CS with Hatti CS” which had 59 participants.

He ran Retaliating “C” in his Side Deck. Retaliating “C” is currently trending as a popular tech against ABC.

When Retaliating “C” is Special Summoned by its own effect, all cards that goes to the graveyard are banished instead. This stops the effect of A-Assault Core, B-Buster Drake, C-Crush Wyvern, as well as Mecha Phantom Beast O-Lion, Dandylion, Glow-Up Bulb.

The Special Summoning condition is easily met when the opponent activates Sentou Mecha Hornet Bit, Shaddoll Fusion, Monster Reborn or Soul Charge. Since Retaliating “C”‘s effect Special Summons itself onto the field, it plays around Called by the Grave.

Even if the opponent was able to clear Retaliating “C”, its Trigger Effect would then add Maxx “C” from deck to hand, making it hard for the opponent to make any plays without giving up too much card advantage.

OCG2018044_PerformapalMagician.jpg

peace went 8-1 and finished 1st in “69th Aichi CS in NextPro Osu Shop with Hatti CS” which had 54 participants.

He ran a copy of Performapal Bubblebowwow in the Main Deck. Performapal Bubblebowwow is mainly played for its Pendulum Effect to protect Naturia Beast from Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit.

This is a very convenient synergy as Performapal Bubblebowwow can be searched by Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer, which is part of the requirement to Synchro Summon Naturia Beast.

OCG2018044_SentoukiABC.jpg

GT (じーてぃー) went 7-1 and finished 2nd in “6th Yu-Ky CS” (Team 3v3) which had 36 Teams (108 participants).

Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion has been frequently played by ABC in the Side Deck.

Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion is mainly used to negate Called by the Grave as ABC heavily relies on their graveyard effect. Sentouki Kagari and Firewall Dragon are also some popular Link Monsters that could be negated by Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion.

Against Sentouki, Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion is also useful for negating Sentou Mecha Shark Cannon.

OCG201804-4.jpg

Sentouki Hayate has made Sentouki one of the most consistent deck currently. This is reflected in its popularity and performance as it pulls ahead of the pack.

Magician, ABC and Zefra are still putting out consistent results.

Shino (しの) had a great run over the weekend with his unique Sentouki build.

On Saturday he went 6-0 to finished 3 – 4th in “5th Quality Cup” (Team 2v2) which had 29 teams (58 participants). On Sunday he went 6-0-2 to finished 1 – 2nd in “Itabashi CS” (Team 3v3). And on Tuesday he went 5-2 to finished 3 – 4th in “40th Oretachi Trading Card Division CS” which had 52 participants.

His build runs 3 Sentou Airspace Area Zero, 2 Sentou Mechanism Multi-Roll, 3 Mystical Space Typhoon and 2 Twin Twisters in the Main Deck.

Sentou Airspace Area Zero and Sentou Mechanism Multi-Roll are useful for destroying Knightmare Corruptor Iblee that was Special Summoned
by the opponent, while Mystical Space Typhoon and Twin Twisters improves his chances against Anti-Spell Fragrance and Imperial Order.

Destroying his own Sentou Airspace Area Zero with Mystical Space Typhoon is also a possible play to Special Summon Sentouki Rei.

Duel City 2017 is a year-long tournament series held across various cities in China that culminates into the Duel City Championship 2017. Invitations to the Duel City Championship 2017 are awarded only to the champion of each Duel City 2017 tournament, making this a battle of champions.

Duel City Championship 2017 had 31 participants with the following metagame breakdown:

Overall
8 Sentouki
7 Altergeist
4 Performapal Magician
3 Metalfoes Zefra
2 Sentouki ABC
2 Sentouki Gouki
2 Sentouki SPYRAL
1 Meta Beat
1 Shiranui
1 Zombie FTK

Top 8
3 Altergeist
2 Sentouki
2 Sentouki SPYRAL
1 Performapal Magician

Tonybear earned his invitation in the morning when he won one of the last chance qualifiers, Duel City 2017 SP5. He carried his momentum from his SP5 victory into the afternoon and went 6-0-1 to finish as the grand champion of the Duel City Championship 2017.

He ran an old school build that is lacking of Glow-Up Bulb and Naturia Beast, a currently trending tech against Sentouki.

His read on the popularity of Altergeist for this tournament was spot on and he came well prepared with 3 Denko Sekka in the Side Deck.

OCG2018045_PerformapalMagician.jpg

Happy (ハッピー) went 6-3 and finished 2nd in “6th Garosu CS with Hatti CS” (Team 2v2) which had 50 teams (100 participants).
He ran Borrelsword Dragon instead of Borreload Dragon in the Extra Deck, a new trend among ABC players.

