[Written] FIRE Insects, the first of its kind! The Moltwing Archetype!

Have we ever had any FIRE Insects? I don"t think we do. The archetype name is based off the words Molting and Molten hence the FIRE Insect archetype. The archetype is based on taking damage to activate effects. Like Cloudians, they have the "Cannot be destroyed by battle." effects. So let's get it on!

 

Prompt: An archetype containing FIRE Insects that upon taking damage, takes action. With low stats and effects such as "If your opponent's monster attacks this Defense Position card, inflict piercing damage to you.", the Deck allows itself to hurt the player to trigger the effects. The monster line-up has effects that make them indestructible by battle and certain exclusive features such as making both player take battle damage from a battle to doubling all battle damage between two monsters (this effect can stack). There is also no Extra Deck needed. The archetype takes advantage of "Sol Absorption" and its Spell/Traps line-up gives recoverability and protection, alongside redirecting attacks.

Moltwing Cicada

Effect: Cannot be destroyed by battle. If your opponent attacks this Defense Position card, inflict piercing damage to you. If you take damage either by battle involving this card or by a card effect: You can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower "Moltwing" monster from your Deck.

 

Moltwing Beetle

FIRE Insect Level 3

Effect: When this card is Normal Summoned: You can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower "Moltwing" monster from your hand. During your opponent's turn (Quick Effect): You can target 1 "Moltwing" monster you control; your opponent must attack that target this turn. If you take damage from a battle involving a "Moltwing" monster you control: You can add 1 "Moltwing" monster from your Deck to your hand whose ATK is equal to or lower than the damage you took. You can only use this effect of "Moltwing Beetle" once per turn.

 

Moltwing Firebug

Effect: Cannot be destroyed by battle. If you take damage, while you control a face-up "Moltwing" monster (Quick Effect): You can reveal this card in your hand; Special Summon this card, then gain LP equal to the damage you took.

 

Moltwing Cockroach

FIRE Insect Level 1

Effect: Cannot be destroyed by battle. If your opponent attacks this Defense Position card, inflict piercing battle damage to you. If you take battle damage from a battle involving this card: You can Special Summon up to 2 "Moltwing Cockroach" from your hand or Deck.

 

Moltwing Firefly

FIRE Insect Level 3

1200/900

Effect: Cannot be destroyed by battle. If your opponent attacks this Defense Position card, inflict piercing battle damage to you. If you take battle damage from a battle involving a "Moltwing" monster you control: You can target 1 card your opponent controls; destroy it. You can only use this effect of "Moltwing Firefly" up to thrice per turn.

 

Moltwing Stag Beetle

FIRE Insect Level 4

Effect: If this card battles, change it to Defense Position after damage calculations. If your opponent's monster attacks this Defense Position monster, inflict piercing damage to you. If you take battle damage from battles involving this card: You can add 1 "Moltwing" card from your Deck to your hand, then gain LP equal to half the damage you took. You can only use this effect of "Moltwing Stag Beetle" once per turn.

 

Absolute Moltwing - Sproutlings

FIRE Insect Level 6

Effect: While this card is in your hand, if a "Moltwing" monster you control battles an opponent's monster (Quick Effect): You can Special Summon this card from your hand, and if you do, change your monster's ATK to 0 and your opponent's monster's ATK to half of its original ATK, then proceed to damage calculation. Cannot be destroyed by battle. If your opponent's monster attacks this Defense Position card, inflict piercing damage to you. Each time you take damage from battles involving a "Moltwing" monster you control, gain 500 LP.

 

Absolute Moltwing - Butterfly

FIRE Insect Level 6

1900/1300

Effect: Cannot be destroyed by battle. If your opponent's monster attacks this Defense Position card, inflict piercing damage to you. If a "Moltwing" monster you control is targeted for an attack, while this card is in your hand or GY: You can Special Summon this card, and if you do, change the attack target to this card, then if you take damage, draw 1 card. If Summoned this way, banish this card when it leaves the field.

 

Absolute Moltwing - Prayer Mantis

FIRE Insect Level 6

Effect: Cannot be destroyed by battle. Any battle damage involving a "Moltwing" monster you control is inflicted to both players.

 

Absolute Moltwing - King Scarab

FIRE Insect Level 7

2400/2200

Effect: Must first be Special Summoned (from your hand) by banishing 1 "Moltwing" monster from your GY. You can Special Summon this card (from your GY) by banishing 1 "Moltwing" monster from your GY. Cannot be destroyed by battle. If this card attacks a Defense Position monster, inflict piercing damage to your opponent. If either player would take battle damage involving 2 monsters, double that damage inflicted.

