Archetype Units

Recommended Posts

Looking over Arc-V manga cards, I came across this little gem:

DangerousFrightfurNightmary-EN-Manga-AV.

Not much to look at, but her text is a lot more interesting:

When this card battles, it gains 300 ATK for each "Frightfur Unit" ("Frightfur"/"Fluffal"/"Edge Imp") in your Graveyard, until the End Phase. When this card destroys an opponent's monster, you can send a number of "Frightfur Unit" monsters from your Deck to the Graveyard, up to the Level of the destroyed monster. If this card is targeted by a card effect: you can banish one "Frightfur Unit" monster from your Extra Deck, this card cannot be targeted by that effect.

Apparently the manga is making use of a term "Archetype Unit" as an all-encompassing term for multiple archetypes in one, although it's just been for Fluffal, Edge Imp, and Frightfur so far. Now while most archetypes are naturally soloists, what's the thoughts of using the Unit nomenclature for cards that can support multiple archetypes at once? And could it be implemented as actual OCG/TCG card text?

I mean, I like the concept, but considering you're using up more space on the card's text than before, it doesn't seem very practical. If only archetypes were listed somewhere else, or where some other factor than just name, but for now, due to the mess of text Yu-Gi-Oh cards are...yeah.

Its actually a neat idea to unite sub-archetypes with high-differences of names and traits but as mention by Dova its actually consume more space than needed

Probs a distinct symbols as text font or Watermark like MTG does? (well in its Un-Set, but you get the idea) i mean children is smart enough to know each symbol that represent certain unit as they does on other tcg like mtg, pokemon, or CFV no?

I suppose it's only really efficient when you need to reference the Unit multiple times in one text. I just thought it was neat that the manga included nomenclature for multiple archetypes being encompassed in one, given how useful it would be for custom card making.

Considering something like this can be rendered obsolete with archetype naming conventions like "l-swarm" or "Ritual Beast", there's... really no reason for this to be around. Also that it's more efficient to just list the archetype anyways.

I mean, the best-case solution was if, from the start, they had archetype names as a separate trait underneath card names or something, but that's for a different game and we're definitely long past the point where that can be implemented successfully.

Realistically, I think the only card it would shorten would be Skullcrobat Joker, but it would make for an interesting design precedent and would allow for Konami to make more duo/trio-archetypes freely.  Anything that lets 'em be more creative (rather than limiting) is a positive in my book.