This is a new strategy to set up an Extra Link using Borrelsword Dragon, Knightmare Mermaid, Knightmare Goblin, Knightmare Phoenix and Knightmare Unicorn all co-linked together, with a ABC-Buster Dragon, while giving the opponent Knightmare Corruptor Iblee.

This setup is made to lockdown Sentouki. Knightmare Corruptor Iblee in the opponent’s Main Monster Zone prevents the opponent from playing most of their Sentou Spell Cards. The Extra Link locks out both Extra Monster Zone, disallowing the opponent from using Iblee for a Link Summon. Finally, if the opponent attempts to suicide Iblee by attacking with it, Borrelsword Dragon would turn Iblee to Defense Position and stop the attack.

Their only out to this is to destroy Iblee with Sentou Airspace Area Zero or Sentou Mechanism Multi-Roll, both of which could be stopped by ABC-Buster Dragon.

PSY-Framegear Gamma is run in the Side Deck to counter Retaliating “C”.

This weekend was the start of the Golden Week in Japan, and the holiday saw a huge increase in tournaments and turnouts. Meanwhile, China had the grand conclusion of their Duel City Championship 2017.

Together we have hundred of top-placing deck lists across several tournaments, giving us a fairly accurate depiction of the current OCG 2018.04 competitive scene.

The Golden Week continues into Week #6 and we can expect more tournaments on Thursday to Sunday in Japan.

YOT Thailand 2018 will also be happening in the upcoming weekend and you will be able to follow the tournament on Yu-Gi-Oh! Events or Beyond the Duel.

OCG 2018.04 Metagame Report #6 is expected to be delayed as I will be traveling to YOT Thailand 2018.

@ if you're serious, you can pretty easily get a battle tested meta-deck

Week #6 of the OCG 2018.04 format.

Golden Week in Japan and YOT Thailand 2018 in Asia.

This report will cover 152 top-performing decks from 21 tournaments that were held in Japan and Thailand during 3 – 6 May 2018.

The largest tournament of the weekend was YOT Thailand 2018.

Cheung Wing Ho from Hong Kong came out victorious in the tournament with his Sentouki deck, finishing with an impressive 13-1 (with no byes).

He is running a relatively old school build, using Upstart Goblin and Foolish Burial Goods for Metalfoes Fusion to fill up the graveyard with Spells while drawing into the key components.

He is also using Jet Synchron for the OTK combo using Crystron Needlefiber and Summon Sorceress to bring out Hi-Speedroid Chanbara.

OCG2018046_SentoukiA.jpg

Shiota (しおた) went 8-0 to finished 1st in “72nd Aichi CS in 193 Osu Shop with Hatti CS” on Friday, and then went 6-0-1 to finished 1st in “74th Aichi CS with Hatti CS” (Team 3v3) on Sunday.

He is running the latest trending build of using Sentou Airspace Area Zero with Mystical Space Typhoon and Twin Twisters. This build has a higher consistency of getting Sentouki Rei to start generating card advantage earlier.

The other new trend is that players are now going for Glow-Up Bulb instead. This is also an OTK, but uses Crystron Needlefiber to go into Borrelsword Dragon. The condition for setting up the OTK is much more stricter as it requires the opponent to have a monster with ATK 1500 or higher so that Sentouki Hayate could suicide into it to send and then trigger Sentouki Rei. However, the cost for reviving Glow-Up Bulb is much cheaper and frees up a space in the Extra Deck as Summon Sorceress is no longer required.

 OCG2018046_SentoukiB.jpg

Kaito (かいと) went 7-0-1 to finished 1 – 2nd in “Toycomp CS with Hatti CS” (Team 3v3) which has 58 teams (174 participants).

In the Extra Deck, he ran Apprentice Witchling instead of LANpholinkus.

The purpose of LANpholinkus was to provide two Link Arrows for Pendulum Summoning from the Extra Deck in the scenario that the opponent had banished Heavymetalfoes Electrumite using Ghost Reaper & Winter Cherries.

Apprentice Witchling fulfills the same purpose, but also provides an ATK boosts to DARK monsters, which covers a majority of the Magician and Sorcerer monsters.

But more importantly, Apprentice Witchling is a Spellcaster monster. By using 2 DARK Spellcaster Pendulum Monsters to Link Summon Apprentice Witchling, the two Spellcaster Pendulum Monsters can tend by Pendulum Summon back onto the field at the Link Arrows. Apprentice Witchling and one of the Spellcaster Pendulum Monsters will be used to Link Summon Summon Sorceress, whose effect can target the remaining Spellcaster Pendulum Monster on the field, and Special Summon a Spellcaster monster from the deck.