Moltwing Growth Grounds

Field Spell Card

Effect: You can Normal Summon/Set 1 "Moltwing" monster in addition to your Normal Summon/Set. (You can only gain this effect once per turn.) If you take battle damage involving a face-up "Moltwing" monster you control: You can reveal 3 "Moltwing" monsters with different names from your Deck; your opponent adds 1 of them to your hand, then sends the rest to the GY. You can only use this effect of "Moltwing Growth Grounds" once per turn.

 

Moltwing Sheddings

Normal Spell Card

Effect: Target 1 "Moltwing" monster you control and 1 monster your opponent controls; immediately after this chain resolves, make them battle, and apply ATK/DEF as damage calculations depending on their battle positions, then you can add 1 Level 4 or lower "Moltwing" monster from your Deck to your hand. You can only activate 1 "Moltwing Sheddings" per turn.

 

Moltwing Metamorphosis

Quick-Play Spell Card

Effect: Tribute 1 "Moltwing" monster you control; Special Summon 2 Level 4 or lower "Moltwing" monsters (1 each from your hand and Deck). You cannot Special Summon monsters from your Extra Deck this turn. You can only activate 1 "Moltwing Metamorphosis" per turn.

 

Moltwing Synthesis

Normal Spell Card

Effect: Gain 500 LP for each "Moltwing" monster you control. If this card is in your GY, except the turn this card was sent there: You can banish this card, then target 1 "Moltwing" monster you control; it gains ATK equal to the difference of your LP and your opponent's LP until the End Phase. You can only use this effect of "Moltwing Synthesis" once per turn.

 

Sol Absorption

Quick-Play Spell Card

Effect: If you take damage: Special Summon 1 FIRE monster from your Deck with ATK equal to or lower than the damage you took. You can only activate 1 "Sol Absorption" per turn.

Moltwing Pheromones

Normal Trap Card

Effect: If your opponent attacks a "Moltwing" monster you control: Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower "Moltwing" monster from your GY, then change the attack target to that monster, and if you do, draw 1 card for each 1000 damage you take from that battle.

 

Moltwing Endurance

Normal Trap Card

Effect: Target up to 2 "Moltwing" monsters you control; this turn, those targets cannot be destroyed or be targeted by your opponent's card effects. If you would take damage that would reduce your LP to 0, while you control a face-up "Moltwing" monster: You can banish this card from your GY; make that damage to you 0, and if you do, your LP becomes 100. You can only use this effect of "Moltwing Endurance" once per Duel.

Absolute Moltwing - Absolute Goliathus

FIRE Insect Level 9 Fusion

Effect: 1 "Absolute Moltwing" monster + 2 "Moltwing" monsters

Must first be Special Summoned (from your Extra Deck) by Tributing the above cards you control. Cannot be destroyed by battle or card effects. If you take damage: You can make this card gain ATK equal to that damage you took, then gain LP equal to half that damage you took. Once per turn: You can discard 1 card, then target 1 "Moltwing" monster in your GY; Special Summon that target.

Solid cards. There's not much to complain about here, with the monsters covering a wide range of interesting effects, requiring player interaction to get anywhere, yet not in a way that prevents them from being live most of the time. I really like the creativity with all of the different cards, being supportive but not entirely so, with means to deal with many potential outcomes.

 

However, as seen in your duel with CMEshai, their win condition is...somewhat lacking. Not only is it useless when your opponent benefits off battle, which is actually more of a minor point, but if your opponent is playing a defensive stun Deck, there's not really much you can do except hope you end up with Sheddings.

 

Pheromones is perhaps the weakest card in the bunch, requiring your opponent to attack you, something they won't be doing unless your monster is Set and they don't know what it is, and in that case, it won't be a "Moltwing" monster they're attacking. I would suggest it applies for just an attack in general, as it only Special Summons from the Deck. Useful if your opponent clears your field.

 

A few ruling questions for Sheddings; is either monster considered to be attacking? Can your monster attack while in face-up Defense Position? Is the searching applied after the battle or after the effect resolves? 

 

But yeah, really like this set! Could be expanded a bit more, but works as a nice rogue Deck for the moment, without being absurdly powerful or complicated.
