A Trip through Neo Space ! New Neo-Spacian Support (Written)

The Old Charlelot

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

A while back, I promised that I would be presenting my ideas for rejuvenating the Neo-Spacian Archetype, but never ending up delivering. So today, I decided to sit down and finished what I had started months ago, and, if I do say so myself, I think the result is pretty good. This Archetype being composed of different cards with different names, I don’t really know if I could ever make this Deck consistent and “Meta Ready”, but I feel that one could definitely have a good time using my cards. With that being said, feel free to look and tell me what you guys think.

Well, until next time, have a nice day.

[spoiler=Monster Cards:'']

If you control no monsters or only control “Neo-Spacian”, or “Chrysalis” monsters (Quick Effect): You can banish this card from your field or GY; Special Summon 1 “Elemental HERO Neos” from your hand or GY. You can only use 1 of “Neo Space Caretaker” effect per turn, and only once that turn.

[spoiler=Spell Cards:'']

Neo Space Station

  • Neo-Spacian: Special Summon 1 Level 4 monster with the same name from your Extra Deck to any of your Main Monster Zones (it is treated as having been Special Summoned with “NEX”).

If a face-up Fusion Monster that lists “Elemental HERO Neos” as its material you control is destroyed and sent to the GY or returns from your field to your Extra Deck: You can banish this card from your GY, then shuffle 1 Level 3 “Neo-Spacian” monster from your GY or that you’ve banished into the Deck; Special Summon 1 Level 4 monster with the same name from your Extra Deck to any of your Main Monster Zones (it is treated as having been Special Summoned with “NEX”).

[spoiler=Alternative Ideas (2018-11-30):'']

This topic was started before the new Neo-Spacian support was first revealed. Given that, I've changed my original support to focus more on the Chrysalis and NEX Neo-Spacians, two branches of the Archetype that were seemingly forgotten by Konami.

I used to love playing these bad boys, and am glad you tried your hand at them! I will say that they are a tad strong: You should approach the set as a whole as something they need, not make multiple versions of the 1 card they need which leaves you with far too many generic and powerful cards.

I think you should change the "Neo" support to "Neos" and "Neo-Spacian" support, as there are quite a few other "Neo" cards, like the Neo Flamvells, and the infamous Miscellaneousaurus. Regardless, I think the double effect on Caretaker is a bit much, considering you can discard and immediately use its effect to get a Neos from your Deck. I'd suggest either a restriction on only using 1 effect for the turn to tone it down a little. It's also a little...bland, but if that's what they need, I can't complain.

[spoiler=Spells]Neo Space Station...is a little weird. One the one hand, I think it should probably just have "This card's name is always treated as "Neo Space"." and somehow do its own thing apart from Neo Space, but on the other hand...I like the idea of one bringing in the other. Maybe make this card not Neo Space in the Deck, so it's useful if you open it or eventually draw it, but it doesn't have the searchable advantage of the original? Also, why the field spell destruction?

Nursery should probably not send from the field, as the Chrysalises already do that. Maybe Summon using the same Type instead, to be a little less awkward? Regardless, nice to see the Chrysalis monsters seeing some love. and I do like the last two effects. Nicely done, and good that it doesn't directly ladder from effect to effect like Caretaker, although perhaps not Summon from the hand, just to limit it and not make it Summon from everywhere as you are most likely Normal Summoning your Chrysalis'? Basic OCG fix-up time with my suggested changes! :D

Advanced Contact...is weird. Why does it banish itself, and why does it go from the GY as well? It just seems odd. I understand the searching of Neo Space, and you being able to use it after you've activated it in the first place, but, like quite a few other cards here, it almost is too much. I'm also not a huge fan of SSing directly to the Main Monster Zones, ignoring the mechanics set in place by Master Rule 4. Why not rework the second effect into a Link Monster? Regardless, good to see NEX.

Vessel is cool. Suffers from the same "hand Deck GY" problem as the rest of the set, but it's rather unique in the way it does its support while not overdoing it.

[spoiler=Traps]Reinforcements is also cool. Coolio cool. Nothing really to say there. Other two traps are decent too...although there might be a bit too much suppor there. Not like, too strong support, although that's a thing too; I mean, you have too many cards here to be played in addition to all of the Chrysalises AND the Neo-Spacians AND Neos AND the original supportive cards. Maybe you could drop some of these, or from the spells.