Apprentice Witchling opens up the option of going into Summon Sorceress, and thus developing into a stronger board.

OCG2018046_PerformapalMagician.jpg

While Sentouki ABC still remains popular, the new variant Greener HERO ABC FTK had a good run this week.

Hina (ヒナ) went 5-2 to finished 1st in “7th Gama CS” (Team 3v3) which had 32 teams (96 participants) on Saturday, and finished 3rd in “12th JGP Miyagi with Hatti CS” on Sunday.

Greener HERO ABC FTK main winning condition is using Cannon Soldier to tribute A-Assault Core while Firewall Dragon is on the field. A-Assault Core would then retrieve the other copy of A-Assault Core, which would then be Special Summoned by Firewall Dragon‘s effect. This loop could be continued until the opponent’s Life Points is depleted by Cannon Soldier.

The deck also has a easier time going second with the Armageddon Knight sending Destrudo the Lost Dragon’s Frisson to Synchro Summon Yazi, Evil of the Yang Zing which would then bring out Mare Mare.

By not running Sentou Mecha Hornet Bit or Shaddoll Fusion, Retaliating “C” cannot be easily Special Summoned against this deck, especially after siding out A Hero Lives.

OCG2018046_GreenerHEROABCFTK.jpg

OCG201804-6.jpg

The conclusion of Golden Week and YOT Thailand 2018 saw Sentouki and Magician remains as the top 2 decks to beat in the current OCG competitive scene.

This marks the start of the World Championship Qualifier (WCQ) season in Japan and Asia.

Japan is now holding their Block Representative Tournaments where only players who had won a Shop Representative Tournament back during February to April were invited. By winning their respective Block Representative Tournament, they will then be able to join the Japan Representative Tournaments (WCQ). Winners of Japan Representative Tournaments will then represent Japan in the World Championship 2018.

Asia will also be running their Asia Championship 2018 Qualifiers, the last chance for players in Asia to earn their invitation to the Asia Championship 2018. Winners of the Asia Championship 2018 will then represent Asia in the World Championship 2018.

The biggest tournament happened over the past weekend was the Asia Championship 2018 Philippines Qualifier which had 150 participants.

Hiroshi Odate (5 – 8th, Asia Championship 2017) went 10-2 to win the Philippines Qualifier and earned his invitation in the Asia Championship 2018.

He played a hybrid variant that runs both Foolish Burial Goods and Sky Striker Airspace – Area Zero.

3 Foolish Burial Goods and 1 Metalfoes Fusion are used to quickly fill the graveyard with Spells in order to hit the 3 Spells quota and provide a simple card draw.

2 Sky Striker Airspace – Area Zero, 1 Terraforming and 2 Twin Twisters are played for additional consistency in bringing out Sky Striker Ace – Raye. Area Zero and Twin Twisters are also useful for sending Metalfoes Fusion to the graveyard in the unfortunate event that it was drawn.

ACQ2018Philippines_1st.jpg

Yang Guang (阳光) went 7-2-1 and finished 2nd in “Duel City 2017 Shanghai” which had 84 participants.

He ran a standard optimized Performapal Magician build.

OCG2018047_PerformapalMagician.jpg

Tsujimura Ryosuke “ひつじ”, the 2017 World Champion, was recently spotted playing the Greener HERO ABC FTK deck.

He went 6-0-1 and finished 1st in “1st Shimokita CS” which had 29 participants.

Rather than just banking only on the FTK, he went for a more balanced build by bringing back Knightmare Gryphon into the Extra Deck, and having the Shaddoll engine in the Side Deck.

OCG2018047_GreenerHEROABCFTK.jpg

Shiratsukusu (しらっくす) went 6-0 and finished 1st in “43rd Oretachi Trading Card Division CS” which had 31 participants.

Sky Striker Malicious Gouki has been gaining popularity as it requires fewer cards to setup an Extra Link lockdown.

The standard 1-card opening is using Armageddon Knight to send Destiny HERO – Malicious, whose effect would Special Summon another Malicious. Armageddon Knight and Malicious are used to Link Summon Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights, which would add a Warrior monster to hand to be used as discard fodder later, and then send Divine Sword – Phoenix Blade to the graveyard to Special Summon Gouki Octostretch.

Isolde and Gouki Octostretch is then used to Link Summon Summon Sorceress, and Octostretch will add another Gouki monster (such as Gouki Suprex). The graveyard effect of Malicious will bring out the final third Malicious under Summon Sorceress‘s Link Arrow, allowing Summon Sorceress to target it to Special Summon The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots.

