#7125488 Right to Repair Expanded

Posted by Nathanael D. Striker on 26 October 2018 - 05:24 AM

https://motherboard....right-to-repair

In essence, this exception to Copyright Laws allows people to hack DRM in devices for the purpose of maintenance and repair, which further expands the exemption for tractors that happened a few years back. I'm curious how broad this change is and how people are going to take advantage of it.

Discuss this new development and the Right to Repair.

#7123154 California DMV has discovered it sent the Secretary of State’s Office 23,000...

Posted by Nathanael D. Striker on 14 October 2018 - 08:27 PM

...Such an unfortunate accident. Who could have possibly guessed that the state the gives illegal immigrants everything they need to vote, would accidentally give them the ability to vote./s

Seriously though, California's been on a pretty steady stream of screw ups as of late. The elected officials and state workers really ought to work on that soon, because it's not good for them, it's not good for the illegal (or legal) immigrants, and if left unchecked, will be absolutely terrible for the states as a whole.

"The DMV said none of the applicants were undocumented immigrants."

Seems like you didn't read carefully enough, so try again before you go on a rant.

As for the incident, technology doesn't give people an excuse to be reckless with what they are doing. The California DMV should have been more attentive instead of cutting corners.

If I don't get Spooky Scary Skeletons I'm gonna hurt so many people.  Like, at least two.

Hey, I had that in my head coming in here!

This can't be good for Facebook, especially after the Cambridge Analytica scandal they had. I wonder how people are reacting about this.

Manafort has agreed to a guilty plea for charges filed by Mueller's special counsel. He is being charged for conspiracy against the United States, and for conspiracy to obstruct justice.

Looks like cooperation is in the deal too.

So you're telling me Mueller failed? 8/18 charges <50% and none of them are collusion based. How sad

Thanks to one of the jurors appearing on Fox News (ironic, isn't it?), the 10 mistrials were 11-1 in favor of conviction.

In further news, The Washington Post: Trump’s economic adviser: ‘We’re taking a look’ at whether Google searches should be regulated.

I'm not surprised that they are considering this, considering the government's past efforts to regulate the Internet. Still, it makes me worry.

Sorry, but this isn't the American Educational System. Manafort was still convicted, and he still has a second trial in D.C. Try again.

Looks like the Tribune/Sinclair merger is void. This should be interesting, especially as it prevents Sinclair from expanding.

#7111945 Orwellian: What does it mean?

Posted by Nathanael D. Striker on 28 July 2018 - 12:05 PM

Today, I present a discussion on the term "Orwellian". Penned by Eric Arthur Blair (aka George Orwell), the term is commonly associated with the Oceanic Government found in his book 1984 (for those who haven't read 1984, I highly recommend it). The TED video above makes the claim that an Orwellian society does not imply an Authoritarian society; in fact, an Orwellian society can be a Democratic one. I find this claim very intriguing as I imagine most, myself included, typically imagine an Authorization society conducting the actions that take place in 1984 and assume that a Democratic society is incapable of it; however, the examples in this video highlight why that assumption is wrong. One of the main components of the term Orwellian- the manipulation of language- can be seen in our society. For example, politicians telling voters what they want to hear, but doing something else under the guise of representing their voters.

I pose these questions to you. What does the term Orwellian mean to you? As you have defined it, is it prevalent in our society? Why? How can we best combat it?

If any other discussion questions pop up, feel free to explore them.
