A Dungeons & Dragons RP

Hosted and Co-hosted by:

Sethera and Hakima

So I have wanted to do a Dungeons & Dragons roleplay on this site for a couple years now. However, due to various factors in my life, such as hosting and cohosting active RPs, and real-life duties, I have kept telling myself "I'll do it when I have more time." And since I have recently completed a number of real-life tasks, I figure now would be as good a time as any to start this--or I'd never do it. I am naming my D&D RP concept Natural Twenty, as an homage to the old failed club, but the title of the actual RP adventure will be different.

[spoiler=Rules and Information]

  1. Read the forum rules and RP section rules.
  2. Limited acceptance.
  3. Activity is not only nice, but also essential for this type of RP.
  4. Yeah, that's it.

This will be a "play-by-post" Dungeons & Dragons roleplay. I chose this out of one reason and one reason alone: time. Setting aside even a couple hours a week can be difficult for a gaming session, mainly because it usually takes a bit longer than that and you have to prepare for it, such as make sure you’re in a quiet area with few interruptions. Not only that, but as many of us live in different time zones, having a set time of the day for this such as the evening might not work out well. In addition, depending on one’s schedule, or lack thereof, a person can be available at such-and-such time on one day, and then be completely booked the next week at the same time. The point of D&D is to have a group of people together at once playing a game. Online, that might not always be the most realistic of ventures. The point of play-by-post is to eliminate such roadblocks.

So yes, this will be literally D&D. With character sheets, dice rolls, and all that jazz. I'll be utilizing a Discord chat for most of the technical details, but the actual writing will be done through posts. Note that this is an experimental RP of sorts. We’re doing something completely different than most RPs on this site, but I’ve seen it work on other sites, so I’m optimistic that it will work here too.

[spoiler=Setting]

A few of you know how much I love worldbuilding. With that in mind, you might be surprised that I will be choosing to do a pre-made adventure module for this RP. This is for a couple reasons. One, homebrewing takes a ton of work, and I'm not quite sure I want to start the RP out with that. If you want to see a homebrewed RP world, then feel free to wander on over to my Fire Emblem RP. Two, there will probably be several newcomers who haven’t yet experienced the thrill of D&D. What better way for a first-timer than with an officially sanctioned adventure? After that I might end up doing something homebrewed, but I also might do another adventure module or campaign. Who knows.

As to the adventure, I will most likely be going with "Hoard of the Dragon Queen." It’s not perfect, but I feel like it has a lot of potential and the whole dragon thing is very archetypal D&D, which is what I’m going for. However, if I find that most of you have played it, and are unable to keep that from influencing your play, I might do something else.

And yes, that means we are going with 5th edition, since that is my favorite edition.

[spoiler=Choosing Our Players]

Because of the nature of this RP, where we will use a pre-existing adventure module with its own setting, characters should ideally be tied into the setting. However, as character creation here will require much more work than is normal for RPs, I will not make everybody go through that process just to see who will get accepted.

Instead, I will be judging applicants based on an interaction scene. We will be holding a pre-RP of sorts where you can choose to roleplay as any medieval fantasy-type character you prefer. This does not have to be the character that you eventually go with, and in fact, probably won't be. This scene will go on for at least a couple weeks, and in that time, I will be judging based on a variety of factors, such as characterization, basic writing skills, and reliability.

I will also be keeping in mind your past performances in RPs. For those who I haven’t met before, please link me to one of your prior applications as well as the RP it was in so I can get an idea of what kind of RPer you are. For those new to the site, the RP does not have to have taken place on YCM. I will also be gauging the amount of time and effort you are willing to invest in this. If you are only “slightly interested” then you may as well stop reading. Not to be harsh, but this will require a stronger level of commitment than you might be willing to give.

Note that I am not in fact, judging by the level of D&D experience you have. This RP was created to give YCMers a chance to D&D on this forum, so D&D newbies and veterans alike are welcome.

There will only be four open slots for this RP, as I am going for a five-person party, including the cohost. This might sound abysmally small, but D&D traditionally consists of four players and one DM. I prefer five players however, for the flexibility it gives people in character creation, where they don’t have to be locked into the same four roles. Unlike with the Natural Twenty club, I will volunteer for the DM position this time around. If there are more than four people that I really think could be a good fit for this RP, I might be willing to either a) extend the group or b) run a separate campaign with four or five more people. However, both options are big maybes, as they would require about double the work that I'd be doing with a single campaign of five people.

Note: Yes we are still accepting applicants.

Expressing pending interest. I like this idea and have always wanted to try D&D. However, if a bunch of people end up wanting in, I'll probably bow out to give them less competition and you less of a headache.

Shush you, that's my job.

Would be keen to participate because A) D&D, B) YCM folks and C) it would be nice to see a proper DM in action. Would also be happy to bow out to give other people room, but regardless would want to hear how it goes.

Might prepare me for hosting my own later :P

Don't worry, I've done this for three RPs already. I can do it for a fourth.

Well I'm glad to see there's interest for this RP. And shush, Hakima, they might not know you're joking.

But yeah, I think this is enough interest to turn it into an OOC. We shall start on the test RP tonight--or tomorrow if I really drop the ball. The point of this is to get several posts, even simple ones, out in a relatively short time frame. I will only be posting to set the scene, change the scene, or give NPC actions--basically, act as the DM--and a few of those times will be considered the start of a round, which I will make very obvious. I will not be giving deadlines or dates for when I start a new round, so try and get as many posts out as you can. While I do prefer quality posts, I will be mainly judging on activity, that is, seeing that you can stick to an active posting schedule.

I will be giving more time before the end of the first round in case you all need time to figure out exactly what kind of character you want to use for the test RP. You are allowed to use characters you've used in previous RPs, though keep in mind that you will probably not be using those characters for the actual RP, or at least not those exact characters.

Edit: The test RP is up! I sent it via PM so look out for it in your inbox. Also make sure to refresh before posting so you don't get ninja'd.

Will there be a discord for this, out of curiosity?

EDIT: *reads OP* Ah, nevermind.

Actually, that's a good point. While there will be a Discord server for this, I planned on creating it once we finalized the applicants. However, there have now been a couple asking about a Discord beforehand, which makes me wonder. Do you guys want me to set up a Discord server for this now, or should we wait until after choosing the applicants? The main reason I wanted to wait was because if I started it up beforehand, I would have to eventually kick some people out, which wouldn't feel very good on either end. But setting it up now might be good if anybody wants to discuss the test RP or ask quick questions.

Also, in case the wording was vague, you are allowed, and encouraged, to post multiple times within a round.

Make it now so you don't have to later. There's no need to kick people out of the server just because they don't make the cut either; some people may still want to read the RP and hang out with the RPers. I know there are at least two RP discords that still hang on to people who aren't actively in the RP, so they can hang out and stuff.

Yeah, since the test RP will last a couple weeks, it'd be nice to have something set up for it. And like Yui said, it'd be a nice place for people to hang out. Also, if anyone needs help with the rules, people who know them but don't make it can help out.