[spoiler=Extra Deck]Barely enough space here for everything, with 11 original Neos Fusions. I guess you can choose from them, and not all of the OGs are good, but still. You really went to town for this task, didn't ya :P

Your Fusion are all...mostly good again. I wish your support had some specific NEX stuff, and some specific main deck Neos stuff, instead of smooshing them all together. That way, the Extra Deck issues wouldn't really be a problem. Could definitely spread out a bit more there!

Hey there,

Thanks for reviewing; here was my reasoning beyond my design choices. I feel that this was one of the hardest Archetypes I tackled in recent memory because of its sheer lack of focus. While modern card series all have the same name or have common traits that allow for some sort of synergy, Neo-Spacians go in all sorts of directions and are painfully slow by today’s standards. That is why I produced more cards that I usually do, to provide players with diversity in their Deckbuilding. For example, a few of the new Fusions mainly focus on control the board (Panther and Mole) while others focus on OTK (Hummingbird and Scarab).

With that out of the way, more details.

[spoiler=Caretaker:'']

I believe it would be better to keep the “Neo” search going for this card, reason beign that I really wanted it to be able to get “neo Space Pathfinder” from the deck. With “Neo Space” being so important to field control and “Pathfinder” not being a “Neos”, “HERO”, “Neo-Spacian” etc. I decided to give it some more searchability, for lack of a better word, to avoid too much bricking. I believed that allowing “Caretaker” to search for a few other cards that are not related to the Archetype, a worthwhile trade for more consistency.

I don’t blame you for finding this card weird. To be honest, I really struggled with the appropriate language to use. The fact is, the Contact Fusion mechanic used by neo-Spacians is a really strange form of Fusion Summoning that really screwed with my brain. I wanted a sort of Fusion Gate-type card that would allow for Contact Fusions to be more efficient all the while not rendering the old Neo Space entirely irrelevant. In the end, I decided to change the effect. Hope it’s clearer and feasible. If not… well, in the word of a man far wiser than me:

It’s time to Screw the Rules! – Littlekuriboh.

Also, the reason I decided to change to name while in the field, Deck and GY was so that it could be searched via “Neo Space Pathfinder” and also be used for the “Chrysalis” all the while being useful for the overall point of the Deck: Making Contact Fusions. I felt this was necessary to counter the nasty effect of the Neos Fusions (which, let’s face it, is completely crippling by today’s standards) while not completely replacing “Neo Space” (which basically does noting useful most of the time). That way, I could keep it in the Deck while avoiding running 3 copies.

Small thing here, but I can't use Monster-Types to dictate which "Neo-Spacian" will come out since "Chrysalis Dolphin" is a Fish and "N-S Aqua Dolphin" is a Warrior... For some reason.

[spoiler=Banishing effect for Spells:'']

With an Archetype that was so chaotic and so unfocused, it was my belief that I should maximize card efficiency by having each card having at least 2 usable effects. The idea came to me after seeing the new “Contact Gate” card revealed not too long ago, which functions in similar ways. But, you are right for the most part, it was pretty random. So for now, I’ll take the banishing part out and rethink about it later.

[spoiler=Fusions on Main monster Zones:'']

Normally, I would be on board with respecting Master Rule 4… If the Deck I was upgrading wasnt “Neo-Spacians”. With its entire focus on Fusions and with the “NEX-Spacians” being only marginally better than regular 4 star monsters (and not nearly giving the same advantages a LINK monster would), I decided to allow it only for them. All the “Neos” Warrior-Type Fusions obey Master Rules 4. Also, it’s sometimes pretty fun to Screw the Rules! OK… I’ll stop with that. On another note, the Archetype was originally imagined as an extension of the “HERO” series in the GX era and for that reason, I wasn’t very keen on making the Archetype work using too many modern mechanics. I wanted it to run, if possible, using only Fusion monsters and the generically available LINK monsters.

Despite all those justifications, I did make some changes. I hope the new effects are at least clearer, if not more efficient.

But whatever the case, have a nice day.
