Episode 1: Hot Blue Sky
'The sun's not even real... how is it so hot...."
Yushiro Midori wiped the sweat and messy bangs of hair away from his brow. It was a futile gesture, but it kept the salt water and fiber out of his eyes for a few more moments. Even in the shade provided by the food truck's awning, the humidity of the day was oppressive, and the heat from the grill inside Fast Food certainly wasn't helping matters either.
"You know, Yush, we're pretty slow right now. You can cut out early if you'd like. Give you more time to get settled in?" Jo Gordon called over, in between flipping a burger patty and making sure she didn't over cook the french fries in her deep-frier. Yushiro visibly brightened at the idea, but shrank back a bit as he thought it over some.
"You sure?" He asked sheepishly, not wanting to seem like he was as eager to cut and run from his job as he was. Jo saw right through him as she turned around and handed the boy the complete meal she'd cooked, ready to go to the student sitting at a nearby picnic table, and let out her playful snicker of a laugh.
"I know you love me, and its sweet of you to want to keep a girl company, but I've got things under control over here." She punctuated her sentence by pointing over to the customer and continued. "Take him his food, then go enjoy the rest of the afternoon, ok? I'll give you a call the next time I need some extra hands."
Had Yushiro's face not already been red, he would have blushed. After last spring, he was pretty used to Jo teasing him, but he still couldn't help but feel a little embarrassed every time she alluded to the fact that he, and pretty much every other male student at Blue Yonder for that matter, found her so attractive. Still, he brushed it away as he grabbed the tray of food, his energy suddenly returning to him. "Alright. Thanks Jo!"
As for Blue Yonder itself, campus was abuzz with activity. It was the Sunday of move-in weekend, meaning the vast majority of the student body had begun showing up and moving into their rooms. To celebrate, the school had set up a few events and decorated campus (which was partly to blame for the slow day Fast Food had been having). For his part, Yushiro had already finished unpacking yesterday in expectation of a busy workday today, but now that he had the afternoon to himself, he felt compelled to take in some of the activity around campus. The student council was running an exhibition duel later that day between two students, both of them amateur entertainment duelists, and several school clubs were out advertising in the hopes of picking up new members before the official start of the school year. There was also the option of calling up Akira Hioshi, who by now had probably almost finished moving in himself.
Before he decided on a course of action, however, he had to go get a drink. It was way too hot out...
