Youtubers stepping into the political ring.

 while i'm not sure if this'll actually become a debate, i've put it here since it has more than enough potential to get somewhat heavy.

youtubers have been quite vocal about politics in their country for some time, and it looks like they're finally puttung their money where their mouths and values are. quite a few large names on youtube politics have started moving into the political ring, including sargon of akkad, and count dankula, so, my fellow forum goers:

what are your thoughts on people like dankula stepping into the political ring?

what will you be expecting from them?

who do you think will be jumping in/would you like to jump in?

what arguments do you have for/against people from the youtube persona circles jumping into politics?

ect

[spoiler=my own thoughts]

i like the idea. i've been vocal (not here, but elsewhere) about people on youtube actually jumping into politics. in my opinion, the only common people with enough sway to make real change, are those who have already garnered enough of a following outside of the political circles. and while i may find down the line that i don't completely agree with dankula or sargon politically, i fully agree with the idea of people like them stepping into the political ring, to challenge things from the inside.

i fully expect the same level of honesty that they've given us to date, though i understand that they might not be as forthcoming with national secrets. i expect them to be able to resist becoming the monsters they currently fight, and hope that they can help their countrymen regain a hold of the land they live in.

personally, i'm not too sure who in america i could look forward to jumping into politics, because there's a lot of american political youtubers that i disagree with overall. and there's many that i simply don't live close enough to. razorfist might be the best one though. funking love that dude. i'd likely back karen straughan on my canadian neighbors front, simply because she's the person who actualy opened my eyes to a lot of the views i hold now. doubt she'd do it, but she'd be my first choice. past that, it's a case by case.

arguments for putting them into the political circle, are pretty simple. i've seen their views, they have quite a fair level of intelligence, they've put in the work for their views, and the best way to change a system (or at least the most peaceful) is to work it from the inside. not to mention putting their money where their mouth is is the only way to get your points across to the masses.

any thoughts from elsewhere?

This might be odd coming from me...but I'm sick and tired of politics. I want to watch my videos without being pulled into this sheet.

Sargon and Dank are kinda already political in their channels so it's w/e. But I don't want it spreading further to say gamers

There are a large number of games which are political that come to mind.  Off the top of my head, the entire Wolfenstein series comes to mind.  Would you say you want to see games be less political or you want to see less gamers becoming political?

Provided that they keep actual political discussions in separate videos and not have them intermingled with non-political videos, then I don't really care if they go into this further. Not that I haven't already seen people bringing up US politics in the comment section with AMVs and whatnot where they have no place*.

While I certainly have my opinions on how government officials are acting nowadays, including with how Trump behaves at times among other things, I'm going to abstain from joining the movement for several reasons.

Part of it is that I lack adequate recording equipment and obviously time to actually do this amidst my other priorities. Rest of it is probably misunderstanding of certain issues that apply to the whole country (i.e. gun control. abortion, shootings) because many of the problems with them on the mainland either aren't such or now here on the same scope where I live. And yeah, as far as YT is concerned, I'm technically in the shadows and not a brand name.

===

Then again, I don't really watch a lot of the big name Youtubers so take this statement on their entry into politics as you will.

Ultimately its a youtuber's choice what they want to do and  they have to live with the consequences of their actions afterwards. I personally would recommend keeping politics out of non political videos to avoid loosing viewers.

The simplest reason for my recommendation is that some people don't want to think about politics when they watch youtube videos on other subjects.

You also risk alienating viewers if your too political when you don't need to be. Note that I very much respect a youtuber's right to have a public politcal opinion. Provided that they don't put it in places where it doesn't belong.

As a real life example of why throwing politics into media where it doesn't belong can be detrimental to your "business": I heard a story about a theater group that did a Shakespearean play. It involved a scene with an assassination and for their version instead of accurate costuming they had Donald Trump being executed by women and minorities. The theater group quickly lost 2 sponsors (Delta Airlines and Bank of America) as result.

I respect the idea that youtubers, much like celebrities, can have a public opinion, but I don't like it when they bring it into places where it shouldn't be.

Honestly, everyone has a right to participate in politics, or at least that is the default.

The President of the United States is, essentially, a political layperson, so it's far beyond proven that one can use their established following to pivot into a political career.

As for those who believe a creator should separate their political views from their creations, I disagree heavily. It is their prerogative to decide what belongs in their content. Even if nobody else wants it, they still have the right to sway their influence however they please (unless of course they choose to do so to directly or indirectly cause harm to another). That being said, the responses to said decisions are by all means the prerogative of the consumer. Nobody has control over how their decisions, actions, and convictions are perceived. The dialogue between a creator and a consumer is an ever-changing one, as the creator controls the supply of their media, while the consumer has power over the demand.

Tl;dr is videogamedunkey ran for president, he has every right to leverage his following into political momentum, and his subscribers have every right to unsub if they don't like these changes.