Malicious and Silent Boots will become Knightmare Goblin. The graveyard effect of Silent Boots will fetch for The Phantom Knights of Shade Brigandine, which can be set and activated immediately to Special Summon itself as a Normal Monster. Summon Sorceress and Shade Brigandine will then become Firewall Dragon.

This opening will typically finish with an Extra Link consisting of Tri-Gate Wizard, Borrelsword Dragon and various Knightmare Link Monsters, while giving Knightmare Corruptor Iblee to the opponent .

An alternative opening is to go for Topologic Gumblar Dragon to discard two cards from the opponent’s hand during your turn. During the opponent’s turn, the Quick Effect of Linkuriboh will Special Summon itself to a Monster Zone beside a Link Arrow, triggering Topologic Gumblar Dragon to discard another two cards from the opponent’s hand. It is nigh impossible for the opponent to mount a comeback especially with Tri-Gate Wizard negating one of their two remaining cards.

OCG2018047_Gouki.jpg

OCG201804-7.jpg

The Japan World Championship Qualifier (WCQ) is held in 3 Stages – Stage 1: Shop Representative Tournament, Stage 2: Block Representative Tournament and Stage 3: Japan Representative Tournament. The Stage 2 Block Representative Tournament was held over the weekends of Week #7 (12, 13 May) and Week #8 (19, 20 May). This resulted in significantly lesser tournaments over these 2 weekends as many Japanese players were busy playing in their respective Block Representative Tournaments.

Sky Striker is the primary deck of choice for this WCQ season. The Philippines Qualifier saw a similar result as YOT Thailand 2018, with multiple Sky Striker making the top cut of the tournament, and then winning the tournament altogether.

Magician continues to perform well in China, but they have been losing popularity in the other regions.

Running Destiny HERO – Malicious in ABC and Gouki is now the newest trending build for setting up an Extra Link lockdown.

This report will cover 68 top-performing decks from 10 tournaments that were held in Japan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand during 26 May – 5 June 2018.

Sky Striker

The Asia Championship 2018 Hong Kong Qualifier in Week #9 had a strong influence over the Singapore Qualifier and Thailand Qualifier in Week #10.

Kwong Ka Ho went 9-2 to finished 1st in “Asia Championship 2018 Hong Kong Qualifier” which had 235 participants.

He ran White Howling in the Side Deck for the Sky Striker mirror match.

White Howling requires a WATER monster to activate and that is easily satisfied with Sky Striker Ace – Shizuku. White Howling banishes 1 Spell card from the opponent’s graveyard, reducing their Spell count, but also negates the effect of all Spell effects on the opponent’s field for that turn.

While some Japanese players ran White Howling in their Side Decks initially, they were mostly dropped after the release of Cybernetic Horizon. White Howling is a Trap card, so it requires the player to go first and have it set on the field to activate it on the opponent’s turn. However in the Sky Striker mirror match, going second is a huge advantage due to having the Battle Phase for Sky Striker Ace – Hayate.

Yabaiyo (やばいよ) went 6-2 and finished 1st in “4th MCS with Hatti CS” (Team 3v3) which had 30 teams (90 participants).

He ran Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion in the Side Deck.

Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion is slowly seeing increased usage against Sky Striker. Ghost Belle is useful for negating the activation of Sky Striker Ace – Raye‘s graveyard effect, Sky Striker Ace – Kagari, Sky Striker Mecha – Shark Cannon and not to forget, White Howling.

Outside of the Sky Striker match-up, Ghost Belle is also useful against ABC and Gouki, being able to negate the activation of A-Assault Core and Gouki Re-Match. Using Ghost Belle to negate Called by the Grave also ensures that Maxx “C”, Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring or Effect Veiler will be able to resolve successfully.

Magician

Huang Shin-En “再生哥”, the 2013 World Champion, had been playing Performapal Magician.

He went 5-1 and finished 3 – 4th in “Asia Championship 2018 Taiwan Qualifier” which had 31 participants.

He had a strong run, going 4-0 to finish 1st on the Swiss Standing and making the Top 8 cutoff. However his run was halted in the semi-final match when he went up against the eventual champion who was also running Performapal Magician.

As the 19th National Taiwan University (NTU) Cup is coming up on 17 June 2018, Shin-En has elected not to reveal his Side Deck.

ABC

Tsujimura Ryosuke “ひつじ”, the 2017 World Champion, continues on his winning streak with Greener HERO ABC FTK in Week #9.

He went 7-1 and finished 1st in “9th Yokkaichi Cup with Hatti CS” (Team 3v3) which had 39 teams (117 participant).

