Animated Marketing

Something that I've wondered for a LONG time is why movies that are so amazing (in my opinion anyways) can fail amazingly hard. I've seen this time and time again with animated Warner Brother and Disney films.

A primary example that I've been on a binge with is Disney's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". Now you can argue that there really isnt anything TOO spectactualar about this movie. Though it's hard to argue against it's good writing, composing, and visuals.

I dont want this to be me gushing on about why movies like "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", "The Iron Giant", and "The Great Mouse Detective" (The "thes" are completely coincidental) deserve much more praise than they are given, but rather why these movies failed on first release. This was something that I hadnt noticed, but watch the following and tell me if you see a partern:

None of these trailers accurately portray what the movies are actually like. Whether they are Disney or not, they are all being forced into that "Disney Mold" despite the fact none of them fit. Notre Dame is not a "celebration". Iron Giant is no where near flat as they portray it to be. Not to mention the Great Mouse detective took actual suspenseful scenes from the movie to make them out as gags.

Am I overthinking this? If I'm not, can we ever escape this "Be like Disney" mentality?
