Umbra, Dragon Ruler of Dusk

DARK/Lvl 7

Dragon/Effect

If this card is in your hand or GY: You can banish a total of 2 DARK and/or Dragon-Type monsters from your hand and/or GY, except this card; Special Summon this card. During your opponent's End Phase, if this card was Special Summoned: Return it to the hand. You can discard this card and 1 DARK monster to the GY, then target 1 Banished monster; Add it to your Hand OR Send it to the GY. If this card is banished: You can add 1 DARK Dragon-Type monster from your Deck to your hand. You can only use 1 "Umbra, Dragon Ruler of Dusk" effect per turn, and only once that turn.

Huh, IMO this looks surprisingly fair for a Dragon Ruler. It would be the 2nd weakest in ATK, and the discard effect is not as potent as the rest since it requires some setup. Granted, Rulers have no problem with banishing cards, but at least is not as straightforward as Tidal's nor Tempest, who pick from the Deck.

The card suffers from originality since you are following the Dragon Ruler template, but that's understandable.

Still, by nature or Dragon Rulers, this would be hella strong, and most likely would be put in the banlist right away. I'm still debating if it can be spared and left at 1. I would wait to see how Tempest does in OCG now that it was brought back to 1 to get a better idea of how a Ruler would do in the current metas. Also one has to consider that this Ruler is DARK, arguably one of the more common Attributes.

Yes, it's not that original but i didnt want to change the original Rulers effect template. Also while doing this card effect i was thinking about making a Light Version (but it would use Wyrms) for the Metaphys deck, but then i decided it wouldnt be that good

At this point I would asume if Konami ever decides to create LIGHT and DARK rulers (which I am not against), they would do it without involving dragons. They were broken because how they (even at 1) interacted with their counterparts. Limiting them to atributtes should be a must if they every release the versions for the most common elements.

As for the card itself, there is not much I can add that hasn been said, requiring set up but a cool reward for dark decks means a not that broken effect, by no means it could stay at 3 due to the d ruler nature but at 1 is a nice boost to dark decks and an almost free body for link climbing. I would assume that your LIGHT verison would banish cards from GY (for the discard effect) to synergize with metaphys and to pose as umbra's opposite.