Magical Mid-Breaker Field was his tech to protect his combo from being disrupted by the opponent.

When going first, Magical Mid-Breaker Field stops Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit, Effect Veiler and Infinite Impermanence.

When going second, in addition to the earlier mentioned, Magical Mid-Breaker Field also stops Sky Striker Mecha – Widow Anchor and Supreme King Dragon Clear Wing.

Magical Mid-Breaker Field fits conveniently into ABC as the deck is already running Terraforming and Set Rotation.

Among the 5 recently concluded Asia Championship 2018 Qualifiers, Sky Striker was victorious in 4 of them. The Taiwan Qualifier was the only one which had Performapal Magician winning, but even then, Sky Striker finished in the 2nd place.

Duel City 2018 Yantai had a refreshing and exhilarating Final Match featuring Greener Sky Striker Monarch versus Genex Atlantean Mermail (link to video).

The Greener Sky Striker Monarch is an interesting and innovative deck that uses the Sky Striker engine for Tribute Summoning the Monarchs. One of the impressive moves that was pulled off with the deck was playing 2 Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones in the same chain to Special Summon 2 “Sky Striker Ace Tokens”. The Tokens were then used to Link Summon Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights, whose effect was activated to send Restoration of the Monarchs to the graveyard and Special Summon Edea the Heavenly Squire from the deck. Edea in turn Special Summons Eidos the Underworld Squire, allowing an additional Tribute Summon for the turn.

The Genex Atlantean Mermail deck is built around discarding the opponent’s hand using Moulinglacia the Elemental Lord and Topologic Gumblar Dragon. The deck opens with Moulinglacia to discard 2 cards, and then follow by Gumblar Dragon to discard another 2 . During the opponent’s turn after they had drawn their card, Gumblar Dragon will be triggered again to discard another 2 cards. That would be a total of 6 discards, essentially discarding the opponent’s whole opening hand.

Sky Striker was already performing quite well at the start of the OCG 2018.04, but there were still some games where the deck would fizzle out due to not drawing Sky Striker Mobilize – Engage!. This consistency issue was resolved with the release of Sky Striker Ace – Hayate in Cybernetic Horizon, propelling Sky Striker to the top.

Sky Striker is undoubtedly the best deck in this format, having won multiple major tournaments such as YOT Thailand 2018 and 4 out of 5 Asia Championship 2018 Qualifiers. In the Japan World Championship Qualifiers 2018, 4 out of 5 players won their World Championship 2018 invitation using Sky Striker too.

Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones – 3 → 1
The limitation of Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones does decrease the consistency of Sky Striker, but the impact to Sky Striker’s strategy is little. Sky Striker is doing better than ever in the OCG 2018.07 format as its worst match-up, Magician, is now out of the competitive scene.

The limitation of Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm saw Magician focusing on the Performapal build.

Magician has a good match-up against Sky Striker as Star Pendulumgraph prevents Sky Striker Mecha – Widow Anchor and Sky Striker Maneuver – Afterburners!from targeting your Spellcaster monsters.

Magician is also able to run Naturia Beast and Secret Village of the Spellcasters to further skew the match-up in their favour.

Astrograph Sorcerer – 3 → 1
Harmonizing Magician – 3 → 1
Heavymetalfoes Electrumite – 3 → 1
Limiting these 3 core cards of the deck left Magician with no more tricks up their sleeves.

Sky Striker ABC was performing quite well early in the format while running Shaddoll engine in their Side Deck. However, their weakness was later figured out to be Retaliating “C”.

A new variant, Greener HERO ABC FTK, came out mid format and saw a brief surge in popularity during Golden Week. While they have a relatively short appearance, their impact on the competitive scene is significant enough to warrant a direct ban to both Cannon Soldier and Toon Cannon Soldier.

Cannon Soldier – 3 → 0
Toon Cannon Soldier – 3 → 0
Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones – 3 → 1
Although the First-Turn-Kill is still possible with Cannon Soldier MK-2 or Amazoness Archer, the combo is now much harder to pull off and requires a significant investment in the Extra Deck.

Having Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones limited hurts ABC, but running 2 Speedroid Terrortop and 1 Speedroid Taketomborg is a good substitute.

HornetDrones.jpg

Out of all 542 decks, 179 decks were Sky Striker and 116 decks were using the Sky Striker engine. 247 decks were not running any Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones.

ABC and Gouki are the top two decks that gained the most from running Hornet Drones.

However the Sky Striker engine is only applicable for decks that performs a significant amount of Link Summoning as part of their strategy. Pendulum decks like Magician and Zefra do not have a use for Hornet Drones.
